SOLD OUT • ST PANCRAS • S2E3: LOVE III | Thought Experiments in Pubs
This episode will explore various ideas associated with 'LOVE'. There are so many ideas to explore, in fact, that this is our third time tackling the topic. We will explore it by way of three \*new\* thought experiments, which I will post in the comments on the day. Join us for thought provoking conversations at the beautiful Betjeman Arms! Spaces are limited, so get your ticket early if you want to be there 😊 **THOUGHT EXPERIMENTS** \- announced on the day of the event **[WHATSAPP GROUP](https://chat.whatsapp.com/DapwAXpnOHO5DRYThobpe4)** \- stay in the loop **[INSTAGRAM](https://www.instagram.com/thoughtexperimentsinpubs/)** \- see what we look like \(including The People of TEiP project\) **[SUBSTACK](https://experimentsingroupwisdom.substack.com/)** \- sign up for the newsletter **The idea:** A chance to meet and talk meaningfully about thought provoking topics. **How we'll do it** (timings approximate): * 7:00pm - Arrive at The Betjeman Arms. You can access the pub either from the street (entrance to the right of The St Pancras Hotel entrance) or via St Pancras Station (entrance from the upstairs train platforms). We'll be in the private dining room - ask at the bar if you can't find us. * Organise ourselves into small groups (3-6ish - apparently 4 is the best number for a good conversation!) * Have a look at the **thought experiments** (announced on the day of the event) * 7:15 - First rotation begins - Talk about the first thought experiment, but feel free to veer off topic. * 7:35 - Optional reshuffle: swap groups, move on to the second thought experiment. * 8:00 - Optional reshuffle: swap groups, move on to the third thought experiment. * 8:25pm - Wrap up - hear about upcoming events, feedback/requests for future meetups. * 8:30 Meetup ‘ends’. But feel free to carry on conversations. We have the room until 10pm and usually a lot of us stay until then :-) **Notes on the general atmosphere**: * The vibe is to let conversation flow rather than stick strictly to one topic. * While we'd like to talk about 'meaningful things', we also see the value in lighter topics, so don't worry about not being 'deep' enough! * Feel free to suggest ideas for future Thought Experiments in Pubs meetup groups, both in terms of structure and topics to discuss. **Where we'll meet**: This group will be at The Betjeman Arms. The nearest Tube station is King's Cross St. Pancras. You can access the pub either from the street (entrance to the right of The St Pancras Hotel entrance) or via St Pancras Station (entrance from the upstairs train platforms). We'll be in the private dining room - ask at the bar if you can't find us. **Who should come**: Everyone! We believe that the more perspectives, the richer the conversation. This group is not about being experts in Philosophy, it is about *doing* philosophy. That is, bringing our various life experiences and lenses on the world to group discussions about the human experience, the nature of reality... etc.... I'm so looking forward to meeting & talking with you in this beautiful location :-) If you would like to further support me & these meetups, you can do so here: [https://buymeacoffee.com/bonnyastor](https://buymeacoffee.com/bonnyastor) Thank you!

Here's what some of our other students have to say about our classes: Dean "I started Bushin a few months ago. Having done martial arts for 5 years in another art, I was open to new ideas of what may come with this one. I am thrilled to say it has been fantastic. My instructor Stephen is a legend, he knows what he's talking about and has a no bs way of getting to a point. He is a lover of martial arts and it shows. His enthusiasm rubs off onto myself and the other students which creates a great learning environment. This art is marvellous, the group is a humble yet enthusiastic class of students coming to learn. I felt like I was part of the group the moment I joined. Higher belted student don't have an ego and are happy to help and train along side anyone in the class. Joining Bushin has been a tremendous experience." Konrad "Great place to learn self-defence . Coach with a passion to MMA show you how to react and defend yourself" Penny "I was completely new to martial arts so I didn't really know what I wanted to learn but I love the way they teach a mixture of martial arts and have a set syllabus. I felt like I was learning boxing, Kickboxing, jujitsu and self defence all in the same class which was great value for money!" Elizabeth "Great class for beginners and those with experience. Stephen is so welcoming and has been great at helping me find equipment and modify exercises to help with my mobility issues! Really recommend for anyone wanting to try martial arts or get fit in a friendly atmosphere :)" Lucia "I joined Bushin after a friend of mine was attacked in London and I thought it was a good idea to learn how to defend myself in case something like that happened to me as well. I didn't have any previous experience of self defense or fighting and I thought that this would hold me back, but it was definitely not the case: people in Bushin are so welcoming and nice to each other, always ready to help - it's truly a place for every level, from beginner to black belt. It's much more than a self defense class, it's real street fighting and a super good workout as well , but most importantly, it's great fun! I highly recommend it" Check out these and our other reviews for yourself!: [Club Reviews](https://maps.app.goo.gl/Gm9DV2xyYun55UqS8) And most importantly BOOK YOUR FREE TRIAL TODAY! Melancholia (2011)
Melancholia (2011)
Melancholia tells the story of two sisters, who meet each other again as one of them gets married in a castle. The family gathering is fraught, bringing up old scars, which the women have to navigate. All the while, a distant star turns out to be a planet (or, at least, a planet-sized metaphor) that threatens to destroy the world as it hurtles towards Earth. This was perhaps Lars Von Trier's high water mark in mainstream cinema\*, a visually spellbinding meditation on depression, loneliness and familial bonds that somehow manages to mix in apocalyptic elements. Kirsten Dunst gives probably her best ever performance in the lead, heading a cast that includes regular Von Trier players Charlotte Gainsbourg, John Hurt, Udo Kier and Stellan Skarsgard alongside his brother Alexander, Charlotte Rampling and Kiefer Sutherland. It also has one of the most beautiful movie posters ever, don't you think? Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wzD0U841LRM Tickets here: https://www.ticketsource.co.uk/close-up-cinema/e-kqezzg This is showing at Shoreditch's classy Close-Up cinema, so let's meet at half seven for a pre-drink somewhere on Brick Lane and head in afterwards. \*He'd follow it up with Nymphomanic, which was filled with explicit sex and had to be edited *down* to four hours, and then The House That Jack Built, a film that manages to be both morally loathsome and crap at the same time. Neither is currently on the Alt/Cult viewing schedule.
Film Club: A House Divided (Secret Film)
Film Club: A House Divided (Secret Film)
**This month:** A married couple’s decision to separate sets off a chain of events that entangles family duty, truth-telling, class tension, religious conscience, and the fragile trust between strangers. As each person struggles to act rightly within constraints they did not choose, conflicting accounts and partial truths emerge, leaving us unsure not only what happened, but what justice would require. This quietly gripping drama invites us to ask: when responsibilities collide, is there such a thing as a clean moral choice, or only degrees of harm we must learn to live with? **Can you guess the film?** Or come and find out on the day! This year’s films all revolve around the theme of “**choice**” – plenty of opportunity for philosophical exploration! PFA Film Club hosts free screenings of thought-provoking films, followed by a discussion about the raised philosophical issues, for general public. In 2026 meetings are held every third WEDNESDAY of the month at the Cafe of St. Hilda's East Community Centre, 18 Club Row, London E2 7EY. The nearest station is **Shoreditch High Street** on the Overground. The screening starts at 6:30 pm (or at **6pm for longer films**) and we need to vacate the building by 9:00pm. We offer complimentary light refreshments during the event. For the most up-to-date schedule of the upcoming film club events, visit our [website](http://pfalondon.org/#rec767601373). Film Club events are currently supported by The Royal Institute of Philosophy's [Local Partners Programme](https://royalinstitutephilosophy.org/news/fund-your-event/) and JAG ([Jago Action Group](https://jagoactiongroup.wordpress.com/))

