Monthly South Melbourne Beach Patrol beach clean-up

Join us for one hour of beach cleaning, socialising, and generally being a good person. It's a perfect time to head down to clean up the beaches that you love. Meeting Spot: Kerferd Rd Pier When: Every third Saturday, 9am - 10am Please arrive 850am for a 9am start! Bags provided. Please bring your own gloves if you like. Feel free to invite neighbours/family/friends/colleagues, etc to join in and lend a hand as we tidy up our beaches and bay!! 3205 Beach Patrol is a group that meets for One Hour each month to clear rubbish from South Melbourne Beach. Totally voluntary, totally optional, totally local. We meet every THIRD Saturday, same place, same time. Beach Patrol is a chain of volunteer community groups each defined by suburb, post code and t-shirt colour. Starting in 2009, by mid-2015 there were 18 groups running, covering over 50 km of beach across the top of Melbourne's Port Phillip Bay with approx. 1500 volunteers signed up to help keep our beaches clean.

Tops, Middles, and a Pile of Cats

In a 40-minute simulation, Elle was handed a company: three managers, eight workers, one absurd mission: draw as many good cat stick figures as possible. She went in wanting a flat, humane, consultative culture. Within minutes, she was issuing orders, following rules she had the power to change, accidentally making her managers invisible, and feeling strangely alone in her "office." None of it was a personal failing. It was the system doing what systems do, and it's been documented for decades. This talk uses the wreckage (and the surprisingly tender moments) of a simulated company to explore why our positions shape us more than our intentions do, why "just have fun" can raise anxiety instead of lowering it, and what it actually takes to hold steady for a team under pressure. You don't need a title for any of this to be true of you. The system was shaping her, and it's probably also shaping you. This night is for people who feel that fear and want to build the courage to act before they have all the answers. **Volunteers get 1-4 minutes to talk on wacky topics:** * Pitching a slide deck they have never seen before * Taking questions from the audience on a topic they know nothing about * Being handed a random object from the office and explaining your "revoulutionary discovery" * Explaining a graph that has no numbers or legend * *More "fun" and chaotic games to come...* **Spectators get front row seats to:** * Brave attempts and clever recoveries * Watch brilliance appear under pressure * The exact moment someone realises they are more capable than they thought * And...comedy gold! 🎲 **How the night works** Some people will step up. Some people will sit back and enjoy the show. Both are welcome. You don’t have to participate but most people end up tempted as the night goes on. We’ll rotate through a variety of short games across the evening.
