In the distant future, medical student Driscoll Rampart begins his internship on Rusta, a rural planet that doesn't rotate around its axis, with the result that one side is always day and the other always night. The light region is a Victorian-style colony, the dark a medieval kingdom. Both leave Rampart in a state of constant wonder, as he finds his way among humans and aliens, strange dreams and even stranger reality. This made-for-TV movie was the pilot for a series that was never made. Heavy on philosophy and complicated relationships, it was too daunting for test audiences of the time; were it introduced today, it might get a better reception. ■ Title — *White Dwarf* ■ Director — Peter Markle ■ Cast — Paul Winfield, Neal McDonough, Ele Keats ■ Unrated, suitable for general audiences ■ ©1995 \| 1h 30m \| Drama\, Sci\-Fi ■ Watch it free with ads on Fawesome: https://fawesome.tv/movies/10528834/white-dwarf ■ Watch it free with ads on Tubi: https://tubitv.com/movies/100011575/white-dwarf ■ As with most of our online features, you can watch this one whenever you like. What it has historically lacked is fast, native money. Lightning changes that by removing friction around liquidity, payouts, and trust, making real-value play possible at global scale. We’ll explore THNDR’s approach to skill-based gaming, her perspective on the current state of Lightning and peer-to-peer payments, and why gaming may be one of the most natural places for real money on the internet to finally make sense. 👉 [RSVP on LUMA](https://luma.com/sql8olur) **About the Bitcoin District Initiative** The Bitcoin District Initiative is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit working to build a grassroots Bitcoin circular economy in Washington, DC through education, business onboarding, and community outreach programs. RESCHEDULED Keys Gap to David Lesser Shelter (7 miles, 948 ft)
RESCHEDULED Keys Gap to David Lesser Shelter (7 miles, 948 ft)
*This hike was originally scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 24, and is being postponed to Sunday, Feb. 1 because of snow. While Saturday isn't supposed to be snowy during the day, we are concerned about folks getting stuck in the beginnings of it on the drive home. We apologize for anyone who can't make it on Feb. 1 but hope to see you on another hike soon.* Join us for a pleasant and relatively gentle hike on the Appalachian Trail in Virginia. The highlight of this hike is the David Lesser Shelter, which features a swing, large seating and picnic areas and other minor attractions. The trail has only a moderate amount of elevation. However, we consider this hike moderately challenging due to its length. We’ll move at a steady 2-3 mph pace with a break at the aforementioned Lesser Shelter, which is also our turn-around point. We'll take other quick breaks on the trail as needed. Please carry a minimum of 1 to 1.5L of water with you. After the hike we will go to nearby Harvest Gap Brewery. Meet time & location: We'll meet at 8:15 am at the East Falls Church (EFC) metro station to consolidate into as few cars as possible given the limited parking at the trailhead. The trailhead is about an hour from EFC. Route: https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/west-virginia/appalachian-trail-keys-gap-to-david-lesser-memorial-shelter Brewery (also has food): https://harvestgap.com/ CARPOOLING: We encourage those with cars to be willing to carpool - you're the ones who make LMH great! If you're a driver that is willing to drive, please post a comment on the event page with the following information: (1) Number of seats (2) Meeting location (3) Meeting time As a rider, please comment on the driver's post to take a seat or post in the comments that you need a ride so a driver can find you. Riders are encouraged to help their driver out with the cost of gas. By signing up for this event, you acknowledge and agree that Late Morning Hikers, its volunteer organizers, and drivers who volunteer to carpool are not responsible or liable for accidents, injuries, damage, or losses that may occur while traveling to or from the hike. Late Morning Hikers does not condone or encourage impaired driving. Drivers are expected to follow applicable laws and make responsible transportation choices. We look forward to hiking with you! VSDC @Compassionate Conversations™: Tu B’Shvat - Jewish New Year for Trees
VSDC @Compassionate Conversations™: Tu B’Shvat - Jewish New Year for Trees
[Veg Society of DC](https://vsdc.org/) (VSDC) is pleased to join with [The Ark of Compassion ](https://theaoc.org/)(AOC) to co-host Compassionate Conversations™ on Sunday, Feb. 1 at [Siena's Vegetarian Pizzeria & Italian Restaurant](https://sienasrestaurant.com/). **Talk Title: Tu B’Shvat - Jewish New Year for Trees** **Speaker: John Netzel, founder of [Peaceful Fields Sanctuary](https://peacefulfieldssanctuary.org/)** **Event Description** Our guest speaker is John Netzel, founder of [Peaceful Fields Sanctuary](https://peacefulfieldssanctuary.org/) and longtime vegan advocate. John’s work is grounded in Jewish values such as tikkun olam (repairing the world), compassion for all living beings, and mindful stewardship of creation. His story bridges faith, ethics, and action, offering a powerful reflection on how plant-based living connects with Tu B’Shvat’s deeper spiritual themes. In this uplifting conversation, John will share: • How Jewish teachings inspired him to build a sanctuary for rescued farmed animals
 • The connection between compassion, environmental care, and Tu B’Shvat’s call to honor the earth
 • What we can learn from animals about responsibility, community, and kindness
 • How plant-forward choices can deepen our practice of tikkun olam No prior knowledge of Judaism or veganism is required. This event is open to everyone who enjoys good food, meaningful conversation, and learning from diverse perspectives. **Why This Event Matters** Tu B’Shvat invites us to reflect on: • Our relationship with the earth
 • Our responsibility to protect creation
 • Our gratitude for the abundance of the natural world By pairing this holiday with a plant-based meal and a conversation led by a sanctuary founder living out Jewish compassion in action, we hope to create a meaningful bridge between tradition, ethics, and modern food choices. **About the Venue** We’ll gather at [Siena’s](https://sienasrestaurant.com/), a beloved kosher vegetarian Italian-Mediterranean restaurant and community gem. Attendees may order directly from Siena’s extensive [vegan menu](https://sienasrestaurant.com/food-menu). . Questions? Contact [info@theaoc.org](mailto:info@theaoc.org) or Aashish Bhimani at [703-231-0291](tel:7032310291) (text preferred). **•** **Cost/Food: Order at the counter (no set ticket price)** **Update Your RSVP** Out of respect for others interested in attending this limited-space event, please update your RSVP promptly as your schedule changes. **[The Ark of Compassion](https://theaoc.org/)** (AOC) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting animal welfare through education, outreach, and partnerships that inspire beneficial change for all life. It creates inclusive spaces for conversation and action, helping launch events and ideas that bring people together. Dale Gnidovec, Curator of the Orton Hall Museum of Geology at The Ohio State University, will be presenting a program he has wanted to share with us for a long time: Plate Tectonics. His description of his program: Continents on the move - Nothing in Earth history makes sense without moving continents - it tells us why mountains, volcanoes, minerals, and fossils are where they are. This talk examines the evidence for continental drift, why it was disbelieved, and explains how the more-encompassing theory of plate tectonics was developed and eventually proven. Dale is an energetic, incredibly knowledgeable, and very entertaining speaker and this will be another wonderful program by Dale. Hope to see you there! Food and drinks will be provided at the event.
