Treasure Hunts

St Mary’s Hospital was founded in 1845 on Praed Street as a voluntary hospital for ’the deserving sick poor’ and opened the Medical School in 1854. Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin there. This is another of our many outside Picture Hunts this year. If any issues with weather, we’ll switch to our 50-50 Trivia in the nearby Wetherspoon Sir Alexander Fleming, so turn up as something will be on regardless. If you’re new to Picture Hunts, check previous events for winners and clue sheets. This time, the event will be centred around different shops on one side of Praed St, Paddington, so there’s no crossing of busy roads. Please aim to turn up for 1:00-1:30 when teams are being arranged. The Hunt starts at 1:30. You're losing search time if you're late! Bring a pen please. As usual, portions of the road are split up into four areas where teams search for the locations of photographed items in the street, buildings or shop windows, and then record where they found them. Picture Hunts are a great new way to get up to speed with slices of London history while sleuthing around the area. Everyone is presented with twenty partial photos of objects around an area. Your team mission is to find them. Some well known, some well unknown! This makes Picture Hunts more interesting and challenging, bringing out the best of your teams detecting skills. You will also have a map of the area. It will be sub-divided into four sections, P, Q, R, S. Each photo will come from one of these. Four players max per team, but the lower number teams get a point per player start from the biggest team. For example, four teams of one, two, three and four. Four player team, no advantage, (the biggest and theoretically the more knowledge between them, except it doesn't always work like that). Three player team, one point start. Two player team, two point start. One player team, three point start. Scores are always close and around the 15-20 points mark. How many players do you want in your team? There's a dilemma! The clipboard holder enters one of the letters to note its area location. Dead simple, right? 90 minutes to do the hunt. We have the usual prizes of chocolate, including some great new varieties. There is also an equal prize for the funniest team name judged by Sue, my glamorous assistant. Names win prizes too! So there’s everything to play for. We mark up at the quiz finish point. We are going to the escape room 'Pushed for Time' at Escape Plan. Pushed for Time is an Escape Room Adventure that starts at the offices of Riditure & Co. - the world's first and only Time Travel Agency. You have been recruited by Riditure & Co. to trace the disappearance of their engineers. Stuffed in the walls of an Art Deco elevator, you find some blueprints not seen since 1926. Hey, Hey, Hey! It is bank holiday and what do we do on bank holidays? We join me on a fabulous trip. :) This is one of the most fantastic coastal trips in the country and we are doing an easier version of it. There will be a few inclines but nothing like the nearby Seven sisters that you will see in the background so if you would like to enjoy walking in a living painting, join me for this trip. We will start and finish in the seaside town of Seaford, walk these gorgeous woods of Friston alongside pretty cottages and flowery gardens before we head back to Seaford for a well deserved diner or a pint or to London if you do not wish to stay along for some more laughter. And last but not least, the view of the Cuckmere river sneaking in the valley all the way to the sea is my favourite postcard view in the country, you could almost hear Vivaldi playing Spring in the background while unicorns and fauns are galloping in the fresh water. Really, do not miss it. The hike is around 11 miles and medium, although there will be a couple of inclines. A BIT OF HISTORY AND GEOGRAPHY. FRISTON FOREST: Friston Forest is within the South Downs National Park between Lulington Heath National Nature Reserve and Seven Sisters Country Park. It is the largest area of recently established forest in South East England, it has extensive carpets of Bluebells in late April to mid-May and some of the most stunning autumnal colours at the fall. CUCKMERE HAVEN: It is an area of flood plains in Sussex, England where the river Cuckmeer meets the English Chanel between [Eastbourne](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eastbourne) and [Seaford](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seaford,_East_Sussex). The river is an example of a meandering river The beach was commonly used by smugglers in the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries. For example, in 1783 two gangs of smugglers (each numbering 200 or 300) overcame officers of the law by weight of numbers and carried away a large quantity of goods. It is one of the most visited beaches in the UK. Bank Holiday Monday walk along the Thames from Putney Bridge to Chiswick, with visits to various historical places on route. We start at Fulham Palace, the historic residence of the Bishop of London. Medieval and Georgian architecture plus extensive gardens. We start at the Georgian café, option to take part in the Easter Egg Hunt within the gardens. We will then pass Craven Cottage, home of Fulham FC, using the new extended footpath by the river. We then walk along the long promenade to Hammersmith riverside. Refreshment stop at one of many delightful riverside pubs (popular film location) and then onto Chiswick village (tomb of Hogarth). We detour here to explore Chiswick House, Palladian architecture and the birthplace of English landscaped gardens. Cake stop at the conservatory café before finish at Turnham Green. We will walk 11 miles in the woods, the fields, in Castle grounds surrounded by bluebells, herds of the three species of deer that inhabit these ancient lands. We will walk pass two impressive middle ages buildings, first Knole castle, a stunner and Ingham Castle, the castle is a medieval moated manor house. The architectural writer John Newman once described it as "the most complete small medieval manor house in the county. The house is a Grade I listed building , and a stunning one! A chance to cross a few things off your bucket list in one day as we are looking to do Archery, Axe Throwing and Air Rifle Shooting all in one day! We will have 1 hour on each activity and be in a 2 groups of 10. After looking to just do all of these activities seperately, it made sense to do all of them in one fun day! **1\. Archery** The satisfying swoosh of your arrow speeding through the air and landing snugly in the target – there’s nothing else like it! All the instructors are absolute pros, so whether you’re trying it for the first time, or want to take your archery skills to the next level – they have got you covered. Our archery den is totally undercover, so you can get shooting rain or shine. With state-of-the art bows, multiple booths and expert training, archery days out don’t get much better than this. **2\. Axe Throwing\!** Viking warriors were thought to be one of the first tribes to throw axes and now its your turn! Nothing is more satisfying than hearing the thud as your axe lands perfectly into the target – there’s nothing else like it! With multiple lanes and expert advice, this activity can't be more fun whether you are with a group of friends. **3\. Air Rifle Shooting** Get your camo gear on (not compulsory), and get ready for some rifle shooting training. Our guns are top of the range, and we can adjust the distance of our targets to give you the ideal challenge. See if you’ve got what it takes to perfect your aim and make your mark on distant targets. Come assist Van Buren Shelter (https://ymcacolumbus.org/locations/vanburen) staff in serving dinners and cleaning up on the 3rd Tuesday of each month. Dinner for the women is 5-6 pm and for the families is 6:15-7:15 pm. There is ample free parking available in the shelter's lot. The recommended area to park is in green in the image above. There will be a new entrance for the time being. We are asking all volunteers to enter through the Donation Dock door, the orange mark on the image above. This door is located between the Single Adults and Family Shelter. You will see 2 large garage doors with a large green trash compactor in the center. Please head to the closest garage door to the building wall, with a ramp leading up. There, you will see a door with a sign stating instructions on how to enter the building. Please ring the doorbell, and a staff member will come and escort you into the building. If a staff member takes longer than 5 minutes, please call the front desk at 614-689-2020. This is a new process for us, and we do not want to keep you waiting! We appreciate your patience as we navigate this temporary change. The shelter needs a volunteer count the day before the event so sign-up ends Monday at 4:50 PM.
