The Wisdom of Emptiness: Discovering the True Nature of Reality
The Wisdom of Emptiness: Discovering the True Nature of Reality
Buddha’s teachings on the wisdom of realizing emptiness reveal how things actually exist. At present, due to deep-rooted ignorance, we perceive people and situations as existing independently from our mind and assign them fixed qualities — good or bad, attractive or unattractive. This mistaken view gives rise to emotional turmoil and the many problems that follow. Through meditating on emptiness, we discover that all things exist as mere appearances to mind. Understanding this frees us from grasping, allowing us to relate to our world with greater flexibility, peace, and joy — like recognizing we are dreaming and gaining control within the dream. In this course, Gen Demo will explain the second stage of Mahamudra from Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso’s Oral Instructions of Mahamudra and guide practical meditations on emptiness, showing how to apply this liberating wisdom in daily life. * **Cost**:$30/Financial Hardship: $15 Online: $30 Online Plus/General/Friend/Supporter: $15 Benefactors & Benefactor Plus: Free * Event Schedule Session 1: 1pm-2:15pm Session 2: 3pm-4:15pm Optional Wishfulfilling Jewel with tsog: 4:30pm-5:30pm **To Register: [Click Here](https://meditation-dc.org/event/the-wisdom-of-emptiness-discovering-the-true-nature-of-reality/)** * The Teacher ![Teacher Image](https://meditation-dc.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/IMG_4560.jpeg) This course is taught by Gen Kelsang Demo. Gen Kelsang Demo is the US Midwestern National Spiritual Director and the Resident Teacher at the International Kadampa Retreat Center Grand Canyon. She has been a student of Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso Rinpoche for more than 29 years and has been teaching Kadampa Buddhism since 1998. She is also the former Resident Teacher at KMC DC. Gen Demo is deeply respected as a teacher and practitioner. She demonstrates a wealth of practical knowledge and provides clear and inspiring teachings for people of all levels of interest.

**ONLINE** Mindfulness Meditation with Hugh Byrne
**ONLINE** Mindfulness Meditation with Hugh Byrne
**NOW ONLINE** The weekly Sunday morning (10:30 am to 12 noon) class begins with a welcome, short reflection on an aspect of the teachings, and includes an arriving meditation (15 minutes) that will often incorporate poems and may end with a reflection or question. The opening meditation is followed by an invitation to each person to share their name and a few words (for example, what is alive for them right now or what their intention is for the class or the day). The sharing has been a powerful support to help welcome new people, get to know each other, and build community/sangha. Following a brief period of mindful stretching/movement, we finish with a longer meditation (25-30 minutes) and final reflections on the teachings, sharing, Q&A, and announcements. Class participants are welcome to stay and engage with other members of the community or adjourn to a neighboring restaurant or coffee shop. This space is inclusive, everyone is welcome, and we invite you to bring with you all aspects of yourself. Book comparison: Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia, and Northanger Abbey
Book comparison: Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia, and Northanger Abbey
For January we will be reading **Mexican Gothic** by Silvia Garcia-Moreno and comparing with Austen's **Northanger Abbey**. Feel free to bring light snacks and drinks in closed containers. We'll meet in our usual room at the Central Branch of the Howard County Library in Columbia and likely relocate to a restaurant nearby to socialize after the official discussion is over. We hope you can join us! Here are some questions to guide your reading (thanks ChatGPT): 1. **How does each novel use classic Gothic elements (creepy houses, secrets, vulnerable heroines)?** Did you feel the Gothic atmosphere was meant to scare you, make you think, or make you laugh in each case? 2. **How do Noemí and Catherine differ in how they respond to fear and uncertainty?** What do their reactions tell us about their personalities and the worlds they live in? 3. **Imagination vs. reality is central to both books—how does this play out differently?** In *Northanger Abbey*, Catherine often imagines danger where there is none; in *Mexican Gothic*, Noemí doubts danger that turns out to be very real. How did this reversal affect your reading experience? 4. **What role does the house play in each story?** How did High Place and the Tilney estate shape the mood, power dynamics, and sense of threat (or misunderstanding)? 5. **How do the books portray control and authority, especially by older men?** Compare General Tilney with the Doyle family—whose power felt more unsettling, and why? 6. **What did you notice about how each author is responding to the Gothic genre itself?** *Northanger Abbey* pokes fun at Gothic novels, while *Mexican Gothic* reclaims and reshapes the genre. Which approach did you enjoy more, and why? \*\*\*Not an official Howard County Library System Event.\*\*\*

Starhawk Meditation Ritual
Starhawk Meditation Ritual
For those feeling the need to get in touch with their own personal power right about now, join MoonFire on Sunday, January 18 at 12:00 PM, to hear Starhawk's 45-minute taped guided meditation, "The Way To The Well." In the meditation, Starhawk will help you explore different aspects of your own power by inviting you to visit three different wells: the well of your own personal power, the well of “Power Over” (whether it’s power someone has over you, or you have over someone else), and the well of community power. If you’ve heard this meditation before, feel free to attend again, as you may hear or experience something differently or in a different way than a previous time. If desired, please bring a pillow, towel, or mat for comfort, and your journal. A potluck and time for fellowship will follow the ritual; you might like to bring food or drink to share, along with your own plates/utensils, or share our food and supply of washable re-usables. MoonFire holds ritual the 3rd Sunday of every month at the UU Church of Arlington, VA, starting at 12 PM with a pre-ritual briefing. Plan to arrive a little early so you can meet folks and get settled in. Rituals are usually followed by a potluck. We welcome everyone. So, the world of meditation has a lot to offer, and you have heard it all. This Meetup is about discovering the EXPERIENCE of meditation. As an added bonus, you will also get to experience some of the Art of Living Foundation's breathing programs and get an insight into what makes the Sudharshan Kriya tick. Try saying it 10 times in a row for some tongue twister fun! We are trying to hold meetups across MD but, for now, we will stick to the one free venue we have. Let us know if you want to host one of the meditation Meetups at your venue.. somewhere in MD though!
