Monopoly Board 1 - South and East (Linear, 9 miles)
Due to popular demand (well 1 person!) we are repeating the Monopoly Board walks, but in one day. This is the morning walk starting at Waterloo Station and finishing at Kings Cross. For those keen to do the second walk, it is listed separately and will obviously start in the afternoon at Kings Cross.
For those who don’t know – Monopoly is a board game based around street and station names of London.
We will meet at 10AM under the clock at Waterloo station. Our first destination is Lambeth North – which apparently is “GO” on the Monopoly board. There is then a relatively long walk to the Old Kent Road before we head back into town to cross the iconic Tower Bridge. We stop for a quick break by some old remains of the original London Wall. We then tick off Vine Street, Fenchurch Street station and Whitechapel before we head up through Brick Lane to Spitalfields Market. Following this, we go across to Liverpool Street Station and Fleet Street before heading up to Angel and Pentonville Road. Finally, we head over to our final stop at Kings Cross Station. We will have only covered roughly a 3rd of the locations – but this is because a lot of them are clustered over in West London – we pick these up in the afternoon!
We will distribute a crib sheet before as well so everybody can tick off as we progress across the day. We will in effect be playing Monopoly Bingo!
This is a **no dog walk.**
Please note that **there is a £2 payment required for non-Ramblers members** to help cover our Meetup costs. **Please help the walk leader by bringing the exact change.**
Members of the Ramblers Association are welcome on any of our walks, but we would still encourage you to RSVP on Meetup. This will give our volunteer walk leaders an idea of how many are attending, and also to keep the numbers manageable. If, on the day of the walk, you are still on the waiting list and a Ramblers member, you can attend just let the walk leader know you are coming by adding a comment 'Coming as a Rambler'. You will find the start location via our website Our Walks ([westkentwalkinggroup.org.uk](http://westkentwalkinggroup.org.uk/)).
Walk & Talk About Life's Big Questions
If you crave depth and genuine connection, join a walking think tank of curious people, topics spark meaningful conversations, and you leave inspired.
## Details
[The Board Walks](http://www.theboardwalks.com/) are for curious people who love deep conversations.
If that sounds like you, **bring a thoughtful topic** and join us for a 5-mile walk (10,000+ steps!).
**HOW IT WORKS**
**Step 1: Bring a topic**
Before you arrive, think of **one** topic you want to explore. A question. A thought that's been on your mind. An obsession you want to geek out on. This is your ticket to the event.
**Step 2: Circle up & share**
We gather in a circle. Your friendly walk host gives a speech to set the tone. Everyone shares: your name, what you're grateful for, and your topic. That's it. 60 seconds.
**Step 3: Walk, talk & float**
We walk 5 miles. You naturally drift into conversation with 2-3 people at a time, pulled by topics that spark your curiosity. When you're ready to move on, just say: "I'm going to float!"
**Step 4: Feel more alive**
Two hours flies by. You're back where you started — but you feel different. More alive. More energized. More connected to yourself and others. That's why regulars join 20+ times.
*For more details, read our [Orientation Guide.](https://www.theboardwalks.com/orientation)*
**HOW TO BRING A GREAT TOPIC**
A great topic = something you're genuinely curious about.
Recent topics include:
* "What are you passionate about right now?"
* "What makes a good friend?"
* "What's a belief you used to hold that you've completely changed?"
* "How do you want to be remembered?"
* "What would you do if money wasn't a factor?"
Think of your topic like the dish you're bringing to our conversational potluck. If everyone brings an A+ dish (i.e. energizing, uplifting, expansive), we'll all walk away feeling lighter and brighter.
**WHAT TO EXPECT**
This isn't a fitness event with casual chitchat. It's a walking think tank where we explore life's big questions together, beyond small talk. *If you're looking for light banter or a standard networking event, this probably isn't the right fit.*
But if you crave depth, genuine connection, and conversations that make you feel alive? You'll love it here.
**FAQ**
* Wear casual athletic attire and sneakers. It's a long walk!
* We have multiple first-timers at each event. We work hard to create a welcoming, inclusive, clique-free space.
* We welcome people of **all** ages, backgrounds, and industries who align with the [intention](https://www.theboardwalks.com/ground-rules) of this space.
* Rain or shine, we've been out here nearly every week since July 2022. If the event is cancelled, we'll let you know.
* Dogs, babies in strollers, parents, and friends are welcome — please text/email them the event link so they can RSVP and prepare a topic!
**LOGISTICS**
* If you'll arrive over 10 minutes late, we suggest skipping the event. It's hard to find us once we start walking, and your host can't answer messages during the event.
* This walk is designed for everyone to *move together at the same steady pace* (about 20 min/mile). This format works best when the whole group moves in unison. If you have mobility limitations, we kindly encourage you to find an event better suited to your needs.
* Read our [Orientation Guide](https://www.theboardwalks.com/orientation) for full details.
* If you enjoy the event, send **[this](http://www.theboardwalks.com/)** to a friend or sign up for our **[newsletter](https://theboardwalks.beehiiv.com/)**. We're in multiple cities with more on the way. 🤠👋

