FREE Vegan Conversational French, English, and Spanish Class!!
\*These classes are not a language exchange, but instead are meant to be a step in between so that students feel confident maintaining in depth and grammatically correct oral conversations outside of class\*
\***Meetup event numbers only tend to show new students registering and do not include returning students attending class.** **Per class, there is an average of 7 students.** The first 2 classes are free and then only cost between $15 and $45 depending on which type of class you want to continue with.\*
These French, Spanish, and English, classes are primarily meant for adults who are travellers, or who are planning to live in a francophone, hispanophone, or anglophone country. *English in this class can only taught in French and Spanish unless you are an advanced learner* The classes are primarily oral-based through guided conversations. They will teach you how to handle conversations in situations such as **"Going to the Convenience Store"**, **"Making Plans"**, **"Negotiating Prices"**, and **"Going out for a Drink"**. To ensure that students get used to using the language automatically, students will learn to maintain contextual conversations with timing before moving on to the next lesson. **Program is also offered in private and online classes**. Call (647)787-9953, e-mail us info@monkeylingo.ca, or visit monkeylingo.ca for more information! **Online and private classes are also available!**
No other French nor Spanish classes are as oral as these ones. We guarantee it! Group classes are hosted at **600 Bay Street** (Wishbone Animal Rights Lab) every Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Call (647)787-9953 upon arrival if no one is there to let you in, and someone will come down to let you in.
Parking is available across from the Greyhound bus station on Elm Street and Bay Street.
Quantifying Race: Histories of Statistical Modeling in Human Population Genetics
This talk synthesizes recent historical research demonstrating the close relationship between developments in statistical methods and debates over racial categories and racial admixture in human genetics. I focus on three temporal snapshots, beginning with the early 20th century peak in the collection of quantitative data by physical anthropologists for the purpose of classifying racial groups and detecting histories of human migrations and admixture. In this period, Indian statistician P. C. Mahalanobis formulated his famous distance function — still in use today for applications ranging from finance to machine learning — in order to answer questions about racial admixture in colonial India. By the postwar period, human geneticists collected different kinds of data and developed new statistical approaches, but still largely aimed to address similar questions about “populations” or “ethnic groups” shaped by concepts of racial difference. For example, major scientific disputes emerged between the 1950s and 1970s about the validity of statistical methods used to estimate racial admixture in communities of African Americans and Ashkenazi Jews. I conclude with a reflection on recent computational methods used to analyze “biogeographical ancestry” and the enduring problem of categorizing populations in human genetics.

Associate Professor
Institute for the History and Philosophy of Science and Technology
University of Toronto
**About the Speaker:**
am a historian of the life sciences in the modern Middle East, focusing on developments in genetics, evolutionary biology, physical anthropology, and medicine during the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. My current research examines the relationship of these sciences to the formation of racial, ethnic, and national identities, and how these identities, in turn, shape the dynamics of transnational scientific collaborations. My training in Middle East area studies informs my commitment to working across languages, geographies, and disciplines to challenge Eurocentric approaches to the history of science as well as science and technology studies.
My next book will examine scientific connections between the Middle East and South and East Asia. Tentatively called “Race Across Asia,” this project traces the flow of scientific ideas and research practices surrounding race and nationalism between Japan, India, Iran, and Turkey since the 1950s. Looking specifically at the fields of medical genetics, forensic fingerprinting, and archaeology, I am investigating how different kinds of trans-Asian scientific expeditions and educational networks relate to competing notions of Asian identity.

This is a talk with audience Q&A presented by the University of Toronto's Centre for Ethics that is free to attend and open to the public. The talk will also be streamed online with live chat here [to be posted].
About the Centre for Ethics (http://ethics.utoronto.ca):
The Centre for Ethics is an interdisciplinary centre aimed at advancing research and teaching in the field of ethics, broadly defined. The Centre seeks to bring together the theoretical and practical knowledge of diverse scholars, students, public servants and social leaders in order to increase understanding of the ethical dimensions of individual, social, and political life.
In pursuit of its interdisciplinary mission, the Centre fosters lines of inquiry such as (1) foundations of ethics, which encompasses the history of ethics and core concepts in the philosophical study of ethics; (2) ethics in action, which relates theory to practice in key domains of social life, including bioethics, business ethics, and ethics in the public sphere; and (3) ethics in translation, which draws upon the rich multiculturalism of the City of Toronto and addresses the ethics of multicultural societies, ethical discourse across religious and cultural boundaries, and the ethics of international society.