Meaningful Conversation and Morning Coffee - Alexandria
Meaningful Conversation and Morning Coffee - Alexandria
Higher Grounds – Del Ray is part of a growing network of gatherings where we create space for thoughtful, authentic dialogue about what matters most. Whether we’re exploring the nature of happiness, the challenges and possibilities of midlife, spirituality, culture, capitalism, parenting, or the role of art and travel in a meaningful life, every conversation is shaped by the people in the room. There’s no set leader or rigid agenda—just a shared commitment to listen as much as we speak. We start with brief introductions focused on what makes you *you* (not your LinkedIn bio), then dive straight into whatever is on people’s minds. The direction of each meetup emerges organically, making every event unique. MANDATORY: PLEASE REVIEW OUR COMMUNITY GUIDELINES IN THE GROUP DESCRIPTION. Everyone is expected to engage in respectful conversations and listen deeply as well as share. We have a zero tolerance policy of sexual harassment and hate speech. Free In-Person Events: How to Let Go of the Past and Move Forward
The emotional pain from past bad experiences easily lingers in the present, making it hard to enjoy life and create your future. Even when you think you've moved on, the negative emotions can be triggered, sending you back into the pain of that experience. And we are talking about pain; emotions such as grief, depression, anxiety, fear (or terror), boiling anger, simmering resentment, feelings of shame, blaming and regret can leave you incapacitated to a greater or lesser degree. In this local event we will be discussing the reasons why these past bad experiences have the power to affect you long after they occurred. We'll go over why the emotional pain can be so strong. We'll also discuss some simple solutions to overcome your emotional pain and be free to fully enjoy your life again. Examples of painful experiences include: * A broken relationship or divorce. * Death or loss of a loved one. * Death of a pet. * A sudden shock or bad news. * A betrayal. * Being part of an abusive relationship. * A bad injustice. * Loss of a job, position or business. * A grave illness or injury. The negative emotions from these experiences don't just go away on their own. But the good news is there is a way to clear them out of your way. Free In-person Meeting: Unwanted Emotions & Loneliness, How to Get Over Them
Free In-person Meeting: Unwanted Emotions & Loneliness, How to Get Over Them
This is an in-person meeting. Did you know that unwanted emotions like loneliness, sadness, hopelessness, anger, fear, anxiety, or feelings of irritation don’t just fall on you for no reason. They are not random occurrences that simply happen to people's minds. They are definitely not chemical imbalance in your brain due to some nebulous chemical reactions by chance. Your negative emotions are the symptoms of the painful experiences that you have which are not healed, and which are still affecting you. The effects of these painful experiences are exacerbated by the pressures or difficulties of the other problems in your life. For instance, let's say you are already carrying a huge load on your back, then you cannot take on much more, but, let's say something else happens to you, such as the difficulties from the Pandemic, then the resultant combined weight on you can take you over the edge, kind of like the straw that break the camel's back. When this happens, people's attention usually goes to the straw that was added, but actually the majority of the weight had come from the huge load that were already there, holding a person down and causing a person issues. So how do you remove the huge load that was already there? How do you lighten them up? Is it possible to get rid of them? That is what this meeting will be all about. Come to our Meetup, where we can introduce you to some of the knowledge, tools and techniques of the breakthroughs in the field of the mind that we can apply to this ever important area of life. Be sure to click on the red "Attend" button below to come to this local event. We look forward to seeing you there. This group is created by the Dianetics and Scientology Life Improvement Center of Central Ohio.
