*Damian McCarthy, 2026 - horror*
Adam Scott is no stranger to scares (have you seen Krampus??) but now he's a writer visiting an Irish inn, which is a totally normal place and not creepy or haunted at all! From the writer and director of Oddity and Caveat, if that gives you any more clues about the vibe here. I'm already scared.
Sitting in H11 at the 7:15 Hoffman showing.
We'll meet up at Atlas about an hour before showtime - outside if the weather is nice! I'll post in the comments what I'm wearing so people can find me. People can go in whenever depending on your trailer appetite, and after the movie we'll congregate outside of the room.

Emmy, Grammy, and NAACP Image Award winner **Tiffany Haddish** has established herself as one of the most sought-after comedic actresses and performers worldwide. She is a multifaceted artist who, in addition to acting, sings and dances.
Haddish is perhaps best known for her breakout role as the scene-stealing âDinaâ in the smash hit comedy *Girls Trip.* She will soon reprise her role in the highly anticipated sequel *Girls Trip 2*, opposite Jada Pinkett Smith, Queen Latifah, and Regina Hall. This November, Haddish will be seen in Peacockâs unscripted series *Tiffany Haddish Goes Off*, which chronicles Haddishâs 4-week long girlsâ trip in Africa with her three best friends. She will also star in Lil Rel Howeryâs feature *Haunted Heist*, which premiered at the 2025 Fantastic Fest; Carlo Bernardâs upcoming action-thriller, *The Deputy*, alongside William H. Macy, Duke Nicholson, and Julia Fox; Adam Rifkinâs psychedelic stoner comedy, *Toad,* alongside James Franco, Christopher Meloni, and Craig Robinson; THE GIRL IN THE RIVER, alongside Maggie Grace, Ralph Macchio, and Devon Sawa; and crime-thriller MOTION.
Haddish is a *New York Times* bestselling author of the memoir *The Last Black Unicorn* and a childrenâs book author of *Layla, The Last Black Unicorn.* The companion audiobook to her memoir, which she narrated, was nominated for a 2019 Grammy Award for Spoken Word Album. Her latest book, a collection of essays entitled, *I Curse You with Joy*, was released in May 2024. Shortly after, HaddishâŻteamed up with legendary songwriter Diane Warren to release her empowering single, âWoman Up.â
Previously, Haddish executive produced VICE TVâs series *Black Comedy in America* and made a cameo in *Bad Boys: Ride or Die*, opposite Will Smith and Martin Lawrence, which made almost $400 million at the box office. She can also be seen starring as Detective Danner in Apple TV+âs critically acclaimed murder mystery series, *The Afterparty*; in Disneyâs *Haunted Mansion*; MGMâs *Landscape With Invisible Hand,* an adaption of MT Andersonâs futuristic sci-fi novel; and *Back on the Strip*. Prior to this, she starred in Lionsgateâs *The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent* opposite Nicholas Cage and Universalâs *Easter Sunday.* Haddish also voiced the role of âTucaâ in Adult Swimâs *Tuca & Bertie* and the role of Aisha in Huluâs *Solar Opposites*. Other recent credits include starring opposite Oscar Isaac in the critically acclaimed Paul Schrader film *The Card Counter; On the Count of Three,* alongside Jerrod Carmichael; and Netflixâs critically acclaimed *Bad Trip*, starring alongside Eric Andre and Lil Rel Howery. Haddishâs projects in development include *Down Undercover*, *Mystery Girl*, *Homecoming Queen* and *The Untitled Flo Jo Biopic.*
Her other film and television work includes *Here Today, Like A Boss, The Kitchen, Between Two Ferns: The Movie*, *The Spongebob Squarepants Movie: Sponge on the Run, The Secret Life of Pets 2, The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part, The Angry Birds Movie 2, Night School, Nobodyâs Fool, The Oath,* hosting both *Kids Say the Darndest Things* and *TBSâ Friday Night Vibes, Self-Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam CJ Walker, The Last O.G.* and *The Carmichael Show*. Haddish also served as host and executive producer of the Emmy-nominated Netflix stand-up comedy series *Tiffany Haddish Presents: They Ready.* The series of half-hour comedy specials featuring her friends and long-time comedic collaborators ran for two seasons.
