Profs & Pints DC: Gaining Greenland, Losing a Continent?
Profs & Pints DC: Gaining Greenland, Losing a Continent?
[Profs and Pints DC](https://www.profsandpints.com/washingtondc) presents: **“Gaining Greenland, Losing a Continent?”** on the historic roots and political drivers of an unexpected international crisis, with Garret Martin, senior professorial lecturer at American University’s School of International Service and co-director of its Transatlantic Policy Center. [Advance tickets: $13.50 plus sales tax and processing fees. Available at [https://www.ticketleap.events/tickets/profsandpints/dc-greenland](https://www.ticketleap.events/tickets/profsandpints/dc-greenland) .] Most Americans did not give much thought to Greenland prior to the start of President Trump’s second term. That changed, however, in the early weeks of January, when our nation’s President seemed intent on taking over the large island, long part of the Kingdom of Denmark. His demands for the island risked tearing apart the transatlantic alliance, as shown during the Davos World Economic Forum. And while Trump eventually backed down, the crisis could resurface at any time. Gain an understanding of how Greenland found itself in the position of being an international flash point with Garret Martin, an expert on Europe, NATO, foreign policy and transatlantic relations who has given excellent Profs and Pints talks in the past. You’ll learn how the United States’ interest in Greenland has deep roots, dating back to expansion interests in the 19th Century, and strengthened by the island’s security role during the Cold War. We’ll also look at how the abundance of critical minerals in Greenland make it the subject of particular attention, and how interest in Greenland is fundamentally tied to drastic changes occurring in the Arctic. Not only is climate change likely to significantly increase maritime traffic via northern routes, there also is growing concern that the increasing accessibility of the Arctic could make it a major source of military tension between great powers. Finally, Dr. Martin will discuss Greenland as a story of emancipation, describing how the island has sought in past decades to carve greater autonomy from Denmark. You’ll gain an appreciation of how Greenland sits at the intersection of economic security, environmental change, great power rivalry, tensions over sovereignty, and change within the transatlantic alliance, and thus is likely to remain the subject of considerable international attention well into the future. (Doors: $17, or $15 with a student ID. Listed time is for doors. Talk starts 30 minutes later.) Image: Greenland’s coast as photographed by Robert Eime (Creative Commons).

Powering the Future of American Farming
Powering the Future of American Farming
What if the American small farm could double as a high-tech power plant and farmers could become their own bank? Join us at PubKey DC for an exploration of a new frontier in rural land use. We’re sitting down with Mark Smith, CEO of [Carbon Country](https://www.carboncountry.us/), and Hunter Budd from the Digital Energy Council to break down a scalable model for the modern grower. 👉 [RSVP on LUMA](https://luma.com/fdvf8zd4) You’ll get an inside look at how integrating agrivoltaics (solar + grazing) with on-site Bitcoin mining creates a financial "flywheel" for regenerative agriculture. By monetizing excess energy and sequestering carbon through biochar, this model offers small farms a path toward energy independence and diversified revenue. Come find out how the intersection of Bitcoin and land stewardship is building a more resilient, decentralized grid—one pasture at a time. Read more about [Carbon Country on their website](https://www.carboncountry.us/). 👉 [RSVP on LUMA](https://luma.com/fdvf8zd4) **About the Bitcoin District Initiative** This event was organized by The Bitcoin District Initiative, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit working to build a grassroots Bitcoin circular economy in Washington, DC through education, business onboarding, and community outreach programs. Discover DC Boundary Stones in Maryland-NW Stone 4 to North Corner Stone
Discover DC Boundary Stones in Maryland-NW Stone 4 to North Corner Stone
This is the third hike along the original boundary line between the nation’s capital, Virginia, and Maryland. See stones placed every mile along the boundary survey line in 1792. These stones are the first federal monuments in the nation’s capital. Initially, we will hike a short distance along the Capital Crescent Trail to view NW Stone 4, which is on Delcarlia Reservoir grounds. We will come back to our meeting location and hike north along Norton Street and Loughboro Road (restroom opportunity at Sibley Hospital) to Delcarlia Parkway. We will hike a short distance along Delcarlia Parkway and then on Spring Valley neighborhood streets to Warren Place and Delcarlia Parkway, where we will get you as close as we can to the location of NW Stone 5, which is also on Delcarlia Reservoir grounds. We will hike Spring Valley neighborhood streets to Massachusetts Avenue and Western Avenue at Westmorland Circle, and then on sidewalks along Western Avenue (NW stones 6, 7, and 8 are in front yards along Western Avenue), on trails through the northern portion of Rock Creek Park(NW 9 is adjacent to the park), and on sidewalks along streets in Silver Spring (North corner stone is just south of East-West Highway, west of 16th Street) to the Silver Spring Metro Station. Total distance is approximately 10.5 miles. We will meet 9:30 am, Thursday, February 26, 2026, at the connector trail to the Capital Crescent Trail (Norton Street and Potomac Avenue NW). Parking is available in the area. Public transportation to and from the hike works. If you drive, you can take metro and a bus back to your vehicle. Occasional restroom opportunities are available along the hike route. Bring water, lunch or snacks, and dress for the weather. Sun protection (such as hat & sunglasses) is recommended if the weather is sunny or partly sunny. All participants must sign a liability waiver at the start. SCPRO requests a voluntary donation of $2 per person to help support our all-volunteer program. You need not be a Sierra Club member to participate, but if you'd like to join, go to: [http://www.sierraclub.org/virginia](http://www.sierraclub.org/virginia).

Normal process • Complete an online application (http://rmhc-centralohio.org/volunteer/). • Attend orientation in advance. • At orientation you will complete forms agreeing to keep family/patient info private and allowing a background check and tour the facility. • Complete one training shift. Daily shifts are: morning 9 AM - 1 PM, afternoon 1 - 5 PM and evening 5 - 9 PM. • Schedule shifts online using the on the RMH scheduling system (http://www.volgistics.com/ex/portal.dll/?FROM=32895). COUNT has been volunteering there since May 2014. Housewarmers work with RMH guests to provide a home-like environment - greet, assist with family needs, answer phones, give tours, assist with checkin/checkout, prepare guest rooms after checkout, clean facility, laundry, restock supplies and staff the front desk.
