a day out in BATTERSEA
A very popular guided walk and tour with Barrie
**BATTERSEA .**....the new and the old
This is more than the usual guided walk, this is an afternoon out as Barrie
takes you on a journey from Vauxhall to Battersea Park and takes you through a modern history of an area that is about to become Londons newest and most vibrant destinations.
Part one journeys along the riverside taking in the new American Embassy
and other interesting sites and arrives at the regenerated Battersea power station where Barrie will tell you all about its history and the massive new development.
Part two allows the group to wander, maybe have a snack or a coffee and take in the new Power station complex and immerse oneself in the
brilliance of what has been accomplished in the amazing redevelopment of the area.....30 mins allowed.....maybe not enough !!
Part three takes us into one of Londons most beautiful yet un appreciated parks where you will be told about the history of its golden years as one of Londons greatest attractions long since forgotten until now as Barrie brings it all back to life with photos and stories of his youth and his memories of great days out back in the 1950's
This is the tour of tours, one you will be talking about for weeks!
*warning.....this is a long walk and the whole experience*
*will take over three hours*
And the price is £14 cash on the day.
(sorry inflation is hitting hard)

Only wear good sturdy shoes, with ankle support, and carry a bottle of water and necessary medication. You need to be moderately fit for this walk and able to walk for at least 8 miles. This walk is suitable for the average experienced hill walker. Expect some hills. Do not attend this walk if you do not fit that description or if you have a medical condition (especially heart and/or lung conditions) that may impact upon your capability of completing the walk.
These walks are city walks and countryside walks where all the usual risks of injury during such walks apply resulting from interactions with road traffic, joggers, cyclists, e-scooters,other members of the public, animals (farm, domestic and wild), plants (allergic reactions), uneven surfaces, including portruding tree roots and potholes and there may be low overhanging branches.

Praed Street Picture Hunt
St Mary’s Hospital was founded in 1845 on Praed Street as a voluntary hospital for ’the deserving sick poor’ and opened the Medical School in 1854. Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin there.
This is another of our many outside Picture Hunts this year. If any issues with weather, we’ll switch to our 50-50 Trivia in the nearby Wetherspoon Sir Alexander Fleming, so turn up as something will be on regardless.
If you’re new to Picture Hunts, check previous events for winners and clue sheets.
This time, the event will be centred around different shops on one side of Praed St, Paddington, so there’s no crossing of busy roads.
Please aim to turn up for 1:00-1:30 when teams are being arranged. The Hunt starts at 1:30. You're losing search time if you're late! Bring a pen please.
As usual, portions of the road are split up into four areas where teams search for the locations of photographed items in the street, buildings or shop windows, and then record where they found them.
Picture Hunts are a great new way to get up to speed with slices of London history while sleuthing around the area.
Everyone is presented with twenty partial photos of objects around an area. Your team mission is to find them. Some well known, some well unknown!
This makes Picture Hunts more interesting and challenging, bringing out the best of your teams detecting skills.
You will also have a map of the area. It will be sub-divided into four sections, P, Q, R, S. Each photo will come from one of these.
Four players max per team, but the lower number teams get a point per player start from the biggest team.
For example, four teams of one, two, three and four. Four player team, no advantage, (the biggest and theoretically the more knowledge between them, except it doesn't always work like that). Three player team, one point start. Two player team, two point start. One player team, three point start.
Scores are always close and around the 15-20 points mark. How many players do you want in your team? There's a dilemma!
The clipboard holder enters one of the letters to note its area location. Dead simple, right? 90 minutes to do the hunt.
We have the usual prizes of chocolate, including some great new varieties.
There is also an equal prize for the funniest team name judged by Sue, my glamorous assistant. Names win prizes too! So there’s everything to play for.
We mark up at the quiz finish point. The Wetherspoon Sir Alexander Fleming.
Hunts are good fun and the proven experience so far is that members get to know each other better after working in teams as you all have to communicate. Great icebreakers.
This is what Meetup is all about. Come and join us.
There is a £7 cash/card charge for this event.
Contact number on the day is 07422334411 if your transport is delayed.
**If you can’t make it, please cancel using the “Edit RSVP Button”.**
**Your consideration is greatly appreciated.**

Stages, Plots and City Edges: A Walk through Hoxton and Shoreditch
Hoxton and Shoreditch are known today for their lively atmosphere, filled with restaurants, bars, and nightlife—perhaps a legacy of their historic position just beyond the jurisdiction of the City of London. Yet beneath this modern energy lies a rich and layered past.
Shoreditch dates back to at least 1148, and its name is thought to derive from “sewage ditch,” possibly linked to the River Walbrook. Hoxton was originally part of this area.
Shoreditch was home to a monastery from the 12th century until its dissolution under Henry VIII in 1539.
By the late 16th century, Shoreditch had become a cradle of English theatre. It was here that the first permanent playhouses in England were established. On this walk, we visit the sites of **The Theatre** and the **Curtain Theatre**, both closely associated with William Shakespeare, who worked there as an actor and playwright after arriving in London in his twenties. The actor-manager James Burbage famously dismantled The Theatre following a lease dispute and transported its timbers across the Thames to build the Globe.
The route then leads to Hoxton Square, scene of a dramatic duel between a playwright and an actor—just one of many stories of rivalry and intrigue that echo through these streets. As we continue, we encounter historic houses, pubs, a cinema, and a library, before arriving at the George and Vulture pub—said to have welcomed figures such as Kate Moss and Jarvis Cocker.
In Hoxton, we pass the former home of William Parker, a key figure in the Gunpowder Plot of 1605, as well as Cooke’s Eel and Pie Shop, serving since 1860.
Returning toward Shoreditch, the walk takes in the Geffrye Museum, housed in almshouses dating from 1714, the entrance to the Columbia Road Flower Market, and the historic church of St Leonard’s. We also explore Arnold Circus and the Boundary Estate—an ambitious housing development completed in 1900—before making our way back to Shoreditch High Street. Along the way, we note the Bishopsgate Goods Yard and Norton Folgate, sites that speak to the area’s industrial and commercial past.
We conclude at the Light Bar for a drink and further conversation.
The walk covers approximately 7–8 km.
Participants join and walk at their own responsibility.

LIMEHOUSE a living history threatened by Docklands
**LIMEHOUSE WALKING TOUR…**
This is three tours in one, firstly we have the history of the Chinese community who settled and lived in Limehouse in the first part of the twentieth century. Not a lot to see but much to talk about, especially the the truth over exaggerated fiction and rumours of opium dens and prostitution. A fascinating story of a time not so long ago
Then we move on to see the parts Limehouse of today that has been saved from the development of Docklands which towers over the area like a dragon ready to engulf all in its way. Some magnificent buildings that survived to remind us the nautical history of Limehouse back in the day.
Lastly we see Limehouse as the trendy area it has become with cafes and restaurants and a rich mans marina full of super boats we wish we could afford ourselves. This tour has everything, it's the real London not the sad tourist central London of today. Prepare yourselves for a real treat.
This tour will cost the usual £14 cash on the day
