Silver Tuesdays Nordic Walking in Brockwell Park
Silver Tuesdays Nordic Walking in Brockwell Park
Over the last nine years, Silverfit has been able to offer exercise to everyone over 50 in Brockwell Park. Together with Silverfit, I have done my best to keep the exercise fun for everyone, no matter if you are fit or not so fit, strong or not so strong, sporty or not so sporty. And, over all, I think we have done that pretty well! We have had some glorious years, and we made many, many friends over that time. Silverfit managed to keep it going through the good times and the hard Covid years, but unfortunately, the reality of the current economic climate is hitting Silverfit hard. Many councils and charities that have supported Silverfit over the years have stopped funding, and without funding, Silverfit just simply cannot keep going. Recently, they have had to take the hard decision to cut quite a number of their activities, and unfortunately, Nordic Walking in Brockwell park is one of the sessions that needs to be stopped. Yesterday afternoon was our last session for Silverfit. But…. I aim to keep your Tuesday walk going! So many of you love our Tuesday session, and it would just be too sad to stop completely. I would like to keep the Silver Tuesday session going under my own company, Fit and Happy Outdoors. Sadly, I cannot do this for free, as I do need to make a living. But in order to keep this session available for everyone, I plan to keep our Tuesday afternoon session at a highly reduced rate compared to my normal rates. New rates for our Silver Tuesday walks: 10 sessions for £45 (my normal rate is 10 sessions for £90). For those of you who struggle financially, I am happy to reduce this rate to £30, or even offer it for free. I can of course only do this if enough of you pay the normal rate, and I trust you will only ask for a reduction if you really need it. As I said, I do this for my living, but I don’t want money to be the reason you miss out on the benefits of Nordic Walking and spending time with our lovely group of friends. If you are already a member of Fit and Happy Outdoors and you pay monthly, then the Tuesday session is included in your fee. No extra payment is necessary (unless you’d like to sponsor someone who cannot pay) How does it work? 1) Please email me at Ailien at Fitandhappyoutdoors dot com, and let me know if you agree with me sending you an invoice for the full rate, or if you need a reduced rate. 2) I will then send you an invoice with my bank details on it. 3) Once I have received your payment in my bank account, I will hand you a 10-session card at the first session I see you 4) Every time you come walking on Tuesday, I will stamp your card 5) Once you have walked 10 times, I will send you a new invoice for the next 10. Payment: I really, really, prefer bank transfers. If you really do not do bank transfers, then you can pay me in cash. No cheques please (I really try to avoid having to go to the bank, it is just too much hassle). If you or a friend only comes once in a very blue moon, then they can pay £5 in cash for the session (only banknotes please. Help a girl out, I do enough weightlifting already 😊) Are you a walk leader? You are always welcome and do not have to pay me. I am grateful for your help! Do we still need to sign up? 1) Have your own poles? No need to sign up. But, if there is a weather warning, please check in with me as I might have to cancel and if I don’t know you are planning to come, I might not be able to tell you it’s cancelled 2) Happy to use the Meetup app, then sign up for your walk here? If you sign in, I will know you are planning to come, and it will be easy for me to let you know if I do need to cancel a session. 3) Need to borrow poles from me? Please text me ON THE DAY OF THE WALK to ask me to bring a set. My number is 078 078 3456 4. Just use normal text, no Whatsapp please, as I will probably miss your message. Any questions? Feel free to reply to this email, or text me on the number above.

