Thursday Tabletop Games at Premiere Cinemas
It's **Thursday** & our main night of the week & the fun & games are just getting started here at DWL!
We're located here in the Cinema (which can be found on the 3rd floor of the Mercury Mall Shopping Centre) on:
* **Tuesdays & Thursdays**: From 17:30 to 22:00.
* **Saturdays**: From 12:00 to 22:00
š¦ And we're still running every Monday 6pm to 11pm at the Golden Lion Pub too.
šā There are hot & cold food & drink options available from the cinema at low prices!
Supporting Premiere Cinema by buying their food & drink IS supporting Dicing With Life! The cinema has been very generous to us by bringing us into their space & our way of showing our gratitude is by sending some business their way.
And their menu is surprisingly cheap! Especially compared to any other cinema.
Here's some cool examples of some great **offers**:
Buy a large **Popcorn** (it's a huge bucket!) or a large **fizzy drink** & it'll initially cost you Ā£4, BUT, take your bucket or cup back to the bar for a **refill** & the cinema will refill it back up to the top for just Ā£2! šæš„¤
That's half price Popcorn & Pop!
This also applies to **Ice Blasts** too (£5 initially but to refill it's just £3).
There's also Hot Dogs, Nachos, Pick n Mix & many other treats in store too! Check out their menu š
If you have any questions, please ask & let the fun commence! š²
Soul Orchestral Band
We've got the songs, the charts, the enthusiasm and some of the people. All we need is more people and your enthusiasm and your song choices.
All the standard elements of a Soul band plus orchestral instruments. Exploring the best Soul songs and the best arrangements - especially those featuring strings (violin, viola, cello), French horn, flute, brass, woodwinds, percussion, background vocals.
Let's have fun learning and playing a bunch of great tunes from the Soul / R&B back catalogue. There will be well-known standards and lesser-known or even obscure gems chosen from anywhere in the entire history of R&B.
This is for: lead vocals, backing vocals, guitars, bass, drums, keyboards, trumpet, trombone, French horn, flute, baritone sax, tenor sax, alto sax, woodwinds, violin, viola, cello, percussion.
Visit the "Thursday" page of our new spreadsheet to see vacancies, current members, current repertoire, and to make and see suggestions for new repertoire:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Zb1cMKrOMDvxacsw9AoRRstkx-M7r_NIrF4tZJIREU0/edit?usp=sharing
We'll learn some classic tunes by ear and play them. You do not need to be able to read music. Support is given in learning the parts (this may sometimes include written charts / tab).
The workshop will be led by Andy Dummett.
Andy has been privileged to play with a number of Soul legends including Stax, Atlantic and Motown recording artists - Eddie Floyd, Solomon Burke, Ben E King, Percy Sledge, Edwin Starr, Martha Reeves & the Vandellas, the Memphis Horns, Steve Cropper, Teenie Hodges, Sam Moore (Sam & Dave), Leon Ware, Dorothy Moore.

Soul Choir and Band
We're back - after a summer break - and we want more voices and more instruments for our workshops and for our next public performance (optional, no pressure - but I know you'll love it).
Ideal entry for singers new to our workshops.
Classic Soul songs in full vocal arrangements with live band.
Let's bring the backgrounds to the foreground (where they belong) and put them on an equal footing with the lead vocals.
Visit the "Thursday" page of our new spreadsheet to see vacancies, current members, current repertoire, and to make and see suggestions for new repertoire:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Zb1cMKrOMDvxacsw9AoRRstkx-M7r_NIrF4tZJIREU0/edit?usp=sharing
This is for you if you are:
⢠a backing vocalist
⢠a lead vocalist
⢠a backing vocalist who wants to develop their lead vocal skills
⢠a lead vocalist who wants to develop their backing vocal skills
⢠a singer who wants to develop their percussion skills
⢠a musician who wants to accompany singers and support them
⢠a musician who wants to develop their own vocal skills
⢠a guitarist, keyboard player, bass player, drummer, horn player, string player, percussionist
Use your existing skills and develop new ones.
The Soul repertoire offers an incredibly rich variety of vocal combinations. We will be able to choose songs to suit whatever combination of leads and backing vocals we get.
Have fun singing essential, but often neglected elements of the arrangements. Vocal backgrounds play an important role in Soul - using call-and-response; creating variety of texture; defining sections of the song; differentiating repeats of the same section; building excitement.
The workshop will be led by Andy Dummett.
Andy has been privileged to play with many of the great singers, songwriters and musicians from Stax, Atlantic, Motown and more
The way we use the studio has changed. This should be reassuring for those who are hesitant or cautious. Husky is a very Covid-secure venue and itās important that all our members are protected, especially the most vulnerable. I would not be starting up again if I wasnāt confident in their procedures.
Full details are available on the studioās website:

