FREE HIKE 23km | North Downs Way Dorking to Guildford
FREE HIKE 23km | North Downs Way Dorking to Guildford
**📈 Grade: 🥾🥾🥾 Level 3/5 (Moderate)** 📍 **MEETING POINT:** * 09:20 **[Dorking Main railway station](https://w3w.co/wasp.manliness.bake)** 🚶 **WALK STARTS**: * 09:30 **[Dorking Main railway station](https://w3w.co/wasp.manliness.bake)** 🏁 **WALK FINISHES**: * About 16:00 to 17:00 Guildford town centre \|\| **[Guildford Railway Station](https://w3w.co/abode.begun.closes)** (depends on group pace) Join us for a leisurely *(5 to 5.5km/h walking speed)* winter walk following the North Downs Way from Dorking to Guildford, a route rich in history, scenery, and quiet countryside. Beginning in Dorking, we first follow a section of the ancient Pilgrims Way. While today it is a peaceful gravel track, in 1170 this route carried medieval pilgrims travelling from Winchester to Canterbury Cathedral to visit the shrine of Thomas Becket following his martyrdom. Soon, the trail climbs onto the North Downs Way, leading us into tranquil woodland paths with occasional viewpoints opening out across the surrounding landscape. The steady ascent is rewarding rather than strenuous, easing us into the rhythm of the walk. We continue through West Hanger and Netley Park, where shaded woodland, birdsong, and winter wildlife create a calm and immersive atmosphere. These quieter sections offer a welcome contrast to the open ridges and invite a slower pace. Our lunch stop is at West Hanger, where picnic tables are available and there is the option to purchase a hot drink from the kiosk. It is an ideal place to rest, refuel, and enjoy the peaceful setting. Refreshed, we continue on toward Newlands Corner, a much-loved beauty spot offering panoramic views, a café, toilets, and open picnic areas. This is another excellent pause point to take in the wide Surrey Hills scenery. Leaving Newlands Corner, the path crosses Albury Downs before climbing steadily to St Martha’s Hill. At the summit, the historic hilltop church and sweeping views over the North Downs and Tillingbourne Valley provide one of the most memorable highlights of the day. From here, we descend toward Guildford across Pewley Down, a beautiful stretch of open chalk downland with far-reaching views and a real sense of space. It is one of the finest viewpoints along the southern edge of the North Downs and a fitting approach into town. Our journey concludes at Guildford Castle, with time to explore the historic surroundings, wander into the town centre, and optionally round off the day with a celebratory drink at one of Guildford’s welcoming local pubs, including an optional visit to **[Wetherspoons](https://w3w.co/mostly.deputy.mutual)** in the town centre. **✅ WHO CAN JOIN:** 🧑‍🤝‍🧑 Adults aged 21 and over 👶 No children 🐾 No pets (allergies and phobias) 📅 **RSVP POLICY**: Please RSVP only if you can attend, and update your response if your plans change. JANUARY 17 - 25 - HIKE MOUNT KENYA & GO ON SAFARI
JANUARY 17 - 25 - HIKE MOUNT KENYA & GO ON SAFARI
**Backabush has some exciting plans for another expedition. This time we are heading for Kenya, to the trekkers summit of Africa's second highest mountain!** Point Lenana is our goal at **4985m** where we hope to arrive as the sun rises over the central plains of Kenya. When bagging high African summits most people head to Kilimanjaro but the journey up Mt Kenya has far fewer crowds and is arguably a much more interesting hike. As with many mountains, not all paths up are equal. We will take the Chogoria route, led by our expert local team. This route is the most scenic and varied in its landscape so we can experience the most beautiful sides of this magnificent mountain. We will spend 6 days and 5 nights camping on the mountain, descending on the opposite side along the Sirimon route, sleeping in tents along the way. We will be supported by our experienced team of guides, cooks and porters. Our local team will also provide us with all the camping equipment we need. **Difficulty** Our first days on the mountain will be shorter than average hiking days whilst our bodies adapt but **BE WARNED**; the summit day will be a massive challenge, hiking for 12 hours at high altitude with a 2.30am wake up call so we can reach the summit for sunrise. **Weather** On safari it will be - yes you guessed