Seneca Creek State Park, Maryland, 5-mile hike
Hiking along water in the morning should help keep us feeling cool! Seneca Creek State Park offers 50 miles of trails along 14 miles of Seneca Creek. We will do an out and back hike along the creek (swimming is not permitted; wading at your own discretion). We will keep a leisurely to moderate pace on fairly good footing. You might stay on into the afternoon to visit the Nature Center in the State Park Office or rent a boat at the Boat Center to paddle on Clopper Lake. On weekends, the State Park charges $3 per person for Maryland residents and $5 per person for non-residents. Carpooling is possible. Let me know if you need a ride. We will meet at 9:00 AM in the visitor center parking lot just off the main entrance to the park on Clopper Rd, route 117. We will drive together to our exact trailhead. A restroom is located in the visitor center, and others are located on the entrance road just before the toll station. Greetings Meetup friends of the outdoors and AMC -- here is an opportunity! Wilderness First Aid – National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) and the Appalachian Mountain Club Croydon Creek Nature Center, 852 Avery Road, Rockville, MD, June 13 and June 14 Required for AMC backpacking volunteer leaders, recommended or suggested for hiking volunteer leaders, AMC Members and friends. Even just outdoors people will benefit greatly. Prepare for the unexpected with this engaging, hands-on introduction to wilderness medicine, taught over two days. If you like to take short trips relatively close to medical resources, work at wilderness camps, enjoy weekend family outdoor activities, or recreate outdoors, this course is for you. This course is great for people of all experience levels. You’ll learn the Patient Assessment System, how to provide effective first aid treatments for injuries and illnesses common in the outdoors, and how to make appropriate evacuation decisions. You’ll learn both in the classroom and in outdoor settings regardless of weather, so come prepared for wet, muddy, cold or hot environments! This is a fast-track, two-day course that certifies you in Wilderness First Aid and CPR. **The minimum age to participate is 18.** **Schedule:** **Wilderness First Aid:** 8am–5pm both days (lunch break included) **CPR:** Evening of Day 1, up to 3 hours. Let's earn this afternoon's wine at The Barns at Hamilton Station with an easy paced bike ride along the W&OD Trail between Hamilton, Purcellville, and Clarks Gap. Since this will be Outdoor Vineyard Visits' first bike ride, we'll be keeping things casual and easy. Starting at the W&OD trail at Hamilton Station Rd, we'll begin with a 7.6 mile out-and-back to the end of the trail in Purcellville. For those that want more, we'll then head east to Clarks Gap for a total of twelve miles. If this pre-winery bike ride goes well, we'll look into doing more in the future including longer & more challenging rides. But today's ride is just for the fun of getting some easy miles in before joining the group up the road at The Barns. Do not park in local businesses' lots. You should know how your bike works and be comfortable riding on a trail or roads with other cyclists, walkers, runners, and maybe even horses. You must have a spare tube, tire levers, and either a pump or CO2 cartridges. I can help fix a flat but I can't bring a tube or air for every different type/size of tire. Check your bike BEFORE you leave your house. The trail head is not the place to adjust your brakes, derailleurs or air up your tires. eBikes are welcome but you must stick to the same pace as standard bikes. **+++++++++++++++++++++** **The Not So Fine Print:** **+++++++++++++++++++++** Helmets are required to participate on all Outdoor Winery Visit rides. All riders ride at their own risk and with the understanding that cycling is an inherently dangerous activity. When coming to the meetup you do so voluntarily and are ready and able to participate in the ride as described under the conditions of the day. Be on time for the "pre-ride" preparation. We will begin the ride at 11:00 am, no exceptions. In consideration of being allowed to participate in any way in the Outdoor Winery Visit's programs, related events and activities, I acknowledge, appreciate, and agree that: 1. A varied program of jazz, swing, and some klezmer for good measure. Expect lots of trad favorites and bring your dancing shoes! The Seth Kibel Quintet, featuring Flo Anito is a PRJC favorite. Seth charms our audiences with his deft combination of early jazz, swing, klezmer and a break-apart clarinet. Expect lots of trad favorites, a few rarities, as well witty, insightful, and partially-accurate historical commentary from Seth (not to mention a lot of laughs). You'll hear plenty of good music suitable for dancing, listening, drinking, and heckling, including quite a few from Seth's most recent album on Azalea City Recordings, "Clown With A Stick," released in May 2023. Seth Kibel is one of the Mid-Atlantic's premier woodwind specialists, working with some of the best bands in jazz, swing, and more. He’s the winner of 28 Washington Area Music Awards (Wammies), including "Best World Music Instrumentalist" and "Best Jazz Instrumentalist". Flo Anito is a talented singer in her own right. Combine these two with a great backline and a pleasurable afternoon of melody is in store. **Our Meetup is off to another hiking adventure! Mt Kilimanjaro, as the tallest mountain in Africa, is included in the 7 Summits of the world.** **It is a bucket-list item for all hard-core hikers and mountain lovers.** We did this trek with Meetup in the summer of 2024 and it was a true experience of a lifetime (see photos below) Let's get to some numbers. It is 5,895m/19,340ft BUT . . . our starting elevation for the trek is 3795m/12541ft As such elevation gain is 2100m/6799ft To compare Everest Base Camp trek, is about 2754m/9035ft elevation change. And Mt Whitney is about 1828m/6000ft elevation change. The key to being able to succeed in this endeavor lays in the route and the support system. We are taking the Lemosho Route via the Northern Circuit. The Northern Circuit route is the longest and newest of the seven established Kilimanjaro routes. It's one of the best routes because it has the best acclimatization profile. This results in one of the highest summit success rates. Add to that stunning views, and comparatively relaxed pace. It is also much less crowded than the other Kilimanjaro routes. As far as our support system: We will be accompanied by experienced guides, porters and cooks. They are certified, ensuring our safety and comfort. Porters will carry our gear. We will have a high ratio of guides to hikers. Our guides will go our pace and support each and everyone of us, regardless of fitness level and pace. In other words...you go your own speed and we all get there safe. More about our trek/trip. As with all our international trips, we picked the best season/time of year to go for weather and wildlife. Lemosho and Northern Circuit is a scenically spectacular and varied route. At the lower elevations it has an abundance of wildlife such as elephant, buffalo, eland and lion which come over to forage during dry season. **Each of our trips is personally crafted to offer the best places and best use of time.** *But I don't have the needed gear?!* You don't need much more than the standard trekker's equipment. We will provide you with a list of what is already included and what can be rented there. *Does this include food?* All meals on the trek potion are included and a cook travels with us! *What is lodging like?* We are sleeping in new and comfortable tents (carried during the day by porters) *I am new at this.* That's OK. We do plenty of prep Zooms before we depart. And in California we have a number of local outdoor day or weekend outings you can test out with us. *How dangerous is this?