The Annual London Hike
The Annual London Hike
**Date - Tuesday 16th June 2026** **Title - Docklands & The Isle Of Dogs** **Description - Please read carefully!** This year the London Hike will start at Canary Wharf and consist of a walk around the Docklands district and the Isle Of Dogs. We will be waterside for a large proportion of the walk, although it also includes some off road trails through the largest urban farm in Europe (where we will see sheep, pigs, geese and ducks), parkland, and the newly gentrified Millwall! Expect stunning modern architecture, some period buildings, superyachts, bridges, a tunnel, and numerous historic buildings. We will gather at the start point, (read the instructions carefully, at 12:00 / noon / midday) for a four hour trundle with stops. Lunch (BYO) will be our first stop in some delightful gardens, then afternoon tea in a lovely park, (with cafe facilities and a toilet), overlooking Greenwich. We will ‘rest a while’ with a cold beer, (or coffee), afterwards, in a pub with a large interior and a huge waterside garden area. As we will be a big group, and so we don’t lose anyone, please keep up and between the walk leader and the back marker, who will be in radio contact with each other. I will advise which route and train nearer the time which we will be using to get to the start point efficiently & comfortably from Brighton. Royal Society - Feeding the world without costing the earth
Royal Society - Feeding the world without costing the earth
Meet world-leading researchers from universities and science institutions across the UK at the Royal Society’s public events of cutting-edge science. Tonight's lecture is **"Environment Prize Lecture: Feeding the world without costing the earth"** as the **Environment Prize Lecture** **2026** delivered by **Professor Andrew Balmford FRS**. **This livestream event is free to join and requires prior registration with the Royal Society at the web address below.** **[https://royalsociety.org/science-events-and-lectures/2026/06/environment-prize-lecture/](https://royalsociety.org/science-events-and-lectures/2026/06/environment-prize-lecture/)** **SUMMARY** The Environment Medal and Lecture 2025 is awarded to **Professor Andrew Balmford FRS** for groundbreaking contributions to conservation science, having built transformative partnerships and redefining the landscape of conservation education. Food production does more damage to wild species than any other sector of human activity, yet how best to limit its growing impact is greatly contested. Looking first at recent progress in encouraging less damaging diets and trying to cut food loss and waste, Professor Balmford will conclude that both are essential but far from sufficient. On the production side, field studies from five continents quantifying the impacts of different farming systems on almost 2000 individually-assessed species reveals, perhaps surprisingly, that land-sparing – adopting high-yield farming to in order make space nearby for natural habitats – consistently outperforms approaches focused on retaining wildlife within farms. Sparing also offers considerable potential for mitigating climate change. But delivering land sparing raises important challenges—in particular, identifying and promoting sustainable higher-yielding farm methods that are less environmentally harmful than current industrial agriculture, and devising mechanisms which ensure yield gains also deliver habitat conservation. These findings challenge current conservation orthodoxy but suggest that without novel collaborations between conservation and the agriculture sector we will not succeed in bending the curve of biodiversity loss. **SPEAKER** **Andrew Balmford** is Professor of Conservation Science in the Department of Zoology, University of Cambridge, where his research focuses on how to reconcile biodiversity conservation with meeting human food needs and other land-demanding activities, on the effectiveness of conservation actions, and on the costs and benefits of retaining intact ecosystems. He collaborates closely with conservation practitioners and with colleagues in other disciplines including economics, agriculture and psychology. Andrew helped establish the Student Conference on Conservation Science, the Cambridge Conservation Forum, Earth Optimism and the Cambridge Centre for Carbon Credits. In his book ‘Wild Hope’ - which has since inspired a TV series - he argues that cautious, evidence-based optimism is vital in tackling environmental challenges. Andrew was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society in 2011. ## Attending the event * The event is free to join, please register via [register via Eventbrite](https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/royal-society-milner-award-lecture-2025-professor-iryna-gurevych-tickets-1341789300919?aff=oddtdtcreator) * Live subtitles will be available in-person and virtually ### Attending online * The lecture can be attended in person at the Royal Society * **Please note** that as this is a free event, we anticipate that not everyone who reserves tickets will use them and we therefore make more tickets available than there are seats. NEW HIKE The 3 castles walk, a splash of green in the English countryside.
NEW HIKE The 3 castles walk, a splash of green in the English countryside.