it - warm. January is one of the best times to climb Mt Kenya as it's in the dry season so clear skies are much more likely but **as we approach the summit it will be very cold**. Snow is not uncommon and at our high camps we may encounter temperatures as low as -10 at night. So its thermals, fleeces and down jackets at top. **Acclimatisation** This has to be considered carefully. Our plan is to gradually ascend, spending 6 days on the mountain so we have time to properly acclimatise and enjoy our hike. Many companies offer 5 day, and even 4 day itineraries but as we will be travelling from almost sea level in the UK this would put us at too high risk of experiencing altitude sickness. With an extra day we should be able to enjoy our trek much more. **[See the full itinerary here](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1nbvxZENE8JnjF_1OXhaVGwyLvHR2LAOP-JHUjKk79FY/edit?usp=sharing)** **SAFARI -** We couldn't possibly plan a trip to Kenya without taking some time to experience some of the best wildlife spotting opportunities in the world. After our tough mountain hike we have planned a 3 night safari staying in comfortable lodges so we can shower, rest and recover from our trek. First we will stay for 2 nights in the **Samburu National Reserve**, a vast expanse of remote pristine wilderness, bordering the Ewaso Ng'iro River. This area is home to elephants, lions, zebras, ostriches, giraffes, as well as leopards, cheetahs and more. We will then travel to the **Ol Pejeta Conservancy** for another game drive where will also stay the night in a safari lodge. This is a not-for-profit protected area home to **'the big 5'** which has incredible bio diversity and some hugely effective conservation projects. It is regarded as an example of how safari tourism can have a positive impact on the local communities as well as the wildlife populations. Check out their great work here: [https://www.olpejetaconservancy.org/](https://www.olpejetaconservancy.org/) In Ol Pejeta we will also visit the Jane Goodall Chimpanzee Sanctuary for chimps rescued from the bushmeat trade. While visiting Ol Pejeta we also have the opportunity to **experience a night time game drive**, a truly unique experience in the dark to spot the nocturnal wildlife with the park rangers. This is $75 USD extra. **Accommodation** * Mountain tents at basic campsites on Mt Kenya * 2 nights at Sopa Lodge Samburu, with a pool, outdoor dining and lounge room. Shared twin rooms. * 1 night at The Stables, Ol Pejeta. Shared rooms in a no-frills lodge with shared bathrooms. Chosen for it's excellent location amongst the wildlife in the Conservancy * Single supplement £75 **WHAT'S INCLUDED** * All transport to and from Nairobi * Mt Kenya National Park daily fees * Ol Pejeta Conservancy daily park fees * Samburu National Reserve daily park fees * Experienced local trekking guides * Porters and cooks for the hike * All meals from pick up to drop off. See itinerary for details. * Mountain tents, sleeping mats and other camping equipment * Campsite fees * 3 nights safari lodge accommodation in shared rooms * Safari guides and safari vehicles for game drives, see itinerary * 1 Backabush trip leader * Financial protection in line with package travel regulations **WHAT'S NOT INCLUDED** * Flights to Nairobi * Visas * Travel Insurance * Tips for guides, cooks and porters (tips for porters are expected as and we should budget a minimum of 60USD each for this) * Night time game drive $75 USD * **Single supplement** of £75 * Unexpected increases in park fees and taxes - we may be asked to cover increases as 2026 park fees are provisional. **TRAVEL TO NAIROBI** You will need to make you own travel arrangements to **arrive in Nairobi on** **Friday 16th January or before**. I recommend these direct British Airways flights but you can find cheaper flights at very similar times with a stop over starting at around £450 return including baggage with Lufthansa. You will also need to make your own arrangements for accommodation on Friday 16 January. I can recommend a convenient hotel so we can stay together if people would like to. Outbound - Friday 16 January British Airways BA65 Departs - LHR London Heathrow 09:45 Arrives - NBO Nairobi Jomo Kenyatta 21:35 Return - Sunday 25 January British Airways BA64 Departs - NBO Nairobi Jomo Kenyatta 23:55 Arrives - LHR London Heathrow 06:15 +1 We will arrive back in Nairobi on Sunday afternoon so please book a flight departing no earlier than 20:00pm. **HOW TO BOOK** The trip cost is £1650. To confirm your place a £450 deposit is required. Payment can then be made as follows £400 by 01/06 £400 by 01/08 £400 by 01/10 Please send all payments through online banking, using **KENYA** as the payment reference. **Your RSVP is not enough to reserve a space.