The Book Club in London
A relaxed London book club exploring the most influential book in history. Whether you think it’s rubbish, holy, or you’re simply not sure what to make of it, you’re very welcome.
We meet for two hours at a time. Our reading list includes books from the Bible — as well as some of the books that didn’t make it into most Bibles. The Bible has shaped culture, law, art and ethics for centuries, yet many people are personally unfamiliar with it.
Each evening is structured but informal. The group chooses the book or books to read, and discussion takes place in small groups. No lectures. No pressure. No need to prepare anything in advance. The aim is thoughtful, respectful conversation.
Plenty of people feel they know quite a bit about the Bible, yet struggle to read it. This is a space to explore it thoughtfully and honestly — in good company.
This club is for:
• Curious thinkers
• Skeptics
• Christians with questions
• Anyone who wants to make up their own mind
Our only rules?
Be curious.
Be honest.
Be kind.
And enjoy yourself.
It’s also a chance to find a bit of community along the way.
Photos may be taken during the evening to share on the Meetup page or social media to help others see what the group is like. If you prefer not to appear in photos, just let the organiser know at any time.
We meet in a private room on the second floor of the Duke of Sussex pub. When you arrive, get yourself a drink, ask for The Book Club, and come on up.

**The Venue: [Shinner and Sudtone](https://shinnerandsudtone.co.uk/)**[ ](https://shinnerandsudtone.co.uk/)
A lovely little pub with a variety of craft beer. Usually quiet on a Monday and we get the upstairs area. They serve food and dogs are most welcome.
**The Book:** ***[The Names by Florence Knapp](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/217245618-the-names?ac=1&from_search=true&qid=YJn2SSyNrj&rank=2).***
In the wake of a catastrophic storm, Cora sets off with her nine-year-old daughter, Maia, to register the birth of her son. Her husband, Gordon, respected in the community but a controlling presence at home, intends for her to follow a long-standing family tradition and name the baby after him. But when faced with the decision, Cora hesitates....
Spanning thirty-five years, what follows are three alternate and alternating versions of their lives, shaped by Cora's last-minute choice of name. In richly layered prose, *The Names* explores the painful ripple effects of domestic abuse, the messy ties of family, and the possibilities for autonomy and healing.
Dinner at Hawksmoor St Pancras with BYO
Hawksmoor is an award-winning chain of British steakhouses and cocktail bars, serving British grass-fed, dry-aged beef and sustainably sourced seafood. Giles Coren praised it as "great, great steak. Best you’ll find anywhere....'. The newest restaurant in the group is 'A London icon inside a London icon'. Hawksmoor St Pancras brings Hawksmoor's obsession over steak, seafood and cocktails to Sir George Gilbert Scott’s Grade I-listed Gothic Revival masterpiece. Alongside one of London's most stunning, grandest dining rooms there is an incredible high-ceilinged bar and terrace.
The menu at Hawksmoor focuses on meat, though not exclusively as there are fish and vegetarian options. We'll be having the **a la carte menu** https://thehawksmoor.com/locations/st-pancras/food/menu/
As well as the amazing food, **on Mondays Hawksmoor offers** **BYO for £5 per bottle corkage,** and for our table of 8 people I will take **6 bottles with an average retail cost of £20.** As the menu is meat-heavy, I will take 1 bottle of champagne or equivalent quality sparkling wine, 2 white wines, and **3 red wines** (but no dessert wine). With typical restaurant mark-ups these wines would cost £60+ on their wine list, so this is a great opportunity to enjoy delicious food accompanied by fine wines without paying restaurant prices (for the wine that is!).
The pre-pay for this event is £58 which includes:-
\- the 6 bottles of BYO wine
\- corkage fees on the wine
\- £30 credit towards your food bill
\- paypal/meetup fees
The wine which I will take is an integral of this event so please do NOT ask if you can attend if you are not happy to share in all 6 bottles of wine. On the evening you will pay for the balance of your food bill and any additional drinks you order.
**Please note that Meetup now charge an additional fee to attendees on top of the price which the Organiser sets. This fee is paid direct to Meetup and is beyond our control.**
**REFUND POLICY:** If you cancel your place by Friday 10th latest you will get a refund of £55 but, IMPORTANT PLEASE NOTE, only if there is someone on the 'waitlist' who books and pays for your place.
**TRANSPORT:** The nearest station is Kings Cross
**WAITLIST:** If this event is fully booked and you would like to attend if someone cancels, post a comment in the event to let me know that you are interested.
Cheers,
Christos

A Little about my event!
London is packed—on the Tube, at gigs, at restaurants, everywhere you go. And yet, for many of us (especially expats), it can feel unexpectedly lonely.
Making friends here doesn’t just happen accidentally—it happens intentionally.
That’s how I found my people: book clubs, movie nights, small, cosy gatherings. Now, I want to create that same environment for others, in the way that feels most natural to me—over food.
Food is how I unwind after a long day at work, how I stay close to home, and how I learn about new cultures—whether I’m adapting foreign flavors to my restricted chicken-etarian diet or my boyfriend’s vegan one. I have found that while pub catch-ups with friends are fun, the most organic and enriching conversations and connections happen in a homely environment around a shared table of food.
My supper club is about bringing people together for good drinks, comforting fusion food, ice-breaker games, and workshops with kind, curious people.
Come hungry. Leave a little fuller—in every way. 🌿🍽️
Hope to see you there.

