From Saturday Morning Folklore Club

**Saddle up, astrology followers, itโ€™s Lunar New Year 2026 and weโ€™re galloping into the year of the horse!** Chinese New Year, also known as Lunar New Year, Spring Festival, Tet, and Seollal, falls between late January and mid February, and this folklore extravaganza is celebrated annually in Londonโ€™s West End. This year weโ€™ll be leaving behind the year of the snake and ushering in the horse, which symbolises success and victory (about time!). The festival is also celebrated in Korea, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore, Taiwan, Malaysia and the Philippines, as well in many diaspora communities around the globe, and the biggest celebration in the world outside of Asia is right here in Londonโ€™s Chinatown. It features Europeโ€™s largest gathering of the famous Chinese lion and dragon performers, as well as a parade, colourful floats, music, dancing and special snacks for sale. (Warm custard taiyaki, anyone?) Parade route and timing details are yet to be announced so check back here closer to the time for confirmed info! (This is a free event, so we ask that you please keep RSVPs updated to ensure that as many people as possible who want to come are able to. Cancellations with less than three daysโ€™ notice may be removed from the group to prevent wasted spaces in future. Many thanks for your understanding!)

Documentaryโ€”Films by Ebrahim Golestan

Documentaryโ€”Films by Ebrahim Golestan

Tue, Feb 24, 6:30 PM
From Persian Culture
4.9

# Three classics from the golden age of the Iranian documentary movement. Films by **Ebrahim Golestan** explore the relationship between earth, people, and the cycle of life in a uniquely poetic manner. *A Fire*, part of his โ€˜industrial documentariesโ€™ (made early in his career whilst working for oil companies) was **Golestanโ€™s** first major international breakthrough. It depicts the extraordinary effort to extinguish a major oilfield fire, combining dramatic immediacy with a poetic sensibility. *The Hills of Marlik* appears to be about the excavation of an archaeological site, but the unearthed objects become a lens through which 3,000 years of Iranian history are seen. **Shirdelโ€™s** *The Night It Rained* follows a newspaper report of a village boy who supposedly saves passengers on a train, an account that is quickly doubted and challenged. In just thirty minutes, **Shirdel** offers a masterful, incisive portrait of 1960s Iran. Tickets are selling fast!
