Harz Day Trip: Devil's Wall and Witches Mountain

*Journey to the Harz Mountain region, hike along some of the most impressive rock formations, and walk through the magical woodlands, which, according to mythology, are the home of witches and the devil.* Hike Distance: 10km Difficulty: Intermediate Discover the magic of the Bodetal Valley and magical Hexentanzplatz Join a bunch of like-minded hikers and join this legendary trail that takes you straight into the heart of the Harz Mountains. Taking the direct Harz Express train from Berlin, the hike climbs the picturesque town of Thale up to the famous Hexentanzplatz (the "Witches' Dance Floor"). Perched on a dramatic rocky plateau about 454 meters above sea level, this route treats you to some of the most striking gorge scenery in northern Europe. As you leave the town behind, you'll walk alongside the rushing waters of the Bode River before beginning your ascent into the deep, rugged granite ravines of the Bodetal nature reserve. The terrain offers an immersive and moderately challenging trek, winding upward through dense, ancient forests of beech and oak. The paths are well-established but can become uneven and rocky, rewarding your physical effort with stunning lookout points along the way. From these clearings, you'll get breathtaking panoramic views of the sheer cliff faces, the green thickets blanketing the valley floor, and the imposing Rosstrappe cliff rising directly across the gorge. Beyond the natural beauty, this hike is steeped in German folklore and cultural history. The Hexentanzplatz itself is famously known as an old Saxon cult site and the legendary gathering place for witches on Walpurgis Night (the eve of May 1st), a tradition that heavily inspired Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s masterpiece, Faust. Once you reach the top, the mystical atmosphere is brought to life by iconic metal sculptures of witches and devils, the historic Walpurgis Hall museum, and an open-air mountain theater, making the summit just as captivating as the journey up. After the hike, take the cable car down to the valley below, and enjoy a wonderful setting of the entire Harz. Outdoor – Circular route around the Spring- and Glubigsee near Wendisch-Rietz

On this varied circular hike, we’ll explore a chain of elongated lakes in the Behrensdorfer Heide. The quiet and, at times, very secluded trail follows the wooded shores of Lake Springsee and Lake Großer Glubigsee, for much of the route, offering beautiful views of the surrounding nature. Along the way, we’ll also pass through an interesting wet woodland area, a valuable ecosystem that plays an important role in climate protection and nature conservation. And if the weather is on our side, the many lakeside bathing spots invite us to enjoy a refreshing swim or simply relax by the water. As there are no guaranteed places to stop for food or drinks along the route, please bring enough food and water for the day. Since we’ll be walking through woodland and wetland areas, it’s also a good idea to bring an effective insect repellent. **What’s Village Outdoor?** Village outdoor Events are monthly meetups for the we are village community and their friends to enjoy outdoor activities in and around Berlin. That’s the Zugspitze, and mid-June is the time to experience it. The snow has been nearly melted and the alpine meadows are bursting with wildflowers. Here’s the thing—this hike isn’t something just anyone can do. All the spots at the iconic **Knorr Hut** have been booked solid for months, but I’ve got us covered. I secured these places well in advance so that you can enjoy this incredible route at the best possible time! **WHAT IS THE PLAN?** * **Day 0 - Meet & Greet:** Relaxed day – we all meet at the hotel in the evening, having late evening dinner, preparing ourselves for next day’s adventures. * **Day 1 (Distance – 20 km)** – Today post breakfast, we would start our journey to hut. The hike itself would go through the Reintal valley. During the hike we would pass the impressive Partnachklamm gorge, the secluded Reintal valley, the Reintalangerhütte and at the evening would approach Knorrhütte. It is possible to have a nice lunch there, at their restaurant, So, you do not need to carry on food with you. During the day we would gain around 1400 meters. * **Day 2 (Hike distance <10 km)** – After the early breakfast at the hut, we would start our hike to summit. Although it is quite short, we would gain another 870 meters to reach the summit at around mid-day. After relaxing at the top and enjoying the pristine beauty of the majestic and mighty mountains, we will use the cable car to go down to the city. This hike follows sandy woodland trails and quiet paths along the Havel River, gradually climbing through the forest to reach some of Berlin’s best vantage points. We’ll climb the steps of the historic Grunewaldturm before stopping for a relaxed break at Kaisergarten am Grunewaldturm, a traditional beer garden overlooking the river. From there, we continue through the forest and up to the summit of Drachenberg, where wide views open out across the Grunewald and the distant Berlin skyline. It’s a chance to leave the busy streets behind, enjoy some fresh forest air, and spend the day exploring one of Berlin’s most beautiful landscapes with a group of curious explorers. **WHAT ARE SOME OF THE HIGHLIGHTS?** **Grunewald:** Berlin’s largest forest, filled with sandy trails, glacial hills, and quiet lakes. A favourite escape for those looking for nature just outside the city. **Havel River:** One of the major rivers of the Berlin-Brandenburg region. Here the river widens into large lakes and peaceful bays surrounded by forest. **Grunewaldturm:** Built in 1899, this historic observation tower rises above the forest overlooking the Havel. Climb the steps to enjoy wide views over the lakes, woodland, and the distant Berlin skyline. **Kaisergarten am Grunewaldturm:** A classic German beer garden beside the tower. With views across the river, it’s the perfect place for a relaxed break, a drink, or a snack. **Drachenberg:** One of Berlin’s best viewpoints. Explore one of Dresden's best wine terraces, hiking from winery to winery. Take a day trip to Dresden's most beautiful wine terrace, facing out across the Elbe visiting palaces, walking through vineyards, and tasting some of the best local wines. Hike Distance: 10km Difficulty: Intermediate Visit the historic and beautiful district of Pilitz, on the outskirts of Dresden. The day’s adventure will combine hiking through vineyards, visiting spectacular palaces and wine terraces, while enjoying views across the magnificent Elbe. The tour of Pilnitz will take you through the old palace and gardens, before journeying along the region's famed Saxon Wine Route. Along the way, we'll visit multiple wineries, enjoying wine and cake along the river, before visiting the award-winning Weingut Klaus Zimmerling. The hike is a casual 10km trek, with steep inclines and stunning views. This is a trip for anyone who loves nature and adores wine.