Her Emmy-nominated and Grammy-winning comedy special, *Tiffany Haddish: Black Mitzvah*, debuted on Netflix in December 2019. Haddish became the second black woman ever to win a Grammy for âOutstanding Comedy Albumâ and the first since Whoopi Goldberg won in 1986. Her first stand-up special, *Tiffany Haddish: She Ready! From the Hood to Hollywood* was released on Showtime in August 2017. Just three months after the specialâs release, Haddish made history by becoming the first black female stand-up comedian to host *Saturday Night Live,* which earned her the 2018 Emmy Award for âOutstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series.â In June 2018, Haddish took the reins as the host of the *MTV Movie and TV Awards*, a role that earned her critical acclaim and significant ratings boost for MTV.
Haddishâs journey and life experiences have inspired her comedy and sense of humor both on and off the stage. She has been very candid about her experiences growing up in foster care in South Central Los Angeles. Her excessive talking and imaginary friends prompted her flustered social worker to steer her into stand-up comedy. She enrolled in the Laugh Factoryâs Comedy Camp, a place for at-risk and underprivileged children to transform negative energy into something positive. The experience was just the beginning of her comedy career. Haddish recently founded The She Ready Foundation to help and support foster kids in need. · Big Game · by Jalmari Helander @ Duncan Library
This isnât just an Oddball Adventure, itâs an absolutely berserk, preposterous, what-lunatic-thought-of-this production. When Air Force One is shot down on the way to a meeting of global leaders, the president, played by Samuel L. Jackson, lands in an escape pod in the Finnish wilderness. There he encounters a lone 13-year-old boy hunting deer with bow and arrow. The terrorists who destroyed the plane are approaching, and the boy and president must team up to evade them. The plot is Grand High Lunacy, with stunts that rival anything in the *Die Hard* or *Indiana Jones* franchises, but itâs engagingly directed and acted with weird fun surprises and plot twists galore. A good movie? No. A fascinating variation on so-bad-itâs-ridiculously-entertaining? Absolutely!

AGUARDIENTE - World Premiere Musical!
Join us for the world premiere of the musical ***Aguardiente: Where Magic Transcends Borders,*** commissioned by GALA and conceived by Helen Hayes multi-award winner Luis Salgado from Puerto Rico and Colombian artist Daniel Alejandro Gutiérrez.
Blending Afro-Caribbean rhythms such as bomba, currulao, and cumbia, and Gabriel GarcĂa MĂĄrquezâs magical realism, Aguardiente is a bold new musical about the messy, urgent act of making art in a world on fire. As a group of artists race to finish a new show, their rehearsal room becomes a battleground of ideas, ambition, and lived experienceâespecially for a composer whose undocumented status makes the dream of success anything but simple.
As the team wrestles with what story they should tell, the line between reality and imagination begins to blur, untilâlike two currents meeting in the same riverâthe artistsâ own struggles spill into the story they are creating: a vibrant tale set in a river town on the brink of environmental collapse, where two young lovers must decide whether to stay and fight for their homeland or leave in pursuit of a dream, making Aguardiente a theatrical journey about migration, memory, and the complicated act of transforming real lives into art.

1. **Bring something to drink, as singing is likely to make you thirsty.**
1. **We appreciate (but do not require) contributions to cover our room rental costs of $75 per session.**
1. **Please do RSVP. It helps us know how to set up the room and allows us to contact you if we have to cancel.**
*******
**FURTHER DETAILS, if you like:**
* **Our regular gatherings take place on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of the month. We meet from 2 to 5 p.m. with a break around 3:30. You can come for the whole time or just part of it. If you can arrive a little early to help set up or stay a little late to help put things back in order, that would be great. Occasionally we take pictures of our events. If you would rather not be photographed, just politely let the person with the camera know and step out of view. We'll be respectful of your wishes.**
**Whether you're new to SOJO or not so new, we look forward to singing and playing with you!**

Unknown Number: The High School Catfish
A very unusual choice for his group... Unknown Number: High School Catfish is an American [true crime](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/True_crime "True crime") documentary film directed by [Skye Borgman](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skye_Borgman "Skye Borgman") and released to [streaming](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Streaming_media "Streaming media") on [Netflix](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Netflix "Netflix") on August 29, 2025.
