Pianist Inna Faliks opens the season with *Breaking Screens*, joined by cellist Ani Aznavoorian and London-based composer, performer, and DJ Gabriel Prokofiev. Piano and cello meet Prokofiev's electronic soundscapes in music by Prokofiev, Lera Auerbach, and Claude Debussy, alongside poetry from the community. Founded by Faliks in New York, *Music/Words* is a platform for artists working where music and text meet. This Los Angeles residency at the Wende builds each program around close listening and live collaboration. **Inna Faliks** is Head of Piano and Professor of Piano at the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music and author of *Weight in the Fingertips: A Musical Odyssey from Soviet Ukraine to the World Stage*. *The garden side gate will open 30 minutes before the start time and is available for ADA access and check-in. In the Soviet Union that made him a dissident. In 1974 Rabin helped organize an open-air show of unofficial art in Moscow. The authorities broke it up with bulldozers and water cannons. Images of the attack went around the world, and within weeks officials had to allow a second outdoor show. Thousands came. Several years later Rabin and his wife, the painter Valentina Kropivnitskaya, were forced into exile, and he was stripped of his Soviet citizenship. They started over in France. *A Road of Many Colors* tells their story in two documentaries written and directed by Alexander Smoljanski and Evgeny Tsymbal. *In Search of a Lost Paradise* (2015, 52 minutes) follows the life and art of Kropivnitskaya. *Oscar* (2018, 90 minutes) turns to Rabin. It draws on archival footage, some of it shown publicly for the first time, and on conversations with artists and writers including Ilya Kabakov, Vitaly Komar, Eric Bulatov, Lyudmila Ulitskaya, Vladimir Sorokin, and Vladimir Paperny. Rabin died in 2018 at 90, shortly after the Paris premiere of *Oscar*. The films ask what art can do when power demands obedience, a question artists, writers, and cultural institutions face again today. Alexander Smoljanski joins us for a conversation after the screening. Smoljanski is a writer, director, and producer who conceived *A Road of Many Colors* and made both films with Evgeny Tsymbal. Hi all! The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art is opening this month and I am going to visit opening week. I would like to go back again on Sunday November 1st at 11:30am as a group. Its four sections, Astronomy, the Space Race, Futurisms, and Aliens, bring together artists from the East, the West, and the Global South and trace how they responded to advances in space science and technology and connected these discoveries to their own cultural contexts. The exhibition combines historical artifacts, including a full-scale model of Sputnik-1, an original meteorite, and cosmos-themed sculptures, with contemporary and Cold War-era artwork inspired by the cosmos. Happy Hour: Low Doors, Deep Rooms - Artist Panel Discussion

Cartoons, murals and public art let us in fast. A bright color, a clean line, a shape we half-remembered, a wall we always walk by, a sculpture in the lobbyway of our office building, outside a stadium, in a park. In all of these forms, we are given access before we have decided whether we want it or how we want to engage it. And these forms can hold almost anything: humor, grief, violence, the personal and the political at once. This Happy Hour brings the artists from the current exhibition, Cast Shadows, together with other artists working with accessible art forms into conversation with the CXLA community to ask what access really means, for contemporary art, for public art, for the cartoon and the caricature, and for difficult content that needs a way in. *Participating Artists: David Vega, Andy Montiel-Phillips, Coco Pusinella, Nehemiah Cisneros* *Homemade Cocktail Mixer - Frannie* *Facilitator - Frannie Hemmelgarn & Kim Garcia* **About Happy Hour** Happy Hour is Currency Exchange's ongoing series of public conversations, held around the exhibition currently on view. The format is deliberately loose: a drink, a few starting questions, and room for the discussion to go where it needs to.