April’s Bingo Book Club: Circe by Madeline Miller 🧙♀️🏺✨🌿
**[Circe](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/35959740-circe) by Madeline Miller**
📖 393 pages
Genre: Greek Mythology • Retelling • Literary Fiction
**Summary:**
Banished to a lonely island for daring to defy the gods, Circe grows up in the shadow of power she was never meant to wield. From the halls of Olympus to the shores of her exile, she encounters legendary figures, monsters, and mortals alike, slowly discovering her own strength in a world ruled by cruelty, pride, and divine politics.
Richly atmospheric and deeply human, *Circe* reimagines Greek myth through the eyes of a woman finding her voice. It’s a story about transformation, loneliness, love, and choosing your own fate, even when the gods would rather you stay small.

Deeper Discussions - Fiction Book Club 📚💬
Join us for a special edition of Deeper Discussions, where we dive into thought-provoking **fiction** that challenges perspectives, sparks imagination, and opens doors to meaningful conversations. Whether you're a lifelong reader or rediscovering the joy of novels, this is a space to explore stories that stay with you long after the final page.
**This Month's Book - One hundred years of solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez**
One Hundred Years of Solitude follows generations of the Buendía family in the fictional town of Macondo.
It blends everyday life with magical, surreal events in a dreamlike style.
The story explores time, memory, and the repeating patterns of family life.
**How does it work?**
* Brief introductions and reflections on what struck you most
* Moderated discussion exploring plot, themes, and characters
* Open conversation where different interpretations are welcomed ️
* We wrap up by sharing insights and connections made
**What to Expect?**
**Close Reading:** We go beyond surface-level plot summary. Expect discussions that examine the author's choices, narrative techniques, and the questions left lingering in the silence between pages.
**Thoughtful Dialogue:** This isn't a race to share opinions—it's a space for genuine exploration. We listen, we reflect, we build on each other's insights.
**Meaningful Connections:** Great fiction holds up a mirror to the human experience. Through discussing characters' choices and moral dilemmas, we often discover something about ourselves and each other.
**How to get the most out of this event?**
**Finish the Book:** Please attend only if you've completed the book. Spoilers will flow freely, and the richest discussions come from those who've made the full journey.
**Ground it in the Text:** Bring your interpretations, but anchor them in what's actually on the page. Quote passages. Reference scenes. Let the author's words guide us.
**Respect & Openness:** Every interpretation matters. Make space for quieter voices. Challenge ideas, not people. Stay curious rather than defensive.
**Why a Fiction Book Club?**
**Explore the Human Condition:** Fiction lets us inhabit lives we'll never live, forcing us to confront questions about identity, morality, love, and loss.
**Sharpen Your Thinking:** Close reading develops critical thinking—noticing what the author chose to include, exclude, and how the story is told matters as much as what happens.
**Deepen Connections:** Discussing characters' choices and moral dilemmas creates surprisingly intimate conversations with fellow readers.
**Who is this event for?**
* You find yourself thinking about books long after you've finished them
* You want more from book discussions than "I liked it" or "I didn't"
* You're curious how others interpret the same story differently
* You value thoughtful dialogue over debate ️✨
* You're looking for meaningful connections with fellow readers
**What's in it for you?**
* **Fresh Perspectives:** Discover interpretations you'd never have considered alone
* **Deeper Understanding:** Unpack themes and symbols that enrich your reading
* **Genuine Connection:** Bond with others over shared literary experiences
* **A Space to Think:** Slow down from the noise and engage with ideas that matter
**Ready to dive deeper into stories that matter?**
Join us for an evening where fiction becomes a gateway to understanding ourselves and each other. ✨
**We really hope to see you there!**

April Book: "The Highly Sensitive Person" by Elaine Aron
Our April book is "The Highly Sensitive Person" by Elaine Aron.
Join us for exploring the fascinating trait of high sensitivity, in Dr. Aron's pioneering book! Researchers believe approximately 20% of the human population has this trait that affects every dimension of a person's life, including mental and physical health, relationships, and more.
Curious if you are highly sensitive? Dr. Aron's Self-Test Questionnaire is available on her website.
[Are You Highly Sensitive?](https://hsperson.com/test/highly-sensitive-test/)
Also, there's recently been a documentary on the topic of high sensitivity, where Dr. Aron discusses the trait. Here is a trailer. The full movie is available for free on YouTube.
[Sensitive: The Untold Story](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nXlOyGuvfVE)
We'll start the meeting with each person sharing their name and one thing they found interesting or helpful about the book, then have open discussion.
Here is the Amazon description of the book:
"ARE YOU A HIGHLY SENSITIVE PERSON?
Do you have a keen imagination and vivid dreams? Is time alone each day as essential to you as food and water? Are you noted for your empathy? Your conscientiousness? Do noise and confusion quickly overwhelm you? If your answers are yes, you may be a highly sensitive person (HSP) and Dr. Elaine Aron’s The Highly Sensitive Person is the life-changing guide you’ll want in your toolbox.
Over twenty percent of people have this amazing, innate trait. Maybe you are one of them. A similar percentage is found in over 100 species, because high sensitivity is a survival strategy. It is also a way of life for HSPs.
In this 25th anniversary edition of the groundbreaking classic, Dr. Elaine Aron, a research and clinical psychologist as well as an HSP herself, helps you grasp the reality of your wonderful trait, understand your past in the light of it, and make the most of it in your future. Drawing on her many years of study and face-to-face time spent with thousands of HSPs, she explains the changes you will need to make in order to lead a fuller, richer life.
Along with a new Author’s Note, the latest scientific research, and a fresh discussion of anti-depressants, this edition of The Highly Sensitive Person is more essential than ever for creating the sense of self-worth and empowerment every HSP deserves and our planet needs."