The documentary explores the events and investigation into an unknown person [cyberbully](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyberbullying "Cyberbullying") and [harassing](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harassment "Harassment") teenagers in [Beal City, Michigan](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beal_City,_Michigan "Beal City, Michigan") using an unknown number via insults and sexual claims. It also explores the increasingly great impact of the harassment on the community, the eventual reveal of the culprit, and the trial that followed.
IMPORTANT INFO: I strongly suggest not reading anything about it online before seeing it. It's best viewed with no previous knowledge. This documentary contains crude terminology and deals with cyberbullying, which may be a trigger for some folks.
PLEASE NOTE - WE ARE STARTING AT 6:30, WHICH IS THIRTY MINUTES EARLIER THAN USUAL.
Unfortunately, it is only available on Netflix. If you would like to attend but do not have Netflix, say so and maybe we can figure something out.
"Under the Oak Tree" by Suji Kim
Join us for lunch/tea at Asterisk Supper Club to discuss our May book "Under the Oak Tree" by Suji Kim
Lady Maximilian is the daughter of the powerful Duke Croyso, but she is rarely allowed outside her familyâs sprawling castle for fear that her stutter will tarnish their noble name. When she is forced to marry Sir Riftan, a lowborn knight caught in one of her fatherâs schemes, Maxi doesnât dare hope for happiness, let alone love. Her stumbling communication and his gruff manner sour their relationship before it can begin, and Riftan leaves without a word the morning after their vows are exchanged.
Now, three years after their disastrous wedding night, Riftan has returned as a war hero. To Maxiâs surprise, despite rumors that he was offered marriage to Princess Agnes, a beautiful and renowned sorceress, Riftan still wants Maxi for his wife. And when he comes to claim her, his longing becomes a desire that bewilders Maxi, even as she is overcome by the scorching heat that Riftanâs presence ignites within her. As she learns to navigate the intricacies of her new life, Maxi will find herself and her courage, and discover that she is anything but powerless.
Duty vs. Results: What Makes an Action Moral?
When judging morality, should we prioritize **intentions/duty** or **outcomes/results**? It introduces two influential philosophers as representatives of these approaches.
* **Immanuel Kant (deontology):** An action is moral when it is done from **duty** and follows rational, universal principles (the **categorical imperative**). Certain actsâlike lyingâare wrong regardless of the consequences; you canât do a wrong thing for a right reason.
* **John Stuart Mill (utilitarian consequentialism):** The morality of an action is determined by its **effects**, specifically how much **happiness/well-being** it produces. Mill argues that some pleasures are âhigherâ than others, and that good intentions donât redeem harmful outcomes.
## Discussion Questions
1. **The lying dilemma:** A murderer comes to your door and asks if your friend is hiding inside. Kant would say you must not lie.
2. **Can good intentions rescue a bad outcome?**
3. **The organ harvest problem:** A surgeon has five patients dying of organ failure and one healthy patient in for a checkup. Killing the one to harvest organs would save five lives, and the math works out for the utilitarian. Why does this feel so deeply wrong? Is that feeling a point in Kant's favor, or just a bias we should overcome?
4. **Do rules need exceptions?** Kant insists moral rules must be universal, with no exceptions. But most of us can imagine extreme scenarios where any rule seems like it should bend. Does the need for exceptions fatally undermine deontology, or is the strength of the system precisely that it refuses to bend?
5. **Who gets to calculate the consequences?** Utilitarianism asks us to maximize good outcomes, but we're notoriously bad at predicting consequences. If we can't reliably know the results of our actions, is it practical to base our entire moral system on outcomes? Does this uncertainty push us back toward rules and principles?
6. **Everyday morality:** Think about a real moral decision you've made recently, even a small one. Did you reason more like a Kantian (what's the right thing to do in principle?) or more like a utilitarian (what will produce the best result?)? Do most people naturally lean one way?
7. **Justice vs. the greater good:** A town can prevent a deadly plague by sacrificing one innocent person. The greater good is clearly served. But is it just? Can an action be morally right and deeply unjust at the same time?
8. **The big synthesis question:** Are these two systems actually opposed, or do they often arrive at the same answers by different paths? Is it possible that we need both: rules to guide us in the moment and consequences to evaluate systems and policies over time?