Hey, hey, hey! Spring is here and what do we do in the Spring? We walk in the great British countryside that will be filled with colours, poesy and scents. A romantic glow will surround us along the path through various historical buildings and glorious forests. The hike will take you through magical woodlands and countryside and no less than 3 castles! What else can we do but walk through haunted woods and castle grounds. You will hike from Leigh to Hever, through the medieval village of Penshurst, some pretty woodlands, you will walk past Penshurts castle and Chiddinstone castle and will end the trip with a visit of the world famous Hever Castle, former home of Anne Boleyn, if you fancy who still haunt the royal residence... creepy... The castle dates back to the 14th century, and was once the childhood home of Anne Boleyn, second wife of Henry VIII and Mother of Elizabeth I. It formed the unlikely backdrop to a sequence of tumultuous events that changed the course of Britain’s history, monarchy and religion. Yes, Hever Castle is widely reported as being haunted, most notably by the ghost of Anne Boleyn, who is said to walk the grounds, particularly on Christmas Eve, over the bridge on the river Eden, and manifest in the castle. However, there are also reports of other entities, such as a menacing figure in the bedrooms, a mischievous poltergeist, and other unexplained phenomena like feelings of a presence and strange odors. The castle is a wonder of architecture and history with its own little medieval village. You will be given the opportunity to visit the castle and its gardens (entry is £25), or to be taken back to the station if you prefer. This is a jewel not to be missed! Attention, if you decide to visit, you will make your own way back to the station. Afterwards, as always, we can pop into a pub or a restaurant for a cheeky drink or a nice meal or simply head back to good old London. INFORMATION: MEETING POINT: London Victoria rail station at 08:40am(The station might change so please check your inbox for more info and the link to the Whatsapp group.) Women’s Summer Social 🥳
Women’s Summer Social 🥳
**SUMMER SOCIAL 🥳** **Hi! If you don’t already know me, I run a local women’s walking group called Walk With Virginia. We usually do 1–2 walks a month around West London — think riverside walks, markets, coffee stops, pub socials and lots of lovely conversation along the way 😊** **I’ve decided to put together a Summer Social this time… so NO walk involved 😂🥂** **It’s basically a chance for current walkers and anyone curious about joining us to come along, have a drink, relax and get to know the community in a really easy, welcoming environment.** **The group is super friendly and inclusive and the age range is generally around 30–65. Some ladies come alone, some come with friends, and lots of people have met through the group and now genuinely socialise outside of the walks too ❤️** **It’s very much about:** **✨ good energy** **✨ connection** **✨ wellness** **✨ friendship** **✨ getting out more** **✨ meeting like-minded women** **So the details are -** **📍 The Weir, Brentford** **📅 Wednesday 17th June** **⏰ 6PM–10PM** **💷 £12 includes a glass of wine, beer, cocktail or soft drink (must be redeemed by 7PM)** **👯 Ladies only** **⚠️ Limited spaces** **The Weir has a gorgeous waterside garden so it should be such a lovely summer evening.** **Pics of previous walks attached so you can see the myself and the walkers!** **Hope to see you! Grab your spot here Cheers 🥂** **Follow me on Eventbrite to find out all future walks and events!** **https://www.eventbrite.com/o/60588117643?aff=ebdsshios** **Also I’m over on IG www.instagram.com/virginia_offiah 🙏🙌**

This walk is suitable for the average experienced hill walker. Expect some hills. Do not attend this walk if you do not fit that description or if you have a medical condition (especially heart and/or lung conditions) that may impact upon your capability of completing the walk. These walks are city walks and countryside walks where all the usual risks of injury during such walks apply resulting from interactions with road traffic, joggers, cyclists, e-scooters,other members of the public, animals (farm, domestic and wild), plants (allergic reactions), uneven surfaces, including portruding tree roots and potholes and there may be low overhanging branches. In these walks we cross busy roads, use towpaths alongside water, bridlepaths, country lanes and sometimes ill defined paths and tracks through woodland, bush and countryside. Some tracks may be muddy and slippery, and conditions may be wet and icy. The walk leader is not and does not purport to be a professional guide, or a medical professional, but is instead a like minded individual who also enjoys hill walking and who is familiar with the intended route. Do not attend this walk unless you accept and consent to the above risks. Walk & Talk About Life's Big Questions
