Photographic Nature Walk in Whippendell Woods with bluebells
Take a guided walk from Cassiobury Park to Whippendell Woods, led by Andrew Lalchan (a local photographer), to explore spring flowers and bluebells.
This walk offers opportunities to take photos of nature, and Andrew will be on hand to provide advice. There should be plenty of wildlife and bluebells in mid-spring!
As it's likely to be muddy, strong footwear is needed.
Bring your mobile phone or DSLR camera with a zoom/macro/wide-angle lens.
We will meet at Cassiobury Park Hub near the paddling pool. There is also free car parking in the park; follow the instructions on the signs.
If you are coming from Watford Metropolitan tube station, it's a short walk to the park (5 - 10 minutes).
Suitable for beginners and advanced photographers alike.

Greenwich Film Club - April - 'The Drama' by A24
Join us for the first meeting of the Greenwich Film Club!
We've chosen The Drama as our first movie. It's released on 3rd April so hopefully sufficient time to discuss it on the 15th April.
Watch the movie in your own time, ahead of the meetup. Then we'll meet up at 7pm at The Mitre pub in Greenwich on Wednesday 15th April to discuss the movie!
Once the group has settled a bit - for future months, we'll probs organise an optional cinema trip to see the movie as a group at the Greenwich Picturehouse.
Everyone welcome!
Film Club: Choice, Chance, Repeat (Secret Film)
**This month:** A young woman has just minutes to solve a life-or-death problem, and what follows is a series of near-identical attempts, each unfolding differently with every tiny decision, delay, and encounter. As the same situation restarts and reshapes itself, we’re drawn into a vivid exploration of choice: how much control we really have, how chance intervenes, and whether changing a single moment can alter everything that follows. Is it better to choose faster, choose smarter, or are we always at the mercy of forces beyond us? **Can you guess the film? Or come and find out on the night!**
This year’s films all revolve around the theme of “**choice**” – plenty of opportunity for philosophical exploration!
PFA Film Club hosts free screenings of thought-provoking films, followed by a discussion about the raised philosophical issues, for general public. In 2026 meetings are held every third WEDNESDAY of the month at the Cafe of St. Hilda's East Community Centre, 18 Club Row, London E2 7EY. The nearest station is **Shoreditch High Street** on the Overground. The screening starts at 6:30 pm (or at 6pm for longer films) and we need to vacate the building by 9:00pm. We offer complimentary light refreshments during the event.
For the most up-to-date schedule of the upcoming film club events, visit our [website](http://pfalondon.org/#rec767601373).

Haroun and the Sea of Stories - Salman Rushdie [In-person Meeting]
**This event is supported by The Royal Institute of Philosophy’s [Local Partners Programme](https://royalinstitutephilosophy.org/news/fund-your-event/).**
**N.B. this meeting will be held in person in the Prince of Wales pub near Covent Garden. There is also an online session held on Thursday if you are not in London or are not able to attend in-person.**
Our 'Quest' theme returns to the magical and otherworldly. Our second 'children's story' of the year that is also a collection of myths, fairy stories and a reflection on the immense power of stories - this one written at a particular pivotal point in the author's life. We will take a fantastical journey with Haroun and his father Rashid, who was once a great storyteller, as they try to recover his lost powers.
The meeting starts at 7pm with drink breaks at 8 and 9. The discussion will end around 10pm, but leave whenever you need to.
Here's the blurb from goodreads.com
Set in an exotic Eastern landscape peopled by magicians and fantastic talking animals, Salman Rushdie's classic children's novel *Haroun and the Sea of Stories* inhabits the same imaginative space as *Gulliver's Travels, Alice in Wonderland,* and *The Wizard of Oz*. In this captivating novel, Haroun sets out on an adventure to restore the poisoned source of the sea of stories. On the way, he encounters many foes, all intent on draining the sea of all its storytelling powers.
**Our confirmed 2026 books are:**
* January - The Wizard of Earthsea, Ursula K. Le Guin
* February - The Old Man and the Sea, Ernest Hemingway
* March - The Bell, Iris Murdoch
* April - Haroun and Sea of Stories, Salman Rushdie
* May - Journey to the West/Monkey - Weng Cheng-En
* June - The Odyssey, Homer

Drunken
This month's prompt concerns the idea of the “warrior philosopher” (seemed appropriate in these times)--that is someone whose understanding of violence, power, and justice is forged through direct experience of war. We are looking at Major General Smedley D. Butler, a highly decorated U.S. Marine raised in a Quaker (pacifist) tradition who later became a prominent critic of American militarism (there is a wonderful biography of Gen. Butler called "Gangsters of Capitalism")
Butler's argument in *War Is a Racket* (1935): that many U.S. interventions were driven less by national defense than by corporate and financial interests, with Butler portraying himself as an enforcer for business and Wall Street. We can consider the moral ambiguity of his insider critique—whether complicity strengthens or undermines credibility and also consider some of the concrete reforms he proposed (e.g., “conscript” capital before soldiers, restrict the military to coastal defense, and have only those who fight decide on war).
Butler’s life arc clearly changed from pacifist upbringing to warrior to antiwar crusader—and asks whether true understanding of peace requires firsthand knowledge of war, and what that implies about the cost of suffering. So do we need to suffer to understand suffering? Do we have to experience war to appreciate peace? As one more question: in the movie "A Few Good Men" Jack Nicholson's character says that "you have the luxury of not knowing what I know" so do most of us go through life oblivious to real violence and suffering? See you at Drunken Philosophy!