***šµ Leave those damn monkeys alone⦠or they might just show you how human they can be!***
**š Hey guys!** It looks like weāve got another monkey going wild on the big screen, and as a huge fan of last yearās **[The Monkey](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=husMGbXEIho)**, Iām totally down for another one going mad, especially if it means we might tick him off!
**Primate** is the new horror film by **Johannes Roberts**, and it follows a tropical vacation gone awry when Ben, a familyās adopted chimpanzee, is bitten by a rabid animal and suddenly turns violent. The film premiered at **[Fantastic Fest](https://www.fantasticfest.com)** with positive reviews, so I expect nothing more than a thrilling ride!
Weāll set up our usual evening drinks at the **Victory House Wine Bar** before heading off for a night of wild, bloody chills at the **Vue Cinema (Screen 9)**. Iāll be in **seat A6** in full view of that chimp, but feel free to grab any other seat if you're too scared. And of course, weāll wrap this up with our **[Letterboxd](https://letterboxd.com/movieroadhouse/) Review**.
**By the way, I do enjoy monkey business, but monkeys that go rogue I love even more, so letās see what this one wants to do!**

Strongroom + intro by James Bell, Senior Curator, BFI National Archive
A bank heist turns into a life-or-death race-against-time in Vernon Sewellās gripping British āBā thriller, which has been hailed by Tarantino, Scorsese and Edgar Wright.
* Director
Vernon Sewell
* With
Colin Gordon, Ann Lynn, Derren Nesbitt, Keith Faulkner
* UK 1962. 80min
* 35mm
* Certificate
PG
* A BFI release
Taut as a drum, Vernon Sewellās suspense thriller is an outstanding example of the lean British āBā film. A carefully-planned bank heist goes awry when the robbers are interrupted by the unexpected arrival of two nattering cleaners. The gang lock the manager and his secretary in the airtight vault and make off with the cash, but soon realise that the pair will suffocate and they will face a murder rap if they canāt free them. With only 12 hoursā worth of air in the vault, the clock is ticking. Gripping to the end, the film is a real rediscovery.
We will meet briefly before the film, and there will be the option to go for a drink and/or have a snack at the venue afterwards.

Nusantara Beat - SOLD OUT (Waiting list available)
\*\*As it says in the title, the tickets are now technically gone, but if you get on the list quickly, you should have a decent chance to nab one!\*\*
I've been describing Nusantara Beat to people as the Indonesian Altin Gun, which is kind of true but not the whole story. They essentially blend trad Indonesian folk music (by way of Amsterdam) with elements of funk and psych rock - it's very 70s-ish to my ears, but also very danceable, which you don't see at every show.
Here are some pseudo-live songs:

Sifat Manusia: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l9Hg9BGyL38

Tickets are sub-Ā£16 including booking fee and they're available [here](https://dice.fm/event/3oey9x-nusantara-beat-30th-jan-moth-club-london-tickets). Doors open at half seven so let's meet for a pre-drink at the Cock Tavern at seven and head in for the support band around eight.
