Off-the-Beaten-Track Hike 🌳🚶♀️🚶♂️
Join us for an 8km “off the beaten track” hike through a quiet pocket of greenery where the city fades into soft, natural calm. The route is easy to follow and sprinkled with a few muddy patches, so good shoes and a bit of adventure spirit will help. Do come prepared for mosquitoes, as this area is more natural than manicured. This walk is best for participants who are relatively healthy, comfortable with longer distances and have no fitness concerns 💪. If you’re ready for fresh air and a trail that feels refreshingly different from the usual paths, come set out on this quiet adventure with us. 🌿✨

(FULLY BOOKED!) SPECTACULAR JAPAN NORTHERN ALPS HIKE + ALPINE ROUTE TRAIL!
**FULLY BOOKED!**
**" AWESOME. PICTURESQUE. INSPIRING. OVER-WHELMING!"**
*"Trekking beside the riverbanks in Japan Alpine region, I was overwhelmed by the sheer beauty and awe-inspiring scene that stood before me. The grandeur and splendour of these majestic mountains reflected on crystal-clear lakes and rivers is truly awe-inspiring! To me, no words will ever be able to truly describe the serenity and natural beauty of this place. Having experienced the peace and tranquility of paradise, I just had to share this place with you .. my very own TLC members."*
David Lim - TLC Founder / Organizer
\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*\*
**TRIP HIGHLIGHTS:**
**KAMIKOCHI**
Known to the locals as Japan's most spectacular Alpine mountain sceneries, this region is only open from late April until early Oct and shuts down during winter. The scenic trekking trails on the lower region is roughly 15 km along a plateau beside crystal-clear waters on the Azusa River Valley, about 1500 meters above sea level.
It is surrounded by breath-taking snow-capped mountains, including the *Nishihotakadake (2909 m), Okuhotakadake (3190 m), Maehotakadake (3090 m)* peaks and the active volcano *Yakedake (2455 m)* all offering spectacular views and challenges to mountain hikers.
As part of the **Chubu Sangaku National Park**, this region has only been moderately developed with a few lodges and bridges preserving it's natural beauty. All private transport are banned here, and access to this alpine trail is quite a daunting challenge as it only possible by local public bus (http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2015.html) (need to change 3 different buses) or by approved taxi (very costly). The serenity and beauty that awaits you however far outweighs the effort taken to get there.
**TAKAYAMA** \- Ancient Old World Charm
Located in the heart of the Japanese Alps, **TAKAYAMA** is best known for its inhabitants' expertise in carpentry. It is believed carpenters from Takayama worked on the Imperial Palace in Kyoto and on many of the temples in Kyoto and Nara. The town and its culture, as they exist today, took shape at the end of the 16th century, when the Kanamori clan built Takayama Castle. About a hundred years later the city came under the rule of the Tokugawa Shogunate (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tokugawa_shogunate). However, the high altitude and separation from other areas of Japan kept the area fairly isolated, allowing Takayama to develop and preserve its own charm and culture over a 300-year period. A hike or cycling around the village exploring its charms will bring you back to the Samurai era.
**SHIRAKAWA-GO**
This is a mountain village located at the highest peak on **Mount Haku** in the Ryōhaku Mountains, where it borders Ishikawa prefecture. Declared a UNESCO world heritage site in 1995, they are famous for their traditional gassho-zukuri farmhouses, some of which are more than 250 years old.
**Gassho-zukuri** means "constructed like hands in prayer", as the farmhouses' steep thatched roofs resemble the hands of Buddhist monks pressed together in prayer. The architectural style developed over many generations and is designed to withstand the large amounts of heavy snow that falls in the region during winter. The roofs, made without nails, provided a large attic space used for cultivating silkworms.
**KUROBE-ALPINE SCENIC ROUTE** with its amazing **20m Snow-Wall.**
Experience hiking along 20 Metre high snow-wall and stunning vistas and unique landscapes as you travel over, above, and even under the majestic Mt. Tateyama. Stop off to enjoy a stroll through flower filled meadows or steaming volcanic valleys. The Tateyama Kurobe Alpine (pronounced “Alpen”) Route is known as the **“Roof of Japan”**. The route passes through the dynamic scenery of **Mt. Tateyama** in the Japan Alps.
**KUROBE DAM**
It is traversed using a variety of vehicles eg. Ropeway, Cable-car, Trolley Bus etc. with an elevation change of 2400 meters from Toyama Prefecture to Nagano Prefecture. Tateyama is home to many rare species of plant. It takes many years for these plants to grow and bloom.
**TOYAMA**
Nestled between the dramatic peaks of the Japanese Alps and the shimmering waters of Toyama Bay, Toyama is a breathtaking blend of nature, culture and culinary delight. Famous for it's picturesque castle, the spectacular Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route and its snow walls, this coastal gem also tempts with some of Japan’s freshest seafood. Stroll along the tranquil Kansui Park at sunset and feel the calm. Toyama is serene, authentic and beautifully untouched—an unforgettable escape from Japan’s usual tourist trail.
**"ON-SEN"** \- Soak in Japanese Hot Springs
Hot springs have a very long history in Japan, and they are an intimate part of Japanese culture. There are over 3,000 “onsen” – or hot springs – in Japan, many which can be found at the ryokans listed at Japanese Guest Houses. At many ryokans, there will be large indoor onsen for both men and women. Or they may often have several pools with wall-length windows where you can look out over a garden, river, or another natural setting. The interior may be lined with natural rocks and decorated with various kinds of tropical plants.
**TOKYO/ NAGANO/ TOYAMA/ TAKAYAMA STREET-FOOD ADVENTURES!**
Tokyo, Japan’s bustling capital, mixes the ultra modern and the traditional, from neon-lit skyscrapers and anime shops to cherry trees and temples. The city is famed for its nightlife in **Shinjuku**, vibrant food scene, and its **Shibuya** and **Harajuku** districts are the heart of its trendy teen fashion scene. Here ... anything goes and as adventurers, we're ready to check it out! :)
\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-
Yes, the **Japan Northern Alps** is a region of awesome beauty, charm, history and great food! With award-winning UNESCO World Heritage sites, this vast area is still largely unexplored by tourists, especially it's spectacular alpine scenery.
Having led several groups there to this breathtaking region, I invite you to join me in this awesome experience - trekking through snow-capped mountains, hiking along beautiful streams and rivers, staying in a capsule hotel, soaking in a mineral rich onsen, walking through 20 metre snow-walls, trying out Japanese delicacies etc and more.
This special self-designed adventure that brings you to explore the Northern Alp's history and beauty spiced with different experiences is not your usual tour package offered by normal tour agencies. We will be on an adventure taking various modes of transport eg. the bullet train, cable car, trolley bus, ropeway, tram etc to access some of the remote parts of the Northern Alps inaccessible to private vehicles. You will have a chance to stay in different types of accommodation eg. at a capsule hotel, ryokan, spa hotels, samurai villages etc. subject to availability.
A certain level of basic fitness eg. ability to hike at least 15 km; having a spirit of adventure to explore new places and willingness to look after and care for each other as a Team is a must.
If you think you fit the above description, please register your interest by RSVPing and making the deposit transfer asap. A pre-trip briefing on how and what you need to prepare for this once in a lifetime adventure will be conducted once the group is formed.

