Leader: Dick Pregent (703) 587-2359 This is an 11.5 mile hike with minimal elevation changes. We'll start at the field house in back of South Run Recreation Center in Springfield. There's plenty of parking. We'll go around Burke Lake and stop for a snack. Then come back and go around Lake Mercer then return to the Recreation Center. We'll hike at about 2.5 MPH. The only challenge to this hike will be the distance and staying upright...most of the paths are packed with snow and ice. So wear your micro spikes if you are concerned about slipping. White Oak Canyon - Cedar Run loop - Frozen waterfalls (Rating: A+)
White Oak Canyon - Cedar Run loop - Frozen waterfalls (Rating: A+)
You must read the following NVHC Sign-in Sheet Statement/Liability Disclaimer, [https://nvhc.com/signin.pdf](https://nvhc.com/signin.pdf) and then answer the question that you will see when you RSVP with "I accept" to be permitted on the hike. **This hike is rated A+ due to the possibility of ice and/or significant snow along the trail route.** Under normal conditions, this would be an A hike that just misses being a B hike. Join me for a 8-mile loop hike in SNP to see the frozen waterfalls along White Oak Canyon and Cedar Run before the weather warms up and the effect is lost. We will start from the Lower White Oak Canyon parking lot and head up the White Oak Canyon Trail to Upper White Oak Falls. Then we will follow the White Oak Fire Road and the Skyland - Big Meadows Horse Trail to Cedar Run Trail, and take Cedar Run Trail back to the cars. **Traction gear required.** Snowshoes advised. There may be significant snow and ice on the trails. What is highly likely is icy trails due to the snow being compacted by previous hikers. As this hike is expected to be in below-freezing conditions, please dress in layers and avoid cotton. Ensure that you have proper footwear and insulation for your hands and feet. Also please bring along hand and foot warmers in case added heat is needed for those extremities. Meet at 7:30 at Centreville Park and Ride or at 9:15 am at the trailhead. Carpooling advised as I am not sure of what to expect at the parking area. I will be vetting people for this hike. Everyone will start off on the waitlist. I will take you off of it as I vet you. Please message me if you have not hiked with me previously or if you have any concerns about this hike. Also please be sure that I can message you if I have questions about your ability. I will move anyone I cannot message to "not going" due the inability to vet them. I also will move anyone who does not respond in a timely manner (meaning within a day or two) to "not going". I am looking for hikers with A+ hiking experience and winter hiking experience. This promises to be a spectacular hike, but it is one that you need to be well-prepared for. Bring lunch, snack, water (in a thermos or a camelback kept under your coat), an extra layer, and had/foot warmers. Realize that we may be warm going uphill but cooler coming downhill. Do not skimp on the water: 2 quarts are advised, just in case. Basics: * Distance: 8 miles * Elevation Gain: 2400' * Rating: A+ (due to added exertion caused by winter conditions). * Meetup Location: Centreville Park & Ride. (GPS Coordinates: 38.835789, -77.455532) * Centreville Meetup time 7:30 am * Traihead location: Lower White Oak Canyon parking lot. (GPS Coordinates: 38.539699, -78.349080) * Trailhead Meetup time: 9:15 am. * Hike start time: 9:30 am. * **Dogs not allowed** due to the expected adverse conditions. * Entry fee: Free due to the time of year. * Carpool fee: $8 suggested (riders pay drivers) Edward 703-850-3251
MO W1: Assateague (28 miles)
MO W1: Assateague (28 miles)
Let's go backpacking on a barrier island! I have wanted to do this trip since I missed it last year. \-\-\- below mostly copied from last time\-\-\- Assateague Island is a 37-mile long barrier island. It is known for its undeveloped beaches, wild horses, waterfowl, and the Assateague Lighthouse. This stretch of beach walking is some of the most pristine anywhere, at times veering into an almost meditative quality as you walk along the sand. And, oddly, even though it is essentially flat and a straight line, walking in sand is not exactly easy. You'll find yourself aiming for firm footing, and your feet (and everything else) will be sandy. Best to avoid heavy footwear here. Caveat; I've never done this trail before Trip rank is MO W1. I will keep "W1" for now. Temperatures may be below