Kennington Book Club Pick #1: The Merge Thank you to all of you who have joined the group. For our very first read together, I thought we could dive into The Merge by Grace Walker. This book is set in a near-future world facing overpopulation and climate collapse. To address this society introduces a radical solution: merging two people into a single consciousness. But what begins as a bold fix quickly raises deeper questions about identity, love, and what it really means to be human. Looking forward to hearing everyone’s thoughts - I’m hoping this one should give us a lot to talk about. **We don’t do boring Wednesdays, and to mark the new year in style, we’re hosting one of our favourite adrenaline-fuelled midweek activity nights!** Yep that’s right, we’ll be back in the driver's seat again and heading to one London’s best indoor Go Karting tracks, **TeamSport Docklands** for an evening of fast-paced races. This indoor venue offers the fastest karts in Central London driving speeds of up-to 40mph, and a multi-Level track experience across over 800 metres. The night will start with a quick briefing to help you get to grips with the track, the rules, and how to get the most out of your kart. We’ll then hit the track for **two high-powered 15-minute races,** with a break in between so you can catch your breath. Once the racing’s done, there’s a podium to pose on if you manage to race your way to glory and the option to stick around in the venue’s bar to swap stories, share tactics, and toast your victories (or near misses). Artists of all ability are welcome at the All Good Bookshop Art Club. Each session has a theme to inspire creativity but there is no set image to create, allowing attendees to explore their own skills and interests. This mile-builder trip intends to sail well beyond the Solent, and is best-suited to people who've already done some sailing. This is a non-commercial trip run on a shared-cost basis.** *Plan* Our plan will be to arrive at Port Hamble Marina on Friday by 4pm latest. After a safety briefing and a tour of the yacht, we’ll most likely want to set sail that evening. Our cruising itinerary will be tailored to the weather, tides, and the group’s wishes, but the idea is to undertake some longer passages across to Cherbourg or Alderney, or down the South West Coast towards Weymouth. There'll be time to swim and relax, but there'll also be times when we're at sea for c.15 hours, including sailing at night and running a watch system. We'll return to Port Hamble Marina around lunchtime on Monday. *Yacht* We’ve chartered a modern 37ft Beneteau Oceanis that’s licensed to carry 8 people, but we’ll be a maximum of 6 plus skipper to ensure everyone has enough space and a proper chance to be involved in the sailing. Accommodation will be aboard the yacht in shared double cabins. The boat will have hot and cold water, a loo, heating, and when on shore plenty of electricity for charging phones. Note that during offshore passages some cabins may be uncomfortable for sleeping in, and therefore some 'hot bunking' may be required as part of the watch system. *Skipper* The Skipper is yet to be decided but will be an experienced sailor from the club, most likely assisted by a skipper in training from the club's Take The Helm scheme. More information will follow on them and their experience. *Kit* No special or expensive sailing kit required. Just bring practical footwear and clothing to suit the weather forecast. It gets cold offshore at night, so bring warm layers plus a warm hat and gloves. Lifejackets are provided. Foul weather gear can be hired locally if needed. Towels and bedding aren’t provided, so please bring a towel, pillow and sleeping bag. Don't forget to pack sunglasses, sunscreen, passport, swimming kit and, if you have one, a headtorch with a red bulb. The cost is £385 per person, which covers the yacht charter (as it's a bank holiday weekend charter costs are higher than usual but we are able to benefit from a the club's 15% discount), fuel, marina/harbour fees, breakfasts, lunches, snacks and soft drinks, as well as a £5 contribution to the club's Muck Up Fund which allows us to help skippers on club trips manage the risk of accidental damage caused by trip participants. It doesn’t cover evening meals ashore or getting yourself to/from the trip. A deposit of £100 on booking is required to secure your place, with the balance payable three months before the event. Note that, because this trip is being advertised via the London Sailing Club’s platforms, any participant who is not already a full member of the Club (which costs £24 per year) will need to join prior to the start of the trip. *Visas / Immigration* This trip may involve crossing an international border. For UK and EU passport holders any visa process is likely to be straightforward. However if you have an overseas passport, or a particular visa situation, it is your responsibility to ensure you have whatever paperwork you need in place to travel to France and/or the Channel Islands. **🏛️ WHAT'S PRACTICAL PHILOSOPHY ABOUT?** Practical Philosophy is a weekly meet-up that brings critical thinkers together for an opportunity to dive deep on a topic, practice communicating, and building a community. All with no ‘official’ philosophy knowledge required! 😎 Practical Philosophy is based on the idea that philosophy should be accessible to all, and not something reserved only for academics. Each week we choose a topic, and the goal is to use the conversation to develop our critical thinking and communication as we explore that topic. The goal is to help develop our Critical Thinking, Communication, and Community 🙌 📓 **HOW DOES IT WORK?** Each week, we pick one topic and discuss it. The topic for the week is shared, generally in the [Whatsapp group](https://chat.whatsapp.com/B6fqS6HGujq8gb3a0kl5pS), along with jump-off points to get the conversation going. When groups get bigger than 7-8 people, it’s important that we break into smaller groups. This way we are able to maintain a conversational flow as opposed to having our meetups feel like a discourse or lecture. **General Meeting Agenda** Each Practical Philosophy meet-up follows this general timeline: * 13:45-14:00 - People arrive and chat, get to know each other before the ‘official' start. * 14:00-14:05 - Meeting introduction, explanation of Practical Philosophy and the topic for the week, read the guidelines and the overview so attendees know what to expect in terms of timelines. * 14:05-14:45 - Break into small groups - introduce yourselves and general thoughts on the topic, open discussion afterwards. At this point the group can review the ‘jump-off’ questions as needed, but they are just there to help guide the conversation. It’s not obligatory to answer them. * 14:45 - We do a group conclusion of the things we discussed, and then we typically take a photo and go on our way :) If you don't want to be in the group photo, there's no pressure, it's just a way to close out the meeting.
