Energy & Evolution (13 miles)
"*The experiments I am about to relate may be repeated with great ease, whenever the sun shines."*
North Downs nature from Zone 6! On Thomas Young's birthday in 1773, this walk links places connected with two great intellects.
Armed with a piece of board into which he cut a couple of slits, in 1803 Thomas Young proved for the first time that light travels in waves. A year later he was developing a theory of capillary phenomena and surface tension. Also defined the term 'energy'. When not expanding knowledge of physics, there was time to decipher the Rosetta Stone and define as a group the Indo-European languages. Thomas ended up at Farnborough in Kent, whose church sits on the edge of open countryside, invisible to the metropolis that lurks behind.
Along the way we'll lunch at Downe, home of Charles Darwin.
"*Besides love and sympathy, animals exhibit other qualities connected with the social instincts which in us would be called moral."*

Hike to West Wittering Beach and East sand dunes
This beautiful coastal hike takes us from the historic city of Chichester out to the wide open shoreline of West Wittering, combining peaceful canal paths, estuary views, and a stunning stretch of sandy beach.
Starting from Chichester, we follow the scenic Chichester Ship Canal before reaching the estuary at Birdham. The route then traces the coastline along the Chichester Harbour, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty known for its wildlife, sailing waters, and expansive views.
Heading south, we reach the striking sand dunes of East Head, with far reaching views across to Hayling Island and the Isle of Wight. A relaxing walk along West Wittering beach brings us inland through quiet lanes and picturesque villages before finishing in West Wittering.
We then take a short bus ride back to Chichester, where there is time for a well earned drink or meal before heading back to London.

🥾 **Hike Description**
This is Outdooraholics’ most popular hike, a dramatic and exhilarating journey across the chalk cliffs of Sussex that we have been leading for over 12 years. The **Seven Sisters** are a spectacular series of gleaming white chalk cliffs shaped over thousands of years by natural erosion processes. Erosion has since created an “eighth sister,” and today the cliffs stand as one of England’s most iconic landscapes.
We begin in the coastal town of **Seaford**, home to a Napoleonic-era **Martello Tower** built in 1810 as part of a chain of 103 coastal defences against French invasion. From here, the trail climbs onto the cliff tops, where for much of the day we walk high above the sea, treated to endless coastal views and fresh sea air.
Our route follows the **South Downs Way**, passing through **Birling Gap** and past the striking **Belle Tout Lighthouse**, famously moved 17 metres inland in 1999 to save it from falling into the sea. The final highlight is **Beachy Head**, a dramatic beauty spot with sheer chalk cliffs dropping into the sea below.
We finish in **Eastbourne**, statistically England’s sunniest town, where we celebrate our coastal adventure with refreshments in a local pub.

**Cliffs – danger**
There are sheer drops off the cliffs and some of these soft chalk cliffs are crumbling at the edges with chunks regularly falling and no fencing in place. Please keep at least 3 metres away from the edges. If you fall, or the ground at the edge of the cliff collapses it will almost certainly be fatal.
