Sailing on Sundays for enthusiasts, old salts and beginners
Welcome to my sailboat. **Please read this notice**. These are crew opportunities, not for passengers, non-swimmers, people afraid of the water or get seasick. Bring a change of clothes, a towel, a hat, non-marking footwear with heelstrap and sunblock. There is a toilet and drinking water on board. Participants like to contribute to expenses in appreciation of this opportunity.
**Also**, please confirm your attendance by SMS or Whatsapp on Saturday for sailing on Sunday, to avoid no-shows and missed sailings. No-shows deprive others of a place, so be responsible and remove your reservation if you are not attending, and please do it in good time. Places unconfirmed by Saturday will not be reserved, and I can't wait for you if I'm not sure you're coming. Keep me informed and reply to my messages. Don't be late. Thank you. Derek 9807-5827.

April Book Club Meetup: Thick: And Other Essays by Tressie McMillan Cottom
Join us for a discussion of ***Thick: And Other Essays* by Tressie McMillan Cottom**
Here's the summary:
Tressie McMillan Cottom, the writer, professor, and acclaimed author of Lower Ed, now brilliantly shifts gears from running regression analyses on college data to unleashing another identity: a purveyor of wit, wisdom—and of course Black Twitter snark—about all that is right and much that is so very wrong about this thing we call society. In the bestselling tradition of bell hooks and Roxane Gay, McMillan Cottom’s freshman collection illuminates a particular trait of her tribe: being thick. In form, and in substance.
This bold compendium, likely to find its place on shelves alongside Lindy West, Rebecca Solnit, and Maggie Nelson, dissects everything from beauty to Obama to pumpkin spice lattes. Yet Thick will also fill a void on those very shelves: a modern black American female voice waxing poetic on self and society, serving up a healthy portion of clever prose and southern aphorisms in a style uniquely her own.
McMillan Cottom has crafted a black woman’s cultural bible, as she mines for meaning in places many of us miss and reveals precisely how—when you’re in the thick of it—the political, the social, and the personal are almost always one and the same.
**Let’s meet at Caboose Commons in Fairfax to enjoy some good discussion and meet new friends.**
Wine, Cheese and Cory Doctorow's "Enshittification"
We invite you to an engaging evening of wine, cheese and lively conversation around Cory Doctorow's ***Enshittification: Why Everything Suddenly Got Worse and What To Do About It,*** a book which explains the process of the “enshittification” of digital platforms over time and what to do about it.
**From Goodreads:**
Cory Doctorow's *Enshittification* takes a witty yet incisive look at the tech landscape, where platforms like TikTok, Facebook, and Google start off great—before they inevitably turn terrible. In this contemporary moment of digital decline, Doctorow explores how tech giants lure users in with convenience and then degrade their services over time, squeezing profit at the cost of user experience. With a mix of sharp humor and deep insight, he unveils the slow creep of "enshittification," turning the online world into a worse place, one algorithm at a time.
As always, please feel free to join even if you have not finished the book - no stress :-)
All attendees are asked to please bring one of the following:
1. A bottle of wine
2. Cheese and Crackers
3. An alternate beverage or nosh of your choice
Host will provide glasses, wine opener, plates & napkins.
To enhance the opportunity for great conversation, we would like to keep the group small. Please feel free to sign-up to meet us along with up to 2 friends.

The Frozen River by Ariel Lawhon
North Bethesda Fiction Readers, put a hold on this page-turner NOW if you get your books from a public library. This is another work of historical fiction for us. In it, Lawhon "creates a stirring portrait of a real-life heroine." You can read the entire Kirkus Review [here](https://www.kirkusreviews.com/book-reviews/ariel-lawhon/the-frozen-river/).
We will meet in the common area of a condominium association called The Gallery at White Flint: 11710 Old Georgetown Rd. The organizer will greet everyone at the entrance. If the seating at the fireplace across from the entrance is not appealing, we will convene in the organizer's home. The concierge will not likely be of much help, so if you are running late, please let the organizer know. There is metered parking across the street. There is ample parking at the Randolph Shopping Center, nearby: 12255 Nebel Street, Rockville.
