Hardware Hacking Night
Want to mess with some electronics? Or perhaps contribute to HacDC's main group project?
HacDC's latest event brings hardware projects to the community. We will focus primarily on the main project (Space Blimp!) but please feel free to bring some of your own projects to show off and work on!
Building a Scanning Tunneling Microscope - PCB Circuit Redesign with CAD
***In Person Location:*** Rockville Library, second floor meeting room (Collaboration Room 3).
Will recreate our Preamp circuit board inside EasyEDA to make it shareable for others. This ideally will also allow us to finish up design enough to submit for a materials grant program.
We are experimenting with a new virtual join link - [https://meet.jit.si/mocomakers](https://meet.jit.si/mocomakers)
If you can make it in person, that's always recommended!
Let's resume repeated full end-to-end testing cycles and continue to iterate our design and resolution. We are getting close.
Our community is building (and documenting for other teams) how to build a scanning tunneling microscope using a mix of common and 3D printed parts. This will allow us to scan and visualize a single atom - an ambitious we are doing over the course of a few months.
The MoCo Makers community is one of the most innovative and competent groups in Maryland, and we've done everything from [publishing cancer research](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/38136356/), to [launching products](https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/gotim/cozy-curvy-multi-contour-pillow), [winning grants](https://covidinfocommons.datascience.columbia.edu/awards/2014255), and inspiring thousands.
Now our biggest challenge yet has appeared. We are building a Scanning Tunneling Microscope, that will allow us to scan and visualize single atoms.
Does it sound hard? Perhaps.. However! I have every confidence that we are now operating at a level were we can take on this mean, cross-functional project. We continue to build on our past successes, and a key technology we previously applied was increasing the signal of small voltages using OpAmps - which we did during our custom pH Probe project - [https://www.mocomakers.com/ph-probe/](https://www.mocomakers.com/ph-probe/) \- That technology is exactly what we need to get this machine working\, and at a high precision\!
To get a better idea of what we are doing, see our reference project here: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7N3OqTEq08g](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7N3OqTEq08g)
All starting CAD, code, and reference files should exist. However, let's be the first Maker community to document the build process and share it with learners around the world.
We have a bit over $2,000 in materials costs, so if you want to sponsor this project, and get banners at events with 20K attendees, and access to our email broadcast of 30K members, please contact matt@mocomakers.com
We are also open to university, lab, or community partnerships so feel to reach out if you want to be part of this project.
Together, we can do incredible things.

DC Metro Crafts @ Merry Pin (Georgia Ave NW)
Let's take another field trip out of SW.
[Merry Pin](https://www.merrypindc.com/) at 7350 Georgia Ave., NW is kindly allowing us to crash their monthly Sip and Stitch, where we can indulge in adult drinks and light snacks as we craft. And as well-situated as the library is, the atmosphere is rather austere whereas Merry Pin is.... merry. And crafty.
Their event starts at 5:30pm but they're open until 9 so don't feel pressured to get there early. I intend to get to Georgia Ave-Petworth station around 5-5:15 and make a judgment call about taking the D40 for 20 minutes up Georgia ave or a lyft/uber for a 15 minute ride. Depending on how many of us make it at 5 (I know it's early), I might just pay for a car and make all of our lives easier.
If you rsvp and want to meet me at the station, please leave a message in the comments so I know to look for you.
Note: The crafting area is up a flight of stairs if that poses any issues.
The Central Maryland Rock and Mineral Collectors Exchange Monthly Meetup
**CMRMCE** meetup
Meetings start at 7 pm
Meeting address:
6425 Abel St
Elkridge MD 21075
Our meetings are always free and open to everyone.
Our meetings are informal, and we tend to discuss whatever anyone has brought with them to show as well. We also discuss local rockhounding ideas.
Even though we usually plan to wrap up around 9 pm, most of us are usually still chatting at 10. It is amazing the amount of knowledge that we share with each other and the body of knowledge that we have as a group. All of our meetings have been great (even when only a few show up).
I do ask that you RSVP for our meeting, but... if you haven’t RSVP'd and would still like to come to the meeting – please do. The RSVP helps the meeting by showing others that we do have a group and that there will be a meeting that night. If you RSVP’d yes and can’t make it, that’s OK too (you can always change your RSVP at any time).
I hope that you will consider attending (newbie or Guru). Our group has been meeting for over 10 years now. We have over 350 total members and we’ve maintained a 5-star rating for our meetings. I believe that you will enjoy yourself and we will enjoy your company as well.
As always, everyone is invited to our meetings (including your non-Rockhound guests). Our meeting size averages about 4 to 9 members per meeting, but we have had as many as 14 attend.
I hope you can make it, we are very informal, and if you can, bring something (rocks, fossils, **yard rock**, book, map, or **whatever**) that you would like to discuss.
I truly look forward to meeting you.