[Hiking Series] M'sia - Ophir (1,276m) via Asahan: Challenging full day hike!
**\*If interested, please whatsapp** [wa.me/+6588842635](wa.me/+6588842635) **or +65 8884 2635! We have limited permits and must be applied in advance. Sign-ups *are only confirmed after contacting us and joining the WA group! \****
Gunung Ledang, or commonly known as Mount Ophir (1,276m) is the highest mountain in Johor and almost the most climbed mountain there.
This is a good step-up hike for those who are looking to progress to tougher hikes after Gunung Datuk or are training or preparing for Kinabalu/Nepal etc.
There are 2 main trails for Mount Ophir, the more popular and accessible "Sagil", and the "Asahan Trail". For this trip, we are looking to do the Asahan Trail, which is harder than the Sagil hike. There is also a cut-off timing to the summit/CP which we'll enforce more strictly compared to Sagil.
**Who is this for?**
=> People who wish to challenge themselves
=> Have done Ophir before but never done the Asahan Trail
=> Wish to do a tough full day hike
It serves as a good training or progressive hike for those who wish to do more hiking. Most do it as training for other treks, like Kinabalu, or Nepal. Do note that we are looking to descend by around 6pm, so we expect some level of fitness or hiking experience for the group!
***How tough is it/How fit do I have to be?***
It is harder and longer than the Sagil hike. The trek is around 5+h up and 3-4h down, making it a total of 9h to 10h, depending on your speed. The total elevation is \~1300m up and down. It can and will be extremely tiring on your legs. The distance is can be a total of 14-16km in total!
It is generally tropical forest trail, with some rope portions, ladders and rock faces. It can be quite fun to go through the different terrain with the need to use your hands at some points.
However, if you have done Gunung Datuk before, the terrain is not that much of a surprise. The tough part is only the duration.
This is good for people who have some level of fitness and hiking experience. As this can be quite a challenging route, the group pace will be quite fast and we'll push at a certain speed.
There is a 1 guide to 7 hikers ratio. **There is also a cut-off timing to the summit/CP which we'll enforce more strictly compared to Sagil. If you fail to make it you will have to turn back unfortunately, as the distance is long. We aim to descend latest by 6pm.**

