Stoney Writers Group
Stoney Writers Group
The goal of this group is simple: to support and encourage each other to write more (myself included). I love writing short stories, but too often life gets in the way and I find excuses not to do it. This monthly group gathers together on the last Tuesday of every month in the lovely *Third Space* cafe in Smithfield to share and get feedback on our work. We’ll each get the chance to share an extract from a piece we’ve written, read it aloud and get feedback (in a nice quiet creative space). Any form of writing is great – whether screenwriting, poetry, flash fiction or something else. We pride ourselves in promoting a really friendly, safe space to share freely, but if you’d prefer to listen for the first while, that’s cool too. If you fancy coming along: * RSVP to an event * Come along to a session * Get added to our WhatsApp group once you're there * Add a copy of your piece to our shared drive (so we can follow along as you read) * You'll get 4 mins to read your work, and 4 mins of feedback We have lots of regulars but always love welcoming new people, perspectives and writing, so do feel free to come along and I hope you enjoy it!
Sangha Night
Sangha Night
Sangha (or 'spiritual community') Night is a chance for those practicing meditation and Buddhism to come together. The evening usually consists of a period of meditation, a talk about Buddhism and a Puja after a short tea-break. **Practical details:** The night will start at 7pm sharp so arrive a little early to ensure a punctual start. **7 pm** – Meditation **7.25 pm** – Talk with Questions and Answers **8.10 pm** – Tea-Break **8.30 pm** – Puja **9.15 pm** – Finish This event is for: * Sangha members both new and long-standing. * Meditators or Buddhists with some experience who want to visit the Dublin Buddhist Centre for the first time. * Those totally new to meditation or Buddhism who want to jump in at the deep-end. Each month there will be an overarching theme, and each week will be a Buddhist Talk on some aspect of that theme. All our Sangha Nights are led by members of the Triratna Buddhist Order. No need to book in advance, just show up before one of the sessions. On a donation basis.
What's the Difference Between Knowledge and Wisdom?
What's the Difference Between Knowledge and Wisdom?
It's been said that knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit, but wisdom is knowing **not** to put it in a fruit salad. How do we reckon the difference between knowledge and wisdom? Is it possible to have one without the other, or does one depend upon the other? Does wisdom always arrive with age? Is more and more knowledge of any value in our post-information culture? Consider these and other questions at Socrates Cafe in Dun Laoghaire; buy a drink at the bar and add your voice, your point of view, to this important conversation.
Meditation Drop-in Night (suspended until further notice)
Meditation Drop-in Night (suspended until further notice)
***Unfortunately due to circumstances outside our control we are currently unable to run this class until further notice. People interested in coming along are welcome to join our Sangha Nights in the meantime: https://dublinbuddhistcentre.org/sangha-nights/*** Our meditation drop-in class is designed for those new to meditation or returning to practice. The 1 hour 15 minute session includes input on meditation and the Dharma, a led meditation, and time for questions and discussion. A welcoming space to learn, practice, and connect with others. **Practical details** The night will start at 7pm sharp so arrive a little early to ensure a punctual start. **7 pm** – Welcome & introduction to the meditation practice **7.15 pm** – Led meditation followed by space for questions **7.55 pm** – Short talk on aspect of meditation or Buddhism **8.15 pm** – Finish This event is for: * Those totally new to meditation or Buddhism * Meditators or Buddhists with some experience who want to visit the Dublin Buddhist Centre for the first time. All our Drop-in Meditation Nights are led by experienced members of the Triratna Buddhist Community. No need to book in advance, just show up a few minutes before we start at 7pm. On a donation basis. **Why meditate with others?** Meditation can help you pause, notice what’s happening in your mind and body, and build greater calm, clarity, and self-awareness - particularly important in a busy, demanding world. Meditation isn’t about emptying your mind or getting it “right,” but about paying attention to your own experience, just as it is. Learning and practicing meditation with other people can deepen this experience. Practicing together creates a sense of connection and shared understanding, reminding you that everyone’s experience is different and that there’s no single right way to meditate. Being part of a group can offer encouragement, structure, and a feeling of support, making the practice more sustainable and meaningful over time.
I Am Cuba (1964)
I Am Cuba (1964)
Directed by the renown Soviet film maker Mikhail Kalatozov, who’d won the Palme D’Or for *The Cranes Are Flying* in 1958, ***I Am Cuba*** (1964) is a window on to Cuba that looks like an art house film but feels like a documentary. The result is a fascinating snap shot in time of an island at a pivotal moment in its history.

