LET'S PLAY: ZARNITSA Sports Megagame [It's like Russian Capture the Flag]
**Join LCC Sunday, March 8th at the Hackney Marshes playing field as we make another attempt at playing the Soviet Union's very own *Zarnitsa,* a capture-the-flag alternative with a small twist.**
**WHAT IS ZARNITSA?**
Zarnitsa (ĐаŃниŃа), or heat-lightning, officially known as the All-Union Young Pioneer military sports game "Zarnitsa", is a massive multi-player physical sports game developed and practiced by the Young Pioneers communist youth organisation during the Soviet era. The game provides a simulation of military actions such as reconnaissance, co-ordinated offensives, giving chase, etc. Popular once again in modern Russia, this is a simple game designed for children and young people in military/cadet organisations, but great fun for active people of all ages.
The rules of Zarnitsa are based on the classic capture the flag concept. Two teams each have a "base area" with a flag contained within, concealed or otherwise. Each team's goal is to protect their own flag and seize the other team's and bring it back to the base area. Players can walk, run, sneak, hide, create diversions and use any means short of physical violence to achieve their objectives.
What makes Zarnitsa different from classic CTF is simply this: every player has two velcro-attached shoulder straps that serve as health indicators and can be torn off by the opponents. Losing one indicates "wounded", losing two indicates "dead". The "wounded" players cannot run and should only walk. The "dead" players return to a respawn point or leave the game in some modes.
Why are we doing this? Capture the flag is simply top fun and anyone who says otherwise is joking themselves. Zarnitsa's slightly elevated level of complexity should give us just that extra challenge needed to really make it interesting. That said, this is our first go with organising multiplayer sports games, so we'll see what the results are! As always comments, questions, suggestions and concerns are more than welcome - just contact an organiser.
Sports games are a great way to get and stay active, meet new people, and break the monotony of everyday life under British capitalism. Let's get out there!
For our first attempt at organising a little Zarnitsa league here in London, we'll hit up Hackney Marshes and Wick Woodland. We'll divide into two teams; each will receive coloured vests or other garments to which the health indicator strips are attached. Then we'll take up our places, count down from 60 seconds, and let the games begin!
**Note: we'll want at least five people per team for this to really work right, so we'll cancel or reschedule if this one gets less than 9 RSVPs.** There's no limit to how big our group can be of course, so please do join us! Just be sure to either turn up on the day or change your RSVP if you can't make it in the end, just so we know what to expect.
Take care and see you on the pitch!

THE CONUNDRUM OF KENSINGTON
The allure is intoxicating, almost irresistible.
A succession of exquisitely beautiful townscapes, infinitely variable and constantly changing, yet somehow all coherent parts of a magnificent production, like a Mozart concerto.
Every view seems curated, polished and prepared. Thereâs no litter, no chewing gum, and no security guards! Yet this is traditional âpublic spaceâ\*
This is the central area of Kensington\*\*, smallest yet most densely populated London borough, home to Grenfell Tower, and Kensington Palace.
It is simply great: no one would not want to live here. I promise you, by the time we reach âThe Blackbirdâ you will be ready to give up your Vow of Poverty, and move heaven and earth, to move here!
In fact, when our New Town Master Planners aspire to âurbanityâ, in their new developments, Central Kensington might well be what they have in mind.
Part of the explanation is, of course, âmoneyâ. Oodles of it. Capitalism spends money to make money, and thereâs âinvestmentâ here: in every project, every house, every shop. It seems to have increased local authority spending too: York stone footways, in perfect condition, and most roadways recently resurfaced.
âThe Conundrumâ is, that this very high quality public realm seems to be unachievable elsewhere.
How has this come about? Do the best quality areas become unaffordable? Or does wealth lead to good quality?
Itâs hard to believe, but in Kensingtonâs centre, from the High Street to Cromwell Road, and from Warwick Road to Queenâs Gate, there are, today, no socially rented homes *at all*, according to the official maps.
Today the borough has the lowest proportion of social housing in Inner London (22%), and some of its most expensive houses.
Across the whole borough, there are about 7K council-owned flats, plus the philanthropic providers' 12K more. But they are mostly in big estates in the southwest corner or far north: Worldâs End, Lancaster West and Dalgarno Gardens.
It was not always so. From 1726 there was a workhouse. In the 1860âs terraces were built in Blithfield\*\*\* Street for âthe working classesâ made homeless by District Railway project, and some âworkersâ cottagesâ in Pembroke Place became âa notorious slumâ, Wait âtil you see them now.
And at the very edge of our area, in Warwick Road, Arup Associates more recently built 115 flats for the council: more than half are now âRight-to-Buyâ leaseholds.
To address âThe Conundrumâ, weâre going to meet at High Street Kensington Station, and walk through these, the oldest and most disorganised streets of the borough, from the âOld Court Suburbâ\*\*\*\* nearest to Kensington Palace, heading south and west, following approximately the chronological path of the areaâs development, from the earliest 2-storey terraces, to Victorian semi-detached villas, towering 7-storey stuccoed Italianate blocks, and late-Victorian and Edwardian mansion flats.
Now almost exclusively housing, the western parts of the area also once exhibited commercial, light industrial, and educational and healthcare activity, and along the way weâll see the impact on the area of the the arrival of the District Railway in the 1870âs, the Cromwell Road extension just before WW2, and the West London Air Terminal in 1957.
Our walk leads directly to âThe Blackbirdâ PH, opposite Earlâs Court Station, where our reserved table is being prepared.
Hope you can come!
Andy
\*could it be that residents get straight into their cars, and donât walk along the streets dropping litter and gum?
\*\*= the Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea, created in 1965 from a merger of the Metropolitan Boroughs of Kensington, and its tiny neighbour, Chelsea.
\*\*\*sic
\*\*\*\*the development of Kensington Square in 1685, an urban space among the fields. It was actually started a few years *before* King William and Queen Mary moved their residence, for health reasons, to a mansion then called Nottingham House, now âKensington Palaceâ.

Please ring the doorbell, and a staff member will come and escort you into the building. If a staff member takes longer than 5 minutes, please call the front desk at 614-689-2020. This is a new process for us, and we do not want to keep you waiting! We appreciate your patience as we navigate this temporary change.
The shelter needs a volunteer count the day before the event so sign-up ends Monday at 4:50 PM. Afterwards some of us go to the Omnipresent Atheists Weekly Meetup in progress to have a bit to eat or drink (http://www.meetup.com/omnipresentatheists/).
Volunteers must be 14 or older. Since we will be working around families, the YMCA does not permit volunteering by individuals with convictions for violent or sexual crimes. The YMCA reserves the right to run background checks on volunteers.
For questions, comment on this page or contact: Andrew, awhit12@yahoo.com, (614)937-5802 (cell). Please let Andrew know if you volunteer anytime other than our COUNT events so that he can count your hours toward our service record.

**Hosted by:** Columbus Investors Club
### **Event Description**
Most people think retirement accounts are passive.
That theyâre âfor later.âThat you canât touch them. That real estate and retirement money donât mix.
Theyâre wrong.
This meetup is about how investors use **Self-Directed IRAs and Solo 401(k)s** to put retirement capital to workâŚ**buying real estate, funding deals, and even raising private money** (the right way).
### **Featured Guest Speaker: Amanda Holbrook**
Weâre excited to welcome **Amanda Holbrook of Specialized Trust Company** to break this down clearly and practicallyâŚso you understand whatâs allowed, how it works, and what to avoid.
### **What Youâll Learn**

**Flip inside a Self-Directed IRA or Solo-401(k)**
* How to structure the deal correctly
* How expenses must be handled
* When UBIT may apply
