Sunday 08/03: INTL WOMENS DAY special – FREE milonga for all ladies, TDJ Eleanor + FABULOUS CLOSE EMBRACE VARIANTS! ✨ What a blast last Sunday! Thank you to the many of you who came to dance with us. 💛 This Sunday we will celebrate women from all over the world and for the occasion we decided to invite all ladies to dance, and for them the entry of the milonga is on us! (Gentlemen don’t worry we will do something special for you too). We will start with lessons for beginners (my first Calesita), followed by a second class looking at beautiful steps and variants in Close Embrace, for your greatest pleasure – and immediately usable set for the milonga. As usual the classes are at 2pm (Beginners – and improvers) and 3pm (Intermediates and up). Note the classes are not free today, just the social dancing. Flamenco Dance Classes for Beginners at Danceworks every Sunday! We will work on the placement of the body, the perception of the rhythm, clapping, footwork, movements of arms and head. Maika studied at Karen Taft Dance Academy and Flamenco Centre “Amor de Dios”, majoring in Spanish Dance at Conservatory of Dance in Madrid. In 2003, she was awarded a certificate in Teaching Methodology Applied to Spanish Dance and then focused her career on dance education. Maika has continued her professional training alongside teachers including Antonio Canales, Alfonso Losa, La Lupi, Rojas and Rodriguez. Maika co-founded the company Spanish Flamenco Tour, based in Miami (USA), a business dedicated to promoting flamenco and Spanish culture, to a local audience. Adding more strings to her bow, Maika embarked on a Master´s Degree in Leadership and Management of Cultural Projects at Institute of Dance “Alicia Alonso”, Rey Juan Carlos University. Her final master’s project was based on the promotion of Spanish dance, receiving a First-Class Degree. Maika’s classes are designed to extract every student’s natural ability to dance and show them how wonderful and fun, this art form is.

Picture the Grand Ball scenes like you’ve seen in period films such as “Pride and Prejudice”, where the dancers are lined up in long lines, across from each other. That’s English Country Dancing, the predecessor of contra dancing. Now, add moves like “swing your partner” and “do-si-do,” like you’ve seen in square dancing. Set it to fabulous, high energy, live music with fiddles, guitars, percussion and more, alá “Riverdance.” Finally, set the whole scene down in the middle of Woodstock, with a hip, groovy atmosphere, a bit of tie-dye, and hints of counter-culture attitude.