freezing at times, perhaps down to the teens. You can read more about trip ranks [here.](https://dculbackpacking.com/about/tripranks/) **Plan (Updated 1/21)** Here's what got so far (special thanks to Andrew for tips): We are planning to do a key swap shuttle. Looks like we have enough drivers at this point. I will rent a car if necessary. For now we'll assume all of the DC based car pool crew will meet at the Greenbelt Metro Station at \~7:45-8am. This may likely change as we figure out car pool configurations closer to the hike. All drivers will then meet at Maryland District Ranger Station/Campground Office. **We need the entire group assembled here before noon to pull the permit.** **\- Located** in the Maryland District of Assateague Island on west side of Bayberry Drive, after the entrance station. The GPS address is 6633 Bayberry Drive, Berlin, Maryland 21811. * https://maps.app.goo.gl/k5JNnJBgsP2Q1jUFA We'll get our permits, \- Note that the park service won't issue the permit in case of bad weather\. Will call if it seems necessary\. Half group will stay and start in MD (SOBOs). The other half of hikers will go to the VA side (NOBOs, preferably the faster hikers). We can do the swapped leg up front. After pulling the permit, NOBOs will drive SOBOs’ cars to the VA southern terminus to stage them. When the groups meet at the campsite, we’ll swap keys. That way each person finishes at their terminus with their own car + keys. Parking: \- For those starting in Maryland\, park at North Beach \(not far from ranger station\); \- For those starting in Virginia\, go to Herbert H\. Bateman Educational and Administrative Center\. Staff will provide parking information\. Vehicles must display parking tag obtained with permit\. https://maps\.app\.goo\.gl/scc77myoRAD5nBzM8 * Side note: Tom's Cover visitor center in VA is permanently closed (Nov 2025). Will be demolished We'll do splits of about 14 / 14. There is no freshwater on the island so plan to start will all the water you'll need for the trip. Depending on wind, we'll either camp at Stateline (on the beach side) or Pope Bay (on the bay side). Expect the camp ground to be sand. **Resources** Caltopo TBD (this is 99% walking in a straight line but I'll probably still make one) Locations: [Greenbelt Metro](https://maps.app.goo.gl/FWTMyBM5Qpy1CNLe6) [Ranger Station for Permit and MD Parking](https://maps.app.goo.gl/k5JNnJBgsP2Q1jUFA) [Herbert H. ([https://dculbackpacking.com/about/liability-waiver](https://dculbackpacking.com/about/liability-waiver/#more-110)) * If you are a member, don't forget to pay your annual $10 dues. You can check to see if you need to pay dues by seeing if the current year is listed next to your name in your DC UL profile. Applicants do not need to pay dues for their first trip with the group. To pay your dues via PayPal, use this link: [https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/JenniferAdach/15](https://www.paypal.com/paypalme/JenniferAdach/15) * All non-drivers should expect to pay $0.10 per mile to their driver, in accordance with the DC UL carpool policy.

Join **Daclaud** at **The Arcane Foundry** for an evening that introduces newcomers and enthusiasts alike to the timeless craft of **tabletop wargaming** and **miniature painting**. My own journey began with a fascination for fantasy — knights in armor, grim and hardened warriors, and monstrous creatures locked in epic battle. That passion led me to **Dungeons & Dragons**, where I painted my first **Basic Heroes set** and felt the spark that comes from bringing a character to life in miniature form. Not long after, I discovered **Warhammer Fantasy** and **Warhammer 40,000**, and I was hooked. The vision of vast armies clashing across the table — each unit meticulously painted, each story unfolding through dice and imagination — became my creative obsession. During this event, we’ll explore the **origins of wargaming**, from its early military simulations to the richly detailed worlds of modern tabletop battle systems. You’ll learn how to **build and customize your own armies**, paint your first figures, and experience the joy of turning strategy and storytelling into a hands-on art form. Whether you’re drawn by the lore, the hobby, or the thrill of commanding miniature legions, this introduction will open the gates to a world that has captivated hobbyists for generations. **🎨 RSVP today and join us at The Arcane Foundry — where every brushstroke and battle tells a story.**
