All levels are welcome. In this class, we will focus on figure drawing and various drawing techniques. We begin with a short discussion/demo of different approaches to drawing. There is a live model for each session. Please bring a pad up to 18×24, a 2H, HB, and 4B pencil, and an eraser. **[If you don't know what to bring we recommend the following supplies](https://amzn.to/47VCpaE)**. This uninstructed session begins with short poses for attendees to warm up. The longest poses are 20 minutes. We take a 5-minute break every 20 minutes. There are cookies and fresh water available. We listen to music while we work. Please bring your supplies (we have limited supplies to lend out). Looking forward to seeing you! PLEASE NOTE: * We can not accommodate dry pastels (for health reasons), open ink containers, or paint other than watercolor. * Latecomers will be seated at the discretion of the moderator to prevent disruption to other artists. * Because of the limited space, we can not offer any refunds for the session. *Drawing Is A Drag* is our newest opportunity to express yourself and hone your artistic skills. This art night is a bold, creative figure-drawing experience featuring live drag artist models. Celebrate art, expression, and queerness in every other month. No artistic training required. This month’s model is the fabulous Drag King Benedict! This fabulous event is for ages 21+.

4 PM - 6 PM Drawing Event for this group at the Hugh!! This is the second one, first one has a couple folks and was pretty nice! Lets see if we can get a better turn out this time! Portrait Drawing (Drop-in)

In these drop-in portrait drawing sessions, students will spend a Saturday learning the fundamentals of portrait drawing with direct access to a professional, classically trained artist for hands-on instruction and feedback. Katya Dennison is an award-winning, classically trained artist. She will walk through the principles of beginning a portrait, followed by basic form rendering. These sessions focus on anatomy, structure, likeness, and precision of materials — giving students the tools to create a confident drawing with visual expression.

This course is designed for beginners! **3 Sessions - Mondays August 10, 17, and 24, 6:30-9:30pm** Learn how to draw the human figure with Gaby Nighan, a classically trained artist. Gaby will guide you through every step of a drawing, starting with gesture and proportion on the first session and finishing with shading on later sessions. Gaby will break down the complex process of figure drawing into simple, concrete steps. You will gain knowledge to help you become self-sufficient in your drawings. You will leave with a drawing you’re proud of! Live demo and individual critiques from the instructor included in each session. **Materials List:** 9 x 12” , 11 x 17 “ or 18 x 24 “ paper (I recommend Strathmore 400 series) 2H, H, and HB pencils (I recommend Staedler brand) Kneaded eraser Tombow mono eraser (this is an eraser with a fine point that helps with specificity. Introduction to Figure Painting (4 Sessions)

One of the most common difficulties for beginning and intermediate painters is finishing a painting. Starting a painting is simple enough, but understanding how to organize that start into a coherent, finished illusion of reality is the most difficult aspect of naturalistic painting. This class will teach you a step by step procedure to methodically navigate through a full figure painting. We start with a precise line drawing, then transfer it to a toned canvas, and lastly finish part by part, moving top to bottom in a process referred to as “window shading” by the 19th century masters. Having some familiarity with life drawing is recommended as a prerequisite for this class, although you don’t need to have painted before. **Week 1:** Drawing & Transferring **Week 2:** Color Mixing & Portrait Painting **Week 3:** Rendering the Torso & Arms **Week 4:** Finishing the Lower Body **Materials:** ***paints, brushes, medium(oil, terps) included*** * 18x24 inch canvas * 18x24 inch sheet of paper * 2b graphite pencil * medium vine charcoal * kneaded eraser * variety of sizes of hog bristle filbert brushes * variety of sizes of synthetic or sable filbert brushes and one small round brush * paper towels * linseed oil * medium cup * brush cleaning soap (I use a bar of regular ivory soap) * oil paint (I use all Gamblin professional grade and I'm not picky about the exact colors but I use Titanium White, Cadmium Yellow Light, Cadmium Red Light, Burnt Sienna, Ultramarine Blue, and Ivory Black). * raw umber acrylic paint **About the Instructor: *Aidan Barker-Hill*** Aidan Barker-Hill is a figurative oil painter from Reno, Nevada. He earned his BFA from Laguna College of Art and Design in 2012 and his MFA from the New York Academy of Art in 2018. His work takes great influence from the academic painters of the 19th century, repurposing their techniques to make pictures about masculinity, relationships, and how the two interact. He’s received the Elizabeth Greenshields Grant and the Leipzig International Art Program residency. He lives and works in Brooklyn has exhibited with Monti8 in Rome and Arcadia Contemporary in New York City.

In each 3-hr session, we will draw from a live model, beginning with quick poses to warm up, and then gradually extend the pose length to a final 1 hour pose to finish the evening. First timers welcome. All levels of experience and skill are invited. This is an uninstructed event is for anyone who enjoys or is curious about drawing from a nude figure model. Do your own thing. The environment is laid back, yet professional, and we want everyone to enjoy themselves. No photography allowed. Bring your own beverages. Great tunes will be played, great models will be hired, and we'll make some fantastic artwork. These sessions are moderated by David Bell and Joe Scarpulla, who run Big Object animation studio. David and Joe are stop-motion animators and visual artists, and David is an instructor at Parsons and SVA. RATES 3-hr session: $20 cash / $25 venmo Please RSVP. We operate on a first come-first serve basis. WHAT TO BRING: Your drawing/painting materials (no oils), $20, BYOB. Directions: We are a few blocks from the Greenpoint station on the G and from the Greenpoint stop on the East River Ferry.
