Forest Walk and IWT (18 km)
Due to hot weather and haze conditions, we will do a forest walk and practice Interval Walk Training during the last 2 km towards the end point.
Interval Walk Training (IWT)—alternating fast-paced walking with slow, recovery-paced walking—is a highly effective, low-impact workout that improves cardiovascular fitness, boosts metabolism, and strengthens muscles. It is superior to steady walking for lowering blood pressure, improving aerobic capacity, reducing visceral fat, and enhancing insulin sensitivity.
**Key Health Benefits of Interval Walk Training (IWT):**
* **Improved Cardiovascular Health:** IWT strengthens the heart and enhances blood circulation by raising and lowering the heart rate, similar to a high-intensity interval training (HIIT) session.
* **Superior Metabolic Control:** It is particularly effective for managing blood sugar and increasing insulin sensitivity, making it ideal for managing or preventing type 2 diabetes.
* **Weight Management & Metabolism:** The "afterburn effect" from high-intensity intervals continues to burn calories after the workout ends, aiding in fat loss.
* **Increased Aerobic Capacity & Physical Fitness:** Studies indicate that switching paces consistently improves overall stamina and endurance better than continuous walking.
* **Muscle & Bone Strengthening:** It strengthens the legs and core, while improving bone density, which is crucial for preventing osteoporosis in older adults.
* **Improved Mental Health:** It aids in stress reduction, improves sleep quality, boosts energy, and elevates mood through the release of endorphins.
* **Accessible and Sustainable:** The training is low-risk and highly adaptable to various fitness levels, making it popular for improving longevity and mobility in adults over 60.

Evening Wind Down Walk - Tanjong Pagar to MBS
Come join us for an evening wind down walk after work - a pause in the bustle of the week to breathe, stretch your legs, and unwind with good company. You can chat, listen, or walk quietly - all are welcome.
**How it works (super simple):**
* **5 mins**
* We’ll meet, say quick hellos, and wait for individuals who may have difficulty finding the location or are rushing to end off a call (it happens, but please understand that we will move off after). Will be in black shirt, beige knee-length shorts.
* **35 mins**
* We’ll walk from Tanjong Pagar to Marina Bay Sands with a beautiful skyline (2.5km, \~4000 steps). Optional extension to Gardens by the Bay if time allows.
* Feel free to get to know others on the walk. Some optional light prompts on hand are... sharing a question or thought that you're hoping to reset from today, a hobby that you've been exploring, music preferences, latest quirky obsession etc. Leave some mental load behind.
**A quick note:**
* This isn’t a networking or sales event. Please no pitching, recruiting, or solicitation. No pressure at all to introduce yourself through work.
* Priority to folks who have attended a session previously. Please update RSVP if you can't make it so we can gage the group size prior.
* Will keep a lookout for weather forecast in case there's rain to be expected in the area.
**Friendly Reminders:**

* If possible, leave bulky equipment behind.
* Have fun, feel the breeze, and unwind...

FAQs
‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾‾
Q: What is a '12-minute run test'?
A: This is a fitness benchmark known as the Cooper Test. The goal is to run as far as you possibly can in 12 minutes. The distance you cover can be used to estimate your VO2 max, a key measure of aerobic fitness. We conduct this test on the third week of every quarter, allowing you to track your progress throughout the year.
Q: What is 'plyometrics'?
A: Plyometrics are jumping exercises designed to be explosive and powerful. They help build strength and power in your running muscles, which can translate to improved running economy and speed.
Q: Is this session suitable for beginners?
A: Yes, all are welcome. The run is a personal test, so you go at your own maximum effort. For the plyometrics, we encourage everyone to participate, but it's important to listen to your body. If you are new to this kind of exercise or feel you should sit out an exercise, please do.
Q: How is the session structured and how long is it?
A: The session lasts about an hour. We start with a 15-minute warm-up, followed by the 12-minute run test. After the run, we do a 20-minute plyometrics workout, followed by a cool-down.
Q: Do I need any special equipment?
A: No special exercise equipment is needed. However, you must have a way to time yourself for the 12-minute run. The timer on a phone or a simple watch is perfectly fine. Don't worry if you don't have a GPS watch to track your distance; your run host will provide a map of the track, and you can simply mark your finishing spot.
Q: Is there a place to leave my bag?
A: Yes. Most runners leave their bags together by the side of the track. However, this area is unattended. For valuables, we strongly recommend using the paid lockers available at the Sports Hub. Lockers near the stadium cost approximately $6 for 6 hours of use.
Q: Are there toilets and water coolers nearby?
A: Yes, the Sports Hub is well-equipped. There are water coolers and toilets accessible near the track.
Q: What happens if it rains?
A: We run on! The track is almost completely sheltered, so rain does not stop our session.

1\. Comfortable Clothing
• Moisture-wicking fabrics: Avoid cotton, as it traps moisture and causes chafing. Instead, choose clothing made from materials like polyester, nylon, or merino wool, which keep you dry.
• Comfortable socks: Opt for moisture-wicking socks with cushioning to reduce the risk of blisters.
2\. Proper Footwear
• Well-fitting shoes: Ensure your shoes are properly broken in and provide enough support, especially if you're walking long distances. Sturdy hiking or walking shoes with good arch support are ideal.
• Blister prevention: Consider blister-resistant socks or pack blister pads to address any discomfort before it becomes a problem.
3\. Hydration
• Water bottle: Stay hydrated throughout the walk to maintain energy levels and prevent dehydration.
4\. Snacks
• Energy bars or trail mix: Portable, nutrient-packed snacks high in carbohydrates and protein—perfect for refueling during breaks.
• Nuts or dried fruit: Easy to carry and great for providing long-lasting energy.
5\. Umbrella
• Umbrella: Bring one in case of rain to stay dry and comfortable\.
6\. Optional Gear
• Tissues or wet wipes: Handy for personal hygiene or cleaning your hands after eating or drinking.
7\. Small Backpack or Waist Pack