It is similar to Tai Chi, but faster and more dynamic.

Toronto Vegan Drinks 💞 Valent❤️Onion🧅Edition💘❄️
Vegan Drinks is a social event for those interested in making new friends and meeting like-minded people. We meet up on the last Friday of the month. You don't have to be a vegan to come and enjoy the fun (in fact we encourage you to bring your veg and non-veg friends!), but only vegan food and drinks are available for purchase. There is no cover charge but we encourage everyone to support our hosts by buying some food and/or drinks!
This month, we’re warming up winter with a late-bloom Valentine twist at the vibrant Dosa Mahal on Roncesvalles! ❄️✨ Sure, Valentine’s Day may be behind us — but love (and onions) come in many layers, and neither one follows a calendar.
Welcome to Valent-Onion: a celebration of cozy connection, great conversation, and the kind of food that makes your heart flutter and your eyes water (in the best way).
Come thaw out with us over comfort classics — from crispy dosas to bold, flavorful bites — and let a little spring onion energy peek through the winter window… a tiny edible reminder that brighter days are on the way.
Immerse yourself in an exclusively vegan evening by our gracious hosts - engaging conversations, unwind in the welcoming atmosphere, and tantalize your taste buds - with Dosa Mahal's mouthwatering delights (https://dosamahal.com/). From scrumptious grub to refreshing drinks, gluten-free dosas and pakoras, there's something for everyone to enjoy.
** Valent-Onion Event**
For this special winter edition, we’re keeping things warm, friendly, and deliciously vegan. Whether you’re single, coupled, complicated, or just here for the dosa — you’re invited.
Expect:
✨ great company
✨ cozy winter vibes
✨ bold flavours
✨ and maybe a little onion romance
**How does it work?**
*This will be a dry event. Bring your stories, not your spirits *
Just show up, have fun, and meet new people! Name tags will be available so you won't have to remember a million names! Talk about your interests, your favourite recipes and restaurants, your dream job to save the animals, the environment, your ethics, or anything and everything!
Come for the food. Stay for the connections. Leave with a full heart (and possibly a little onion breath)
Let's go sliding down, let's go tobogganing!
Moving this event to February 26, Thursday evening. Good snowfall predicted
Can't let the snowfall go to waste, hence, we are going tobogganing. Let's connect with our 8 year old selves and make this snowy Saturday adventurous and magical!
The plan - Slide down the hill and then climb up to slide down again.
Skills needed -
1. Ability to scream your lungs out.
2. Ability to fall not-so-gracefully
Things you need -
1. A sled, tobogganing mat (Canadian Tire has some under $10), or anything that helps you slide down.
2. Snow pants are recommended
3. Boots with good grip are also a great idea.
4. Something to cover your mouth, again optional but good to have.
We’ll take turns racing down the hill, cheer each other on, pause for breath and just enjoy being outside together.
After this event, for the magical part (for whoever's interested), we will head towards Trillium Park to see the light displays (another event from our meet up group). On the way we will stop to grab a bite, hot chocolate and coffee.

## ✨ Lunch at the Old Spaghetti Factory – Comfort Food & Great Company! ✨
**Classic Italian • Cozy Vibes • Easy Conversation**

Tucked into a historic downtown building, this iconic Italian spot feels like stepping into another time. Think **vintage décor, antique touches, old-school charm**, and big bowls of comforting pasta that make you feel instantly at home. ️
This is the kind of lunch that’s not rushed, not fancy, and not intimidating — just **good food, relaxed vibes, and an easy way to connect with others** around the table. Whether you’re craving classic spaghetti, rich sauces, or just a warm place to escape the day, this is the perfect midday hang.
Come for the carbs, stay for the conversation.
