East Bay Chronic Pain & Illness Peer Support Group Meetup

**About us:** The Bay Area Chronic Pain & Illness Peer Support Group is a friendly, unstructured, in-person peer support group for anybody 18+ who lives with chronic pain, illness(es), invisible disabilities, and any type of mental health experiences. The group is a casual safe space to hang out, talk about our lives, share coping strategies, form friendships, create community, and get support. **Location:** 2727 California Street, Berkeley, CA 94703 Look for a corner gallery in a residential neighborhood! **Accessibility Info:** * The meeting space is in a wheelchair accessible gallery. * There are bathrooms accessible via ramp within the gallery. * The lighting is relatively gentle, though of course feel free to bring hats, sunglasses to adjust! * Seating provided by the gallery are wooden, foldout chairs. If a metal foldout chair would be preferable, let me know, and I'll try to procure some! * Feel free to bring heating pads, yoga mats, cooling pads, to make yourself as comfortable as possible! \*\*\*Please refrain from wearing anything scented, including lotion, dry-cleaned clothes, etc. This is to ensure that the group is safe for people with chemical sensitivities.\*\*\* **Scheduling Info: While this group runs every other week, there are a few dates when the space will not be available. Laser Cutter Safety Training

Learn how to be safe while using the laser cutter! We have a 150W, CO2 laser cutter with a 3 x 4 ft bed. This training is required to use the laser cutter because we don't want people setting our most expensive equipment donation on fire. You have to do this training even if you were trained at the old space, as we have different safety features now. Training covers * Dangers of the laser cutter * How to be safe * How to put out a fire Each participant will cut a piece of cardboard on the laser cutter while following all the safety steps. This is also a good place to ask questions about specific materials or projects. There is a 5$ fee to register, and we suggest a 20-30$ donation for this class: https://donate.noisebridge.net. Volleyball. Training and Playing.

Whether you’re starting out or looking for a place to play, you’ve landed in the right place.
You’re going to meet people who are going to help you get better as well as those who will become long time playing buddies. 
You’ll have an opportunity to learn how to get better the fastest way possible - ask me how!😊
Join us whether it’s for training, tournaments, or open play! 
You may come regularly or every now and then. Play for hours or a short while. You will find volleyball joy that will brighten your weekend or even change your life! 
There is no need to RSVP. There will be 20-30+ players. Training starts at 9:00 with open play around 10:00. Improve in one or all of these areas - physical, technical, or mental. Bring what you would normally bring to the beach for a four hour stay. There is a bathroom across the street at the Beach Chalet which opens at 10:00. There are also bathrooms at the Beach Chalet sports field which is a six minute walk or at Safeway which is a five minute walk. The city usually parks a portable two-toilet accommodation in the parking lot. 
The equipment and all fees associated with putting on this event including creating this MeetUp group are funded by me. My intent is to make this event readily available and affordable.

[Profs and Pints San Francisco](https://www.profsandpints.com/sfbayarea) presents: **“How Money Shapes Minds,”** a research-based examination of how money alters our thought processes and behavior, with Daniel E. Martin, associate professor of management at CSU East Bay and director of Corporate Compassion Education at Stanford University’s Center for Compassion, Altruism Research and Education. It quietly changes how we think, how we relate to others, and how we relate to and use power. Psychology, epidemiology, history, and ancient wisdom all converge on this conclusion: the more power and money we have, the less compassion we feel for others—unless, that is, such compassion is intentionally cultivated. Gain insights into how money influences our behavior—and how we can keep growing wealth from shrinking our heart—with Daniel Martin, who directs Corporate Compassion Education at a Stanford University center focused on understanding the neural, mental, and social bases of compassion and altruism. He’ll discuss why wealth so often reduces compassion rather than increasing it, and how the use of power changes as wealth grows. We’ll look at how inequality changes moral judgment and political tolerance for suffering, and whether compassion can be trained in leaders and institutions in ways that measurably change behavior. Drawing from experimental research in social psychology and other fields, we’ll explore how merely thinking about money increases self-focus, reduces helping, and weakens empathy—effects that don’t stop at individuals but scale up into teams, organizations, and entire societies. We’ll look at evidence showing that higher social class predicts lower empathic accuracy, greater entitlement, and more tolerance for unethical behavior, while inequality itself erodes trust, generosity, and concern for suffering at all levels. These patterns help explain why large systems so often become indifferent to harm, even when the people being hurt by them believe they are acting rationally or fairly. We’ll look at what great thinkers such as Plato, Rumi, Aristotle, the Buddha, the Vedas, Zoroaster, and Lao Tzu have to say on the matter.
