The People Problems No Founder Sees Coming
The People Problems No Founder Sees Coming
Date: Tuesday 16th June, 6:15-9 PM UK Time Location: [1 Warwick by Maslow’s](https://share.google/MnxwD6w1PqaJ512K6) [Sign up for this event here!](https://founders500.com/session/startup-session-15-the-people-problems-no-founder-sees-coming/) Please note that clicking attend on Meetup will not give you the correct QR code to enter this event. Please sign up for your Universe ticket using the correct link. ### Most founders think scaling is a hiring problem. It’s not, it’s a people problem. Building and scaling a startup is hard, but turning it into an organisation is where things really start to break. At around 15 to 30 people, what once felt easy suddenly becomes more complex. Communication slows down, expectations become unclear, performance becomes inconsistent, and founders often find themselves stuck in the middle of everything. Many assume it’s a hiring issue, but in reality it runs deeper. In this interactive session, we’ll unpack the people challenges founders don’t see coming as they scale, brought to life through real stories, honest reflections, and practical insight from working inside growing organisations. Through a conversational, interview-style format, we’ll explore five of the most common areas where founders underinvest early, and the impact this has as their companies grow. This isn’t a lecture. It’s an opportunity to step back, reflect on your own business, learn from others in the room, and leave with practical ideas you can apply immediately, whether you are just starting to build a team or already navigating the pressures of growth. ## About the Speakers: **Katherine Ray** Katherine works with founders and senior leaders to identify what actually needs to change in their leadership and people approach before it becomes costly as they scale. With over 20 years’ experience across early-stage, scaling businesses and large global organisations, she brings a broad and grounded perspective on how people and leadership challenges show up at different stages of growth. As an executive leadership coach, Katherine focuses on helping leaders build the clarity, capability, and confidence needed to lead effectively as their organisations evolve, while enabling teams to perform during periods of growth, change, and increasing complexity. **Kuldish Sibia** Kuldish is a fractional People leader and founder of Scaling People Solutions, with over 20 years of experience across global organisations, scale-ups, and high-growth environments. He specialises in helping businesses put the right people foundations in place before growth exposes the cracks. From performance challenges to complex people issues, Kuldish brings a practical, no-nonsense perspective on what happens when early decisions start to catch up, and what it takes to fix them. ## What to Expect on the Night: Doors open at 6:15 PM with a welcome drink and networking. Starting at 6:45 PM, this 75-minute interactive session including Q&A will include: **Real Stories and Insights (Interview Format)** We’ll explore five key people challenges founders face as they scale, including: * Creating clarity on roles and expectations * Investing in people management including performance, feedback, and accountability * Workforce planning, who you hire, when, and why * How leadership needs to evolve as your company grows * Building foundations before tools Each theme will be brought to life through real examples and honest reflections from working with scaling businesses. **Founder-to-Founder Discussion** You’ll have the opportunity to reflect on one of the five key challenges that resonates most with you or is most relevant to your business right now. Through guided prompts, you’ll explore: * What’s currently feeling difficult in your organisation * How this challenge is showing up as you scale * What you might need to do differently **Q&A** A chance to ask questions and explore specific challenges you’re facing. **Community and Connection** From 8:00 PM, connect with fellow founders, operators, and builders in a relaxed setting designed for meaningful conversation. You’ll also have the opportunity to speak with Katherine and Kuldish one-to-one about any specific people or organisational challenges you’re currently navigating. Doors close at 9:00 PM. ## Who Should Attend: * Founders and co-founders building and scaling a team * Leaders in growing companies where things are starting to feel more complex than they should * Anyone hiring, managing people, and noticing that what worked early on is no longer working This session is particularly relevant for companies moving beyond the early stage, around 10 to 50 plus people, where people challenges become more visible and more impactful. [Sign up for this event here!](https://founders500.com/session/startup-session-15-the-people-problems-no-founder-sees-coming/) Please note that clicking attend on Meetup will not give you the correct QR code to enter this event. There's no shortage of advice for moving from senior engineer to tech lead or engineering manager, yet the step up to senior leadership remains rarely documented. It's also the point when your day to day will likely change most significantly from previous roles. This talk is the resource I wish I'd had. I'll walk through the five biggest shifts you'll encounter when moving from managing a single team to leading multiple teams and workstreams: where intentional time management becomes non-negotiable, why "disagree and commit" hits differently at this level, how organisational politics become unavoidable, why you'll need a crash course in product, marketing and finance, and why getting your team right is the foundation for everything else. For each area I'll share practical tips from my own experience, followed by honest advice on how to assess whether this transition is right for you — and how to prepare when the time comes. Whether you're actively considering a move into senior leadership or simply curious about what could lie ahead, this talk will give you an honest, grounded picture of what the role actually demands. **Extreme Curiosity: The solution to all of AI's challenges - Andy Huang, Technical Lead at Softwire** The impact that agentic AI tooling has had on the industry is undeniable, destroying barriers-to-entry and producing immeasurable levels of output. Working applications can be created by non-coders in a matter of minutes in a chat window, and unmanageable numbers of pull requests, issues, and vulnerabilities are demanding the attention of engineers. How does the unrelenting drive to explore digressive questions help us thrive where AI would otherwise threaten our very existence? **Certainty is an illusion - Mary Gudman, Senior Engineering Manager at ENSEK** Most engineering leaders have been here: the company is restructuring, the strategy is shifting, and your team is looking to you for answers you don't have. The instinct is either to project confidence you don't feel, or to be radically transparent in a way that destabilises everyone around you. Neither works. Leading through uncertainty when you're uncertain too is a skill. It can be learned. This is what learning it looked like for me. 