** The account details are: Account Name: BACKABUSH XPLORERS Sort Code: 090127 Account Number: 22440622 The following "terms and conditions" apply to all trip reservations: [https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ngc5A61k76qb6HGMeTK96AVaXn0565yPS9p42IPzIy8/](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ngc5A61k76qb6HGMeTK96AVaXn0565yPS9p42IPzIy8/edit?usp=sharing) Please email nathancapay@googlemail.com when you send payment so that we can confirm everything with you.

The seals in Norfolk are truly one of Britain's most special sights. Without any doubt, they're an incredible WOW factor and one that you must see! On this day hike, we'll walk along the top of the sand dunes and enjoy stunning panoramic views across the North Sea. On our way, we'll pass the much-loved grey seal colony at Horsey Beach, which draws thousands of visitors each year, **particularly between November and March**, when the seals come ashore to breed. There are literally hundreds and hundreds of seals and their pups stretching for as far as the eye can see! The whole walk is in the Broads National Park – one of fifteen national parks in the UK. You'll discover its iconic windmills, navigable waterways and broads (man-made, shallow lakes). With over 125 miles of lock-free waterways, the Norfolk Broads have more miles of waterway than Venice or Amsterdam, and are an extremely popular boating holiday destination! Locals like to call the Broads “the Venice of the East”. 💪 This walk is **suitable for all abilities** – it is almost entirely flat and done at a very gentle pace to allow us enjoy the nature and take plenty of pictures. **HIKE HIGHLIGHTS** * Watch seals and their young from a close distance at Horsey Gap, home to one of the biggest colonies of grey seals in Britain. * Take a gentle stroll over the vast open expanse of the golden sand dunes of Winterton Beach – a Nature Reserve and Site of Special Scientific Interest. The area is a veritable haven for birds and all kinds of wildlife and is widely regarded as having the best sand dunes in Norfolk. * See the spectacular Horsey Windpump – the youngest and largest windpump in the Norfolk Broads. It was built in 1912 to pump water out from the surrounding land so that it could be used for farming. * Discover Horsey Mere, often regarded as one of the most beautiful of the northern broads and famous for its internationally important wildlife. * Walk the newly opened stretch of the England Coast Path – a new National Trail around all of England's coast, which once completed will be the longest coastal walking route in the world (4,500 kilometres in length!). **DISTANCE & DIFFICULTY** Distance: 6 miles (10km). Walk & Talk About Life's Big Questions
Walk & Talk About Life's Big Questions
[The Board Walks](http://www.theboardwalks.com/) are for curious people who love deep conversations. If that sounds like you, **bring a thoughtful topic** and join us for a 5-mile walk (10,000+ steps!). **HOW IT WORKS** **Step 1: Bring a topic** Before you arrive, think of **one** topic you want to explore. A question. A thought that's been on your mind. An obsession you want to geek out on. This is your ticket to the event. **Step 2: Circle up & share** We gather in a circle. Your friendly walk host gives a speech to set the tone. Everyone shares: your name, what you're grateful for, and your topic. That's it. 60 seconds. **Step 3: Walk, talk & float** We walk 5 miles. You naturally drift into conversation with 2-3 people at a time, pulled by topics that spark your curiosity. When you're ready to move on, just say: "I'm going to float!" **Step 4: Feel more alive** Two hours flies by. You're back where you started — but you feel different. More alive. More energized. More connected to yourself and others. That's why regulars join 20+ times. *For more details, read our [Orientation