Walk & Talk About Life's Big Questions
[The Board Walks](http://www.theboardwalks.com/) are for curious people who love deep conversations. If that sounds like you, **bring a thoughtful topic** and join us for a 5-mile walk (10,000+ steps!). **HOW IT WORKS** **Step 1: Bring a topic** Before you arrive, think of **one** topic you want to explore. A question. A thought that's been on your mind. An obsession you want to geek out on. This is your ticket to the event. **Step 2: Circle up & share** We gather in a circle. Your friendly walk host gives a speech to set the tone. Everyone shares: your name, what you're grateful for, and your topic. That's it. 60 seconds. **Step 3: Walk, talk & float** We walk 5 miles. You naturally drift into conversation with 2-3 people at a time, pulled by topics that spark your curiosity. When you're ready to move on, just say: "I'm going to float!" **Step 4: Feel more alive** Two hours flies by. You're back where you started — but you feel different. More alive. More energized. More connected to yourself and others. That's why regulars join 20+ times. *For more details, read our [Orientation Guide.](https://www.theboardwalks.com/orientation)* **HOW TO BRING A GREAT TOPIC** A great topic = something you're genuinely curious about. Recent topics include: * "What are you passionate about right now?" * "What makes a good friend?" * "What's a belief you used to hold that you've completely changed?" * "How do you want to be remembered?" * "What would you do if money wasn't a factor?" Think of your topic like the dish you're bringing to our conversational potluck. If everyone brings an A+ dish (i.e. energizing, uplifting, expansive), we'll all walk away feeling lighter and brighter. **WHAT TO EXPECT** This isn't a fitness event with casual chitchat. It's a walking think tank where we explore life's big questions together, beyond small talk. *If you're looking for light banter or a standard networking event, this probably isn't the right fit.* But if you crave depth, genuine connection, and conversations that make you feel alive? You'll love it here. **FAQ** * Wear casual athletic attire and sneakers. It's a long walk! * We have multiple first-timers at each event. We work hard to create a welcoming, inclusive, clique-free space. * We welcome people of **all** ages, backgrounds, and industries who align with the [intention](https://www.theboardwalks.com/ground-rules) of this space. * Rain or shine, we've been out here nearly every week since July 2022. If the event is cancelled, we'll let you know. * Dogs, babies in strollers, parents, and friends are welcome — please text/email them the event link so they can RSVP and prepare a topic! **LOGISTICS** * If you'll arrive over 10 minutes late, we suggest skipping the event. It's hard to find us once we start walking, and your host can't answer messages during the event. * This walk is designed for everyone to *move together at the same steady pace* (about 20 min/mile). This format works best when the whole group moves in unison. If you have mobility limitations, we kindly encourage you to find an event better suited to your needs. * Read our [Orientation Guide](https://www.theboardwalks.com/orientation) for full details. * If you enjoy the event, send **[this](http://www.theboardwalks.com/)** to a friend or sign up for our **[newsletter](https://theboardwalks.beehiiv.com/)**. We're in multiple cities with more on the way. 🤠👋 **IF YOU WANT TO GO DEEPER...** [The Board](https://stan.store/ellebeecher/p/the-board) is the next step: a high-trust collective for renaissance people devoted to creating, connecting, and building lives that light us up. * This is a global HQ for people who crave big talk, deep connection, and dream collaborations with people across industries. If the walks feel like a spark... The Board is the fire. Apply [here](https://stan.store/ellebeecher/p/the-board).
