Utilitarianism of Giving
Sat, Sep 19, 8:00 PMThe 19th Century philosopher and political economist John Stuart Mills championed the Utilitarian Principle - the principle of the Greatest Good for the Most people. We as moral agents should act in the world with the aim of increasing general happiness while reducing unnecessary pain and suffering in the world. Many will agree with this sentiment on first hearing it but on further consideration, will prompt several big questions: A) Who matters? B) How should we help them? C) And how much? We will examine some modern projects that attempt to answer these questions. \-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\- This event is part of the NYC Philosophy & Psychology Readers Conference 2026. Thu, Oct 15, 3:45 PMHosts: Yen & Bill. Give blood & go out for lunch afterward - "One pint of blood can save 3 lives. Bring a friend & save 6 lives." The #1 reason people don't donate is they were never asked. * Did you know that platelets support blood clotting and give those with leukemia and other cancers a chance to live? * Did you know that blood loss victims of car accidents may need transfusions of 50 pints or more of red blood cells? * More than 25% of the blood supply is used by cancer patients. Every week, more than 75,000 blood donations and 1,700 donated platelet units are needed to meet patient need. To ensure we are prepared to support health agencies in our communities and across the country, NYBCe strongly urges individuals who feel healthy and well to make an appointment at a donor center or find a new community blood drive. Helping the homeless to get off the streets this winter
Sat, Aug 22, 11:00 PMHello all, https://bowery.volunteerhub.com/vv2/ I was extremely saddened by this weekend's brutal killing of 4 homeless people in lower manhattan. I have contacted the Bowery mission to help and see what we can do as a community to provide food and shelter for the homeless. This is an endless effort. I encourage you all to helpout whenever, and whatever you have to get them off the streets, and to clean up the shelter and talk to the government to get programs incentives to allow landlords to use up their vacant space, even if its a few months for the winter. Many of you do not know that homeless people choose to be outside, because they don't feel safe in shelters. Or because of their illness that they do not want contact with people or helping themselves. Bowery mission helps manhattan folks - with shelter/ food/ clothing. Please help 1 at a time. IF you have other resourses to share or events to share, Please POST! Thanks all. Lisa, Thank you for reaching out. We were also stunned and heartbroken by this horrific attack. I truly admire the work that you do—I think the events of this weekend present a call for all of NYC’s nonprofits that deal with homelessness and its tangential issues to work together and form a unified front, so I am grateful for your interest and passion. I encourage you to check out our volunteer site and please reach out with any questions or if this is not what you are looking for. If you are looking for something more specific, I’m happy to jump on a call. Let me know what makes the most sense. Thank you—hope you had a nice weekend.