Walk & Talk About Life's Big Questions
[The Board Walks](http://www.theboardwalks.com/) are for curious people who love deep conversations.
If that sounds like you, **bring a thoughtful topic** and join us for a 5-mile walk (10,000+ steps!).
**HOW IT WORKS**
**Step 1: Bring a topic**
Before you arrive, think of **one** topic you want to explore. A question. A thought that's been on your mind. An obsession you want to geek out on. This is your ticket to the event.
**Step 2: Circle up & share**
We gather in a circle. Your friendly walk host gives a speech to set the tone. Everyone shares: your name, what you're grateful for, and your topic. That's it. 60 seconds.
**Step 3: Walk, talk & float**
We walk 5 miles. You naturally drift into conversation with 2-3 people at a time, pulled by topics that spark your curiosity. When you're ready to move on, just say: "I'm going to float!"
**Step 4: Feel more alive**
Two hours flies by. You're back where you started — but you feel different. More alive. More energized. More connected to yourself and others. That's why regulars join 20+ times.
*For more details, read our [Orientation Guide.](https://www.theboardwalks.com/orientation)*
**HOW TO BRING A GREAT TOPIC**
A great topic = something you're genuinely curious about.
Recent topics include:
* "What are you passionate about right now?"
* "What makes a good friend?"
* "What's a belief you used to hold that you've completely changed?"
* "How do you want to be remembered?"
* "What would you do if money wasn't a factor?"
Think of your topic like the dish you're bringing to our conversational potluck. If everyone brings an A+ dish (i.e. energizing, uplifting, expansive), we'll all walk away feeling lighter and brighter.
**WHAT TO EXPECT**
This isn't a fitness event with casual chitchat. It's a walking think tank where we explore life's big questions together, beyond small talk. *If you're looking for light banter or a standard networking event, this probably isn't the right fit.*
But if you crave depth, genuine connection, and conversations that make you feel alive? You'll love it here.
**FAQ**
* Wear casual athletic attire and sneakers. It's a long walk!
* We have multiple first-timers at each event. We work hard to create a welcoming, inclusive, clique-free space.
* We welcome people of **all** ages, backgrounds, and industries who align with the [intention](https://www.theboardwalks.com/ground-rules) of this space.
* Rain or shine, we've been out here nearly every week since July 2022. If the event is cancelled, we'll let you know.
* Dogs, babies in strollers, parents, and friends are welcome — please text/email them the event link so they can RSVP and prepare a topic!
**LOGISTICS**
* If you'll arrive over 10 minutes late, we suggest skipping the event. It's hard to find us once we start walking, and your host can't answer messages during the event.
* This walk is designed for everyone to *move together at the same steady pace* (about 20 min/mile). This format works best when the whole group moves in unison. If you have mobility limitations, we kindly encourage you to find an event better suited to your needs.
* Read our [Orientation Guide](https://www.theboardwalks.com/orientation) for full details.
* If you enjoy the event, send **[this](http://www.theboardwalks.com/)** to a friend or sign up for our **[newsletter](https://theboardwalks.beehiiv.com/)**. We're in multiple cities with more on the way. 🤠👋
**IF YOU WANT TO GO DEEPER...**
[The Board](https://stan.store/ellebeecher/p/the-board) is the next step: a high-trust collective for renaissance people devoted to creating, connecting, and building lives that light us up.
* This is a global HQ for people who crave big talk, deep connection, and dream collaborations with people across industries. If the walks feel like a spark... The Board is the fire. Apply [here](https://stan.store/ellebeecher/p/the-board).
Hike Blacklick Woods and The Canopy. Optional lunch after.
Over time I'm hoping to organize a hike to all the Franklin County Metro Parks. This is the first one so if you're interested jump in!
We'll start with the Canopy Walk, a cool feature of this park. Climb 100 stairs to the top - or take the elevator if stairs aren't your thing. At the top there are a bunch of things to play on - a rope bridge, a fireman pole that we can slide down - and more! About fifteen minutes there and we'll head to the natural trail, Buttonbush, Maple and Beech Trail for 2.2 miles then do a 1.7 mile loop on the paved Greenway Trail. We'll be passing our cars as we transition if you only want to do the first loop, or the second loop. Pace of around 3.5 mph but no one left behind.
If there is an interest we can grab lunch nearby afterward.
Griggs Reservoir Walk: Wyandot Park to Griggs Dam and Back
We'll meet at Wyandot Park, cross Riverside Dr at Lane Rd, then walk south along the water to Griggs Park and back — around 5 miles total.
A scenic out-and-back route along the Scioto River. One of the nicer stretches of trail in Columbus.
Parking is available at Wyandot Park, off Lane Rd.
Here's an overview of the route on Google Maps:
https://maps.app.goo.gl/uqweEoi6vcpY4esTA
See you there.
Hike Pickerington Ponds
We'll hike 3.4 miles on the Killdeer and Yellowlegs Trails - both out and back gravel trails. If we want more mileage we can repeat an out and back. Pace of around 3.5 mph, no one left behind and those who want to go faster sure can!
As always optional lunch after.
This is the second Metro Park in the lineup for me - with 21 to go (plus more are being added).
Alum Creek Trail Hike
Joins us for a 3 mile hike this Friday evening along the beautiful Alum Creek Trail. This fully paved trail is pretty flat and winds along Alum Creek. We will travel 1.5 miles south along the trail to a scenic bridge before turning around. Hope to see you Friday!