SOLD OUT • TEiP DEEP: A small group, deep dive into a single Thought Experiment
A **smaller, quieter, and less rushed** edition of THOUGHT EXPERIMENTS IN PUBS. At TEiP DEEP, we have the chance to spend a whole hour and a half on **one thought experiment**, exploring different perspectives, coming up with new questions, listening and learning from one another. **How it works:** \- We split into small groups for each chapter of the thought experiment \(3\-4\)\. \- We shuffle every 25 mins to meet new people and change things up\. \- And at the end we'll have a brief group reflection\, sharing ideas and insights \- this will be lightly facilitated to ensure that everyone has a chance to speak if they want to \(no pressure\)\. Some simple ground rules to keep our conversation the best it can be: * respect for one another’s perspectives, beliefs, time (etc.) * confidentiality of personal stories * own your perspective * you don’t have to talk if you don’t want to. Our aim is the same as our bigger Thought Experiments in Pubs meetups: **a chance to meet and talk at about meaningful, thought provoking things**. Although we’ll be going a bit ‘deeper’, we’ll keep the intention to have an enjoyable evening, with good humour and fun. Places are limited to 15-20 people and tickets are £5. Please update your RSVP if you can no longer attend so that someone else can have your place. **Who should come:** Everyone! We believe that the more perspectives, the richer the conversation. This group is not about being experts in Philosophy, it is about *doing* philosophy. Cine: Se permuta (House of Swap) - Cuba
Cine: Se permuta (House of Swap) - Cuba
La película empieza a las 16.20 no hay publicidad ni trailers de otras películas antes. Después de la película nos tomaremos algo para compartir nuestras impresiones. Screened in partnership with [Screen Cuba](https://www.thegardencinema.co.uk/partner/screen-cuba/) Juan Carlos Tabío, Cuba, 1983, 103m. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with special guests from Cuba, distinguished cinema actors Mirtha Ibarra and Eslinda Núñez. This film heralded a new genre of sociocritical comedy in Cuba and was the debut feature of director Juan Carlos Tabio. It is full of Cubanisms – popular everyday problems, language and attitudes of that era and a range of characters from an idealist architect to an opportunistic bureaucrat. Gloria wants her adult daughter to find a husband she considers a “good match” and engineers a chain of house swaps to move to a “better neighbourhood” to make things go her way, but her daughter has different ideas and wants to love who she wants. It examines the desire to get ahead in a society that says everyone is equal but also celebrates the resourcefulness with which people solve their own problems.

The Graduate
The Graduate
This 1967 film is widely regarded as one of the best American movies ever made. Now remembered almost as much for its Simon and Garfunkel music as its deadpan comedy and being the role that established Dustin Hoffman as the hottest actor in Hollywood. It became a cultural icon for capturing the spirit of 60s angst of a young man on the make, while garnering a batch of Oscar nominations. After watching the movie on your own, join us to relive (or experience!) those feelings at our discussion.

The Unix philosophy emphasizes simplicity, modularity, and the idea that programs should do one thing well and work together. However, CLI programs are primarily used by humans. Programs that you actually enjoy using can achieve both of these aims of composability and human-centeredness. This talk explores what makes CLIs great: fast, trusted, and delightful. Through real-world examples from modern tools like uv, cargo, ripgrep, and GitHub CLI, you'll learn the design patterns that separate good CLIs from great ones. Whether you're building package managers, creating developer tools, or just curious why modern CLIs feel so much better, you'll leave with a practical checklist of techniques to apply to any CLI tool you build. **Agenda:** 7:00pm - Opening announcements 7:10pm - Opening Topic - Build an AI-powered, Sassy Speaking Plant 7:25pm - Main Topic - Designing Delightful CLIs with Python 7:50pm - Q&A