Guide.](https://www.theboardwalks.com/orientation)* **HOW TO BRING A GREAT TOPIC** A great topic = something you're genuinely curious about. Recent topics include: * "What are you passionate about right now?" * "What makes a good friend?" * "What's a belief you used to hold that you've completely changed?" * "How do you want to be remembered?" * "What would you do if money wasn't a factor?" Think of your topic like the dish you're bringing to our conversational potluck. If everyone brings an A+ dish (i.e. energizing, uplifting, expansive), we'll all walk away feeling lighter and brighter. **WHAT TO EXPECT** This isn't a fitness event with casual chitchat. It's a walking think tank where we explore life's big questions together, beyond small talk. *If you're looking for light banter or a standard networking event, this probably isn't the right fit.* But if you crave depth, genuine connection, and conversations that make you feel alive? You'll love it here. **FAQ** * Wear casual athletic attire and sneakers. It's a long walk! * We have multiple first-timers at each event. We work hard to create a welcoming, inclusive, clique-free space. * We welcome people of **all** ages, backgrounds, and industries who align with the [intention](https://www.theboardwalks.com/ground-rules) of this space. * Rain or shine, we've been out here nearly every week since July 2022. If the event is cancelled, we'll let you know. * Dogs, babies in strollers, parents, and friends are welcome — please text/email them the event link so they can RSVP and prepare a topic! **LOGISTICS** * If you'll arrive over 10 minutes late, we suggest skipping the event. It's hard to find us once we start walking, and your host can't answer messages during the event. * This walk is designed for everyone to *move together at the same steady pace* (about 20 min/mile). This format works best when the whole group moves in unison. If you have mobility limitations, we kindly encourage you to find an event better suited to your needs. * Read our [Orientation Guide](https://www.theboardwalks.com/orientation) for full details. * If you enjoy the event, send **[this](http://www.theboardwalks.com/)** to a friend or sign up for our **[newsletter](https://theboardwalks.beehiiv.com/)**. We're in multiple cities with more on the way. 🤠👋 **IF YOU WANT TO GO DEEPER...** [The Board](https://stan.store/ellebeecher/p/the-board) is the next step: a high-trust collective for renaissance people devoted to creating, connecting, and building lives that light us up. * This is a global HQ for people who crave big talk, deep connection, and dream collaborations with people across industries. If the walks feel like a spark... The Board is the fire. Apply [here](https://stan.store/ellebeecher/p/the-board).

**Important time note:** Please plan on arriving between 5:30 and 6:00 as the elevators lock after 6 and you'll need to message us and we'll need to come get you. The building address is 4450 Bridge Park The entrance is 6620 Mooney St, Suite 400 **Abstract** GitHub Copilot is rapidly changing how developers write, understand, and maintain code. Powered by generative AI and deeply integrated into modern development environments, Copilot acts as an intelligent coding assistant, helping developers move faster while maintaining quality and focus. In this session, we’ll explore what GitHub Copilot is, how it works, and where it fits into a real-world developer workflow. We’ll break down what Copilot can (and cannot) do, where it can be used, and how licensing differs for individuals and organizations. Most importantly, this talk goes beyond theory with a live, hands-on demo showcasing Copilot inside the IDE and on GitHub, demonstrating how it can assist with code generation, refactoring, learning new APIs, and accelerating day-to-day development tasks. Designed for developers, technical leads, and engineering managers, this session provides a practical introduction to AI-assisted development, highlights best practices for getting value from Copilot, and closes with guidance on how to continue learning and evolving alongside this rapidly advancing tool. Attendees will leave with a clear understanding of how GitHub Copilot can enhance productivity, improve developer experience, and fit into modern software teams today, not someday. **YouTube Link** TBA
