Announcing a new Meetup for The Fort Myers Area Kayaking Group!

What: Ozello Adventure Race

When: April 24,[masked]:00 AM

Pirates Cove Boat Ramp
410 N. Pirate Point
Crystal River, FL 34429

It's time again to head north and enjoy the beauty of that area! I know some of you are not just kayakers but enjoy biking and running. So here's a great chance to do all of them with a competitive spirit. This is an adventure competition with individual or teams of 2 or 3. Kayak 1.5 miles, bike 7 miles, and run 2 miles. You can do all of them yourself or get your friends to take one or two of the events. Click on the link below for info and pictures. This is sponsored by the Kiwanis Club and proceeds help provide scholarships for kids hoping to attend college. You can also just come up and watch, paddle around the area, and not bother to race...lots of other things to do. It is well worth the drive and a weekend to explore this part of the state. I keep going back......

Where in the world is Ozello you're asking? smile Ozello is a little town between Homosassa Springs and Crystal River, north of Tampa about 60 miles. It's a little over a three hour drive from Fort Myers.
This would also be a great time to paddle the other local rivers, like the Weechi Wachee and Chassahowitzka. There is also the Withlacoochee Rails to Trails bike path that is close by which is outstanding. You can come up for a day or stay for more.
Accommodations would be on your own but I can recommend a few places. I am staying at the Plantation Inn.

Others you can try:

If you want to camp, here's a place I know is on the water but their tent spaces are not.
http://www.hikercentr... (may have cabin rentals)
http://www.bocc.citru... (This is a very nice place and you can launch right from there.)

There are many other places in the area so do a search for lodging in Crystal River, Homossassa, or Homossassa Springs.

If there is interest, I can plan other local paddles and bike rides in that area.