Potential Applications of Negative Radiation Pressure and 2WQC
Title: Potential Applications of Negative Radiation Pressure in Astronomy, Medicine and 2WQC
Date: April 19 2026 10:00 am - Noon EDT (16:00 - 18:00 CET)
Abstract: While we are used to heating and pushing with light, there is also optical cooling and pulling. I will talk about negative radiation pressure,
potential ways to generate it, and its novel applications, like non-ionizing medical scanners, 2WQC (two-way quantum computers)
in theory solving NP problems, also potential astronomical sources and their observation.
Speaker: Dr Jarek Duda is an assistant professor at Jagiellonian University. He holds degrees in computer science (PhD), mathematics (MSc)
and physics (PhD). He is mainly focused on physics foundations, information theory, statistical analysis, and is known for introduction of asymmetric
numeral systems.
DC Emancipation Day Celebration
Spring into celebration and let freedom ring in the nation's capital! DC Emancipation Day 2026 will be celebrated on Sunday, April 19, 2026, with a festival at Franklin Park featuring a parade and concert, honoring the 21st anniversary of the official city holiday. The celebration marks the April 16, 1862, signing of the Compensated Emancipation Act, which freed over 3,100 enslaved people in Washington, D.C. It is this legislation, and the courage and struggle of those who fought to make it a reality, that we commemorate every DC Emancipation Day.
This year's celebration will be marked with a parade, concert, and much more!
HOW TO GET THERE
To get to Franklin Park (1332 I St NW) using the Metrorail, your best bet is to head to McPherson Square, located on the Silver, Blue, and Orange Lines. It's the closest station, located just a block away at 14th and I St NW. Exit from the 14th and I St NW side.
Due to the expense and difficulty of driving and parking in DC, taking the Metro is highly recommended.
WHERE TO MEET
We will meet outside the 14th and I St NW exit of McPherson Square.
NOTE: It may be crowded and noisy. It will be outdoors. Please plan accordingly for any sensory or mobility issues and dress for the weather. If the weather calls for heavy rain and/or thunderstorms, I will cancel this event.
See you soon,
Jenny

Prompt vs. Paintbrush
AI is changing how art is made. But when does it stop being your work and start being the machine’s?
This month we're going to be doing a panel with with digital image, music, and written word artists, talking about at what point, while using AI in the creation process, does the work become not the artist creation?
We encourage audience participation during this event that will be moderated by Chris Slee.
Whether you’re deep in the field or just getting curious, come connect with others building and exploring AI in Columbus.

Free in-person event: Take Control of Your Mental Health
It’s time to take control of your mental health. How do you get rid of stress, anxiety and uncertainty? These emotions are buried deep in your reactive mind. Find out what the reactive mind is, and in the process find yourself.
Have you ever suffered from a traumatic experience, a deep loss or been through a painful breakup? Has your ability to communicate suffered as a result? And after that, even though you "moved on" did you find that things were never quite the same? Have you ever looked at childhood photos, or reminisced your early life and wondered where that happiness and spark went?
Are your emotions out of your own control? Have you ever felt, even if you aren’t aware of it, that possibly you are getting in your own way of your happiness and success? How does this affect your self-confidence?
Find out what is at the root of all stress, anxiety, depression and self-doubt. Find out how and why you hold yourself back from achieving your goals and having the life you have dreamed of. As soon as you learn what is at the root of these unwanted conditions, you’ll see it is something you can DO something about. You will not be labeled or categorized at this MeetUp.