Some additional questions:
1. How long is the ride to Mount Ophir
A: It takes only around 3-4h from Singapore
2. The journey to Ophir only takes 3 hours, why do we set off so early?
A: This is so that we can save money on accommodation/driver cost/taxi to MRT station. This also means there is a lack of sleep, so try to sleep in the vehicle! Bring a travel pillow!
3. Are there shower or toilet facilities at the park?
A: Yes there are but basic. Expect using a hose/bucket. Also we'll most likely drop by a R&R. Please bring a change of clothes and shower when you are down from Ophir. No smelly people in the vehicle!
4. What do I have to look out for?
A: There are mosquitoes and leeches sometimes, depends on the weather.
5. Where is dinner?
We would have dinner in Tangkak at a cheap and nice chinese restaurant, if there are dietary concerns there are other options around the area also.

Lets do a 2-night backpacking trip over Memorial Day weekend!
The Mount Rogers/Grayson Highlands loop hike is an iconic section of the Appalachian Trail, located in the southwestern hills of Virginia within the Jefferson National Forest.
This region is best known for its vast mountain views and alpine peaks with **wild ponies** roaming about. This area is also home to Virginia's highest point, Mount Rogers, sitting at 5,729'. This is a premier east-coast backpacking destination, so don't miss this one.

We will meet at The Vienna Metro station on Saturday morning at 8am and drive to the Mt Rogers Trailhead (off Rt 603). This parking lot is **NOT** the paid lot near Masie Gap, and so can fill up. I'd like to try to get there as early as possible.
The drive is about 5 hours. I will drive and am happy to have others carpool with me - but please note, I will have my small black labrador in the back seat.
**Day 1**
After we park, we will hike about 7 miles to our campsite, diverting once to summit Mt Rogers. There arent any views here, but it's worth the .3 miles to say you've been to the highest point in VA! We will camp on the first night at the scenic tent sites near the Thomas Knob Shelter on the AT. There is water at this site and we may see wild ponies if we're lucky.
**Day 2**
The second day is about 10.7 miles, which includes spectacular views, unique rock formations and wide open grassy meadows. We will camp near the Old Orchard Shelter. There is a spring with water at this site as well.
**Day 3**
The third day will be a short 3.5 mile hike from camp back to the cars. Getting to the cars early will mean that we should get back to DC around 4-5pm. On the drive home, I plan to stop at Martin's in downtown Roanoke (413 1st St SW, Roanoke, VA 24011).

Adventuring's 47th Anniversary Hike to Hoover Camp in Shenandoah NP
This is a moderate circuit hike of 7.6 miles with 1320 feet of elevation gain on trails rich in both history and scenery.
Adventuring's very first hike occurred 47 years ago this month, as our Founders ventured out in 1979 to Hoover Camp in the heart of Virginia's Shenandoah National Park. It's an exceptionally scenic spot, where two modest streams (Mill Prong and Laurel Prong) merge to create the Rapidan River. Hoover Camp was originally built by President and Mrs. Herbert Hoover as a mountain hideaway and fishing retreat, a precursor to today's Camp David. Though many of the original structures have disappeared, the President's House (a.k.a. the Brown House) and the Prime Minister's Cabin survive to this day.
Our hike will begin at Milam Gap, just south of Big Meadows. We'll have one stream crossing at Big Rock Falls before we reach Hoover Camp, where we'll lunch on or near the porch of the Brown House and then explore the rest of the site. Our return route will first use the Laurel Prong Trail and then the Cat Knob Trail to reach the Appalachian Trail, which will take us back to our cars at Milam Gap.
We will decide at the end of the hike whether to enjoy refreshments at the charming New Market Taproom in Big Meadows Lodge or somewhere on the drive home.
Total length of this moderate circuit hike will be 7.6 miles with 1320 feet of elevation gain on the return leg. Bring plenty of beverages, lunch, sunscreen, sturdy boots, and $5 for the Adventuring trip fee. On the way to the hike, we'll stop at Sheetz in Warrenton so folks can pick up snacks or lunch. Carpool passengers should pay their drivers $20 (assuming each car has at least one rider with a Park Pass, which is usually the case).
Meet at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday morning May 23 in the Kiss & Ride Lot of the East Falls Church Metro Station at North Sycamore and 19th Streets, to your right as Metro riders leave the station's only exit.