LONDON: The Oak Trail, Theydon Bois
**LONDON: The Oak Trail, Theydon Bois**
Join Hannah, Rob and London Wildish Club as we head out along the Oak Trail in Theydon Bois.
Yes, it’s technically another Wildish walk in Epping Forest. But Epping is enormous, ancient, probably magic - and we’re still not finished with it.
We’ll start and finish at Theydon Bois Station, quickly stepping straight from the Central Line into ancient woodland. The route weaves through old oaks, open clearings, quiet lanes and a few unexpectedly storybook corners (the kind that make you forget you’re still inside the M25). With a bit of luck, we’ll notice the earliest stirrings of spring.
This is a slightly longer wander at 10.2 km, but very manageable, with just under 100 m of gentle ascent - [see route here](https://www.outdooractive.com/en/route/hiking-trail/east-england/oak-trail-theydon-bois/335211002/?share=%7E33xtwtco%244osscqw7).
Expect mud in places, crisp air, friendly people and pauses for seasonal noticing along the way.
Public toilets are available at Theydon Bois Station before and after the walk, but there are no facilities on route (though the Forest Gate pub in Bell Common may help out). Much of the walk is through woodland, so plan accordingly.
Any questions, just give us a shout.
**What to Bring**
• Sturdy footwear (mud-friendly trainers or walking boots recommended)
• Warm layers + waterproof jacket
• Water + snacks/lunch
• Your best winter woodland facts
• A dog friend, if you have one
**Route Info**
• Loop route, starting and finishing at Theydon Bois Station
• Distance: 10.2 km
• Duration: approx. 2 hrs 35 mins (steady pace)
• Ascent: 99 m
• Terrain: woodland paths, gently undulating, likely muddy in places
• We’ll walk rain or shine — come prepared 🌦️

Over the centuries it has attracted many famous residents, including **Lewis Carroll, Alan Turing, Terry Jones, Yvonne Arnaud** and supermodel **Jodie Kidd**. The artist **William Turner** painted the nearby ruins of St Catherine’s Chapel in 1807–08, works that now hang in the Tate Gallery.
We start by following the **River Wey**, a peaceful canal lined with boathouses and willow trees, leading us to the evocative ruins of **St Catherine’s Chapel**, a 14th-century site perched above the river. From here, our trail rises into the **Bluebell Woods** before joining the ancient **North Downs Way**, a ridge path that rewards us with sweeping views across Surrey and, on a clear day, as far as the sea.
At the top of the ridge we reach the remote and atmospheric **St Martha’s Church**, built in the 12th century and still standing alone on the hilltop. The views here are among the finest in the region, stretching across seven counties and down to the distant South Downs.
From the ridge, we descend towards **Chilworth**, once home to an extensive **gunpowder factory** built by the East India Company in 1626. Though production ended in 1920, the enchanting **27-acre site** is now a mix of woodland and evocative ruins, including relics, tramways and industrial buildings from its nearly 400-year history. We finish our hike back in Guildford, passing the town’s Norman castle before returning to London.

