East Bay Waltz - May Prom!

East Bay Waltz - May Prom!

Sat, May 16, 11:00 PM
From East Bay Waltz Meetup Group

# The next dance is Saturday, May 16th. It's waltz prom! **Introductory Nightclub 2-Step: 4-5:30 p.m.** **Introductory Rotary Waltz: 5:30-7 p.m.** **Social Dancing: 7-10 p.m.** **$10-20 sliding scale (or pay what you can). Cash or Venmo only.** It's prom time! Whether you're excited to be wearing your favorite cummerbund or satin dress, or just to dance like you are, or both, come celebrate with us! (Prom attire is awesome but not required; staying on the sidelines too nervous to ask someone to dance is classic but not as much fun; everyone's welcome regardless of what grade they're in or even if they even go here.) The first class **(from 4-5:30 p.m.)** will be an introduction to Nightclub Two-Step, a dance that's perfect for those slow pop prom favorite hit songs. Ken C teaches. The introductory class **(from 5:30-7 p.m.)** will be on [rotary waltz,](https://www.libraryofdance.org/dances/waltz/) which is so important that it's usually just called "the waltz." No experience or partner necessary! Half of the dance party is waltzes and this "beginner lesson" is great for anyone who doesn't yet feel confident in 3/4, even if you've taken a lesson before. Jordan A teaches. And then, it's our social dance party **(from 7-10 p.m.)** with Caroline V and Jay C spinning our mix of mostly waltzes, plus some polka, swing, latin, two-step, and more -- this time with more of a disco ball and punch bowl vibe. As always, EBW is a come-as-you-are, all ages, gender neutral, no-partner-required, ask anyone to dance event where we value consent and everyone is welcome. Feel like **volunteering?** We are always looking for people to help out by sitting a door shift. In return for your time greeting peoples and handling moneys, you'll get in for free. [Sign up here](https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSe1PtYdNH4Ic-QWsbP-RMrYCPED1n6IUSR1z3pla_jg3amNxw/viewform) (even if you've volunteered before, so we know to expect you this time.) **Special Notes:** Please wear **non-marking shoes** to the event, or dance shoes if you have them! We've been getting black scuff marks on the newly-refinished floor of the Finnish Hall, and some of them don't scrub off. Thanks! In addition, we and many dancers will appreciate it if you can **reduce or eliminate heavy perfumes/colognes or other scents.** Please be mindful of those with sensitivities or allergies! Thanks again! # COVID-19 Policy **If you have symptoms or believe you are sick, please stay home.** This is basic dance courtesy for all contagious diseases, not just Covid-19. Besides, attending a dance while sick isn't very fun, and won't be appreciated by the other dancers. It is much better to stay home, rest, recover, and come back and have fun with us the following month. **Mask wearing and vaccinations are optional.** We will not be checking vaccination records nor requiring masks in the ballroom. We do require all attendees to respect other dancers, including their choice of masking. All dancing at EBW is strictly voluntary, and anyone can refuse a dance for any reason, but ridiculing or badmouthing others is not allowed. EBW staff will keep the windows and doors open to the extent possible. **Do not close outside windows or doors without checking with us.**

Come Sing Show Tunes!

Come Sing Show Tunes!

Thu, May 28, 2:15 AM
From Berkeley Broadway Musicals Singing Group (In Person)
4.9

This event consists of an informal concert in which the performers are all of us! We'll take turns singing Broadway show tunes. All musical levels are welcome, whether you're an aspiring musical theater star or just someone who belts out show tunes in the shower. If you feel shy about singing a solo, it's okay to come and listen. We'll also do some group singing. Please think ahead and pick one or two solos you'd enjoy singing (this is not a firm commitment, you can change your mind if you get the jitters). Depending on how many people choose to sing, you'll either get to sing one or both of your songs. We don't always have an accompanist, so after you pick your songs, please search for suitable accompaniments on YouTube (you can search for "Songname karaoke" or "Songname accompaniment"). Once you've found accompaniments you like, please add links for your accompaniments to this spreadsheet so we can have them ready to play at the gathering: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1ftn_81hdqtmYb8_QlKhpyzlu4FwKDDRZGZ3YT2x8qc8/edit?gid=0#gid=0 In the second hour of the gathering we'll schmooze and do more informal singing, and eat snacks -- (optional) feel free to bring a snack to share. For covid safety, please don't attend if you or a household member have ANY cold or flu symptoms, or if you were recently exposed to covid or flu. We will have open windows and air purifiers running.

From Django to Tango (Sold Out!)

From Django to Tango (Sold Out!)

Sat, May 30, 2:00 AM
From Live Jazz (& Blues) Meetup Group
4.8

This event at a favorite Meetup venue features Grammy-winning violinist Mads Tolling, Grammy-nominated accordionist-pianist Sam Reider, and acclaimed bassist Sam Bevan in a performance of classic and original pieces that draw on rhythms ranging from Argentine tango to Django Reinhardt’s jazz manouche (aka "gypsy" jazz) and beyond. EVENT COST: The show costs about $42 (with Eventbrite service fee) for concert tickets when bought online. **I am posting this event earlier than usual, because it is assigned seating, and because I think it will sell out.** Some central tables have already filled up. SEATING: This show is **ASSIGNED** seating, mainly at four-person tables. ***NOTE that I will be sitting at Table Twelve Seat B.*** If possible, please buy your tickets for seats at the same table or adjoining tables. **TICKET LINK and MORE SHOW INFO**: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/mads-tolling-sam-reider-django-to-tango-tickets-1985736138244?aff=oddtdtcreator *Click on the **Buy on Map** button on the above Eventbrite page to select your table and seat number. Note that this event is on a FRIDAY night.* WHEN/WHERE TO MEET: I recommend arriving at the Sound Room by about 7:00 p.m. so you have more time to socialize with your fellow Meetup members, and possibly order any food or drinks you want for yourself. (The show starts shortly after 7:30 p.m. and will go to at least 10:00 p.m. There are typically two sets with one intermission at this venue.) HOW TO FIND ME: I'll email my cellphone number and final details to RSVPers prior to the event date. Also, you can see my photo with my Meetup profile. (I'm WF, about 5 feet tall, now with glasses and short, salt-&-pepper hair.) LOCATION/TRANSIT: The Sound Room is at 3022 Broadway (directly across from Sprouts). At least one AC Transit bus line goes to the Sound Room from Oakland BART stations, and possibly ones in El Cerrito and Richmond. (The closest Oakland BART stations are at 19th Street and in Rockridge.) PARKING: Free parking is available on Broadway and on side streets. There are also supervised parking lots at Summit Medical Center and Kaiser Medical Center – both of which are 2 blocks away – that are available for a fee. FOOD OPTION: The Sound Room has a limited but good menu of small plates (entrees, appetizers, and desserts) and drinks that you can enjoy before or during the show. The venue emails RSVPers the current menu on the day of the show. (There is no minimum requirement for ordering food or drink, but these purchases help cover this nonprofit's operating costs.)