📚 Silent Reading & Socialising 🍺
📚 Silent Reading & Socialising 🍺
## Details The title of the event is a paradox! Read in silence and then discuss with like-minded folks! :-) Since the weather is expected to be sunny, let's meet in the Stephen's green near Band Stand or James Joyce Statue facing MoLI, [https://maps.app.goo.gl/DX2AX2xYNTkU88Vq7?g_st=ic](https://maps.app.goo.gl/DX2AX2xYNTkU88Vq7?g_st=ic) at 7, do silent reading for an hour. Then head to Bartley's. If you're unable to find us, message me in the meetup. If you prefer indoors, you can ask Bartley's staff and read. We will join at 8:15 PM. 📝 **How does this work?** We will meet in the Bartley's Restaurant area from 7:00 PM to 8:15 PM for silent reading and followed up by discussion. **During silent reading, you're expected to remain silent and read.** Please bring your headphones and refrain from the discussion during the first one hour in the area. 👥 **Socialising** After an hour, at 8:15 PM, we'll discuss and socialize about the book you're reading. We highly encourage you to move between tables and strike up conversations with fellow book lovers. These discussions about literature and reading recommendations are often the highlight of the event! Feel free to join at any point during the event. The event is indoors, hopefully, we can continue the tradition of the silent reading in the winter! **📌 Helpful Tips and Notes** * Bring headphones to block out surrounding noise * I will post a comment on the event page when I arrive to indicate where we're seated, so everyone can find us * If you prefer to skip the silent reading, you can join directly at the bar at 8:15 PM ⚠️**Something Happened?** If something unpleasant happened to you, it may happen to others. It may be small but don't hesitate to reach out to me. Looking forward to meeting you all 😊

COUNT monthly event: Kitchen service at Van Buren Center's shelter
COUNT monthly event: Kitchen service at Van Buren Center's shelter
Come assist Van Buren Shelter (https://ymcacolumbus.org/locations/vanburen) staff in serving dinners and cleaning up on the 3rd Tuesday of each month. Dinner for the women is 5-6 pm and for the families is 6:15-7:15 pm. There is ample free parking available in the shelter's lot. The recommended area to park is in green in the image above. There will be a new entrance for the time being. We are asking all volunteers to enter through the Donation Dock door, the orange mark on the image above. This door is located between the Single Adults and Family Shelter. You will see 2 large garage doors with a large green trash compactor in the center. Please head to the closest garage door to the building wall, with a ramp leading up. There, you will see a door with a sign stating instructions on how to enter the building. Please ring the doorbell, and a staff member will come and escort you into the building. If a staff member takes longer than 5 minutes, please call the front desk at 614-689-2020. This is a new process for us, and we do not want to keep you waiting! We appreciate your patience as we navigate this temporary change. The shelter needs a volunteer count the day before the event so sign-up ends Monday at 4:50 PM. Afterwards some of us go to the Omnipresent Atheists Weekly Meetup in progress to have a bit to eat or drink (http://www.meetup.com/omnipresentatheists/). Volunteers must be 14 or older. Since we will be working around families, the YMCA does not permit volunteering by individuals with convictions for violent or sexual crimes. The YMCA reserves the right to run background checks on volunteers. For questions, comment on this page or contact: Andrew, awhit12@yahoo.com, (614)937-5802 (cell). Please let Andrew know if you volunteer anytime other than our COUNT events so that he can count your hours toward our service record.

Columbus Comedy Improv Meetup at Gresso's!
Whether you've never done improv before, or you've done it for so long you knew Del Close on a personal level, or anywhere in between, come join us! Swing by *Gresso's* for the **Columbus Improv Comedy Meetup** for some fun and games! The idea behind improv is to create entire scenes from scratch based on a suggestion from the audience. This can be done in game form, like *Whose Line Is It Anyway*, *ComedySportz*, or *Wild 'n Out*; it could also be done to tell stories, like *Middleditch and Schwartz*. Our meetup, which is central Ohio's longest running (and free!) weekly comedy event, brings the games (and occasionally different forms) for you to play in a safe, supportive, and compassionate environment. Not only is it a lot of fun, but you get to work on thinking faster on your feet, plus it's an excellent way to meet new people and make friendships that'll last a lifetime! Ask yourself if you want to join the **Columbus Improv Comedy Meetup**, and say "Yes, And" that you'll have fun!