Chiltern Way Section 8 - Ewelme to Stokenchurch
**Start time**: 10:00 **Estimated finish**: 17:00
**Difficulty**: Moderate/Strenuous **Ascent**: 650m / 2133ft
**Distance**: 12.5m / 20.1km
**Led by** Beth (07956242703)
Are you ready to explore the breathtaking beauty of the Chilterns? Join us as we walk the Chiltern Way in stages, discovering picturesque landscapes, charming villages, and hidden gems along the way. This long-distance trail, covering approximately 177 miles, offers a perfect mix of rolling hills, wooded paths, and open fields. From historical landmarks to cosy pubs, each stage of the Chiltern Way promises new discoveries and delightful experiences.
***
**Important:** **as public transport is tricky we will instead meet at the end point in Stokenchurch (car park by the old Kings Arm Hotel, see map pin!) and then organise ourselves into as few cars as possible and drive to the start point at Ewelme Recreation Ground for 10.30. At the end, we'll drive the drivers back to their cars. You can meet us in Ewelme but we cannot guarantee enough spots in cars to get back, though we will of course do our best.**
***
A rewarding point-to-point walk through the heart of the Chilterns, linking the historic village of Ewelme with the green at Stokenchurch. At 12.5 miles with around 650 metres of ascent, this is a properly hilly day, with lots of ups and downs rather than long sustained climbs.
The route winds through classic Chiltern woodland and open fields, offering plenty of variety and some lovely views. Underfoot conditions can be muddy, particularly if there has been lots of rain just before, so come prepared to get muddy! Boots are preferred if possible and please make sure you bring lots of warm layers and a waterproof.
We’ll stop for lunch along the route, so please bring a packed lunch and water for the day. There are no toilets en-route. The walk finishes mid to late afternoon on the green at Stokenchurch, and if there's time on the day we'll stop at the pub in Ibstone Common.
Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a lead under close control and are the responsibility of the owner.

**Become a full member**: CYW are part of the Ramblers and you may try up to three walks free. When you decide to continue walking with us, please see details at '***Become a member***' to join the Ramblers.

Adventures in Ecological Horticulture
with Rebecca McMackin
Wednesday, March 18
1:00pm - 2:30pm
Gone are the days when a garden could be ornamental alone. We now recognize the impact that our land care practices have on the ecosystems around us, and can see the importance of encouraging biodiversity. Thankfully, we do not need to sacrifice beauty when we invite butterflies and songbirds into our gardens.
Rebecca McMackin has cultivated gorgeous landscapes in the toughest environments possible: urban parks, school playgrounds, and the sidewalks of New York City. She will take lessons from her work at Brooklyn Bridge Park, the Brooklyn Museum, and decades of research to share how those of us who are fortunate enough to care for land, can do it beautifully and ecologically.
Rebecca McMackin is an ecologically obsessed horticulturist and garden designer. She writes, lectures, and teaches on ecological landscape management and pollination ecology, as well as designs the rare public garden.
She is currently Lead Horticulturist for the American Horticultural Society, an Associate with the Harvard Divinity School’s Thinking with Plants and Fungi Initiative, and Consulting Arboretum Curator for Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx, NY.
Rebecca spent a decade as Director of Horticulture of Brooklyn Bridge Park, where she managed 85 acres of diverse parkland organically. Their research into cultivating urban biodiversity and ethical management strategies has influenced thousands of people and entire urban parks systems to adopt similar approaches.
She has been published by and featured in the New York Times, Gardens Illustrated, on NPR and PBS. Her garden for the Brooklyn Museum recently won the PPA’s Award of Excellence and her TED Talk has been viewed over a million times. She holds M.Sc. from Columbia University and University of Victoria in landscape design and biology and recently completed the Loeb Fellowship at the
Harvard Graduate School of Design.
This program is presented in partnership with Rooted in Bexley and generously funded by the Bexley Community Foundation and Bexley Community Author Series Fund.
Walk & Talk About Life's Big Questions
**IF YOU WANT TO GO DEEPER...**
[The Board](https://stan.store/ellebeecher/p/the-board) is the next step: a high-trust collective for renaissance people devoted to creating, connecting, and building lives that light us up.
* This is a global HQ for people who crave big talk, deep connection, and dream collaborations with people across industries. If the walks feel like a spark... The Board is the fire. Apply [here](https://stan.store/ellebeecher/p/the-board).

David Marsolo is a long time Wild Ones member. He has been maintaining artificial bogs at his suburban Westerville home for about 20 years. He will describe how to install a bog and fill it with many interesting native plants including pollinator and host plants