🔹 **CODE OF CONDUCT** 🔹 As with our conferences, LeadDev Meetups are a safe and inclusive event for all. By attending, you agree to our **[code of conduct](https://leaddev.com/code-conduct)**. 🔸 **SLACK COMMUNITY** 🔸 You can also join our **[Slack workspace](https://theleaddeveloper.slack.com/)** to keep up with everything in our London community. London Java Community Unconference 2026
**Please register on [Eventbrite](https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/1989306131189?aff=oddtdtcreator) to join this event:** **About the event:** The LJC is delighted to announce our 20th Unconference! Join us for a full day of discussions, knowledge sharing, learning, and networking with other developers in the industry. There will be an opening keynote session followed by breakout discussion groups on the topics which are important to you. Catering is of course included, with a steady stream of coffee as well as breakfast on arrival, lunch and even afternoon tea. **Keynote Speaker:** **Emily Jiang**, STSM, Cloud Native Architect & Advocate, IBM Unlock the performance and cost savings of modern Java without the massive manual effort. Many companies are hindered by the overwhelming complexity of modernization due to the variety of legacy enterprise Java applications they still need to maintain. Discover how modern approaches provide powerful automated solutions. In this talk, we'll deconstruct a real-life success story: modernizing a legacy monolith to a modern runtime and newer version of Java. Learn how to automatically transform your codebase, mitigate the risks of manual error, and accelerate your path to the cloud. See practical steps you can use to breathe new life into your applications and free your teams to build for the future with the help of IBM Bob. **What is an Unconference?** An unconference is a loosely structured, participant-driven meeting. You decide what you want to talk and hear about and which topics you want to discuss. It starts with an empty schedule - no topics are mandated and no separations are made between speakers and the audience. All participants work out a schedule by suggesting, planning, holding, and evaluating sessions, collaboratively. Above all else, it's great fun, whether you want to learn or share it's a supportive and safe space to do it in. Rock the Docs: Applying music theory and band dynamics to technical writing
Rock the Docs: Applying music theory and band dynamics to technical writing
The discotheque gets disco-technical at **Rock The Docs**! This double headline bill sees **[Marco Spinello](https://www.linkedin.com/in/marco-spinello/)**, Technical Writer at [Booking.com](http://booking.com/) showing us how music theory can be applied to documentation, using examples from both his professional and creative life. Following this act, **[Jerry Bartlett](https://www.linkedin.com/in/jerry-bartlett-content-pro-tech/)**, founder and principal at [Content Pro Tech](https://www.contentprotech.com/) will demonstrate how the fundamentals of technical writing can be applied to gathering and organising metadata for digital music libraries. These presentations will cover: *Why Git is like a metronome - Why managing stakeholders is not unlike managing band members *Why recording an album is not unlike delivering an MVP - How metadata underpins the algorithms of streaming services *How curating metadata is a key aspect of technical writing work - The difference between descriptive metadata and management metadata **Marco Spinello** tells the story of a disco band that shrank from eight members to a power trio, not unlike a company reorganisation with a built-in product pivot. Music and technical writing have more in common than meets the eye; music theory maps the territory like information architecture, a metronome enforces discipline like git, and song dynamics prevent the "wall of text" effect of very long, very dense docs. **Jerry Bartlett** discusses how uploading his music collection to a NAS drive found him drawing on skills honed during his day job as a technical communicator, and working on striking a balance between the right level of granularity, while making sure to not have ‘too much’ metadata. This event is kindly hosted by [Wise](https://wise.com/). **📅Agenda** **When:** Thursday, 18 June, from 6:30pm **Where:** Wise, 65 Clifton Street, London EC2A 4JE **What:** **18:30 - 19:00** Arrival **19:00 - 19:15** Welcome & Housekeeping **19:15 - 19:20** Short introduction to Wise **19:30 - 20:00** Rocks the Docs by Marco Spinello **20:00 - 20:30** Jerry's presentation **20:30 - 21:00** Networking **📍How to find us**: Please head to Wise, 65 Clifton Street, London EC2A 4JE, from 6:30pm onwards -- one of the friendly Write The Docs London team will be checking guests in. 🌎 **Google Maps**: [https://maps.app.goo.gl/r6zdmeDKhyAbLbaf7](https://maps.app.goo.gl/r6zdmeDKhyAbLbaf7) 📜 **What3Words**: [///lift.send.curiosity](https://what3words.com/lift.send.curiosity) 📷 **Photos:** Please note that the organisers may take some photos for the WTD group.

Smart Search + AI: An Outcome-Driven Journey from IDP to a Suite of AI
Over a billion documents processed. Millions of Veterans impacted. Hundreds of thousands of employee hours saved. Faster decisions. Greater accuracy. More benefits in the hands of our disabled Veterans. We created Smart Search, the world’s largest consumer of Amazon Textract, right when GenAI began reshaping what’s possible. Since then, we’ve built a suite of AI‑driven solutions that transform this data into real, measurable outcomes—accelerating benefits decisions for our Nation’s Veterans. Join us for a focused conversation on how an outcome‑driven approach to AI is helping us boost accuracy, streamline workflows, and deliver faster results for those who have served. This is a follow up to the AWS re:Invent 2023 "Intelligent Document Processing with Gen AI for Public Sector" presentation. About Speaker: Cameron Williams is a Senior Technical Project Manager and cross-functional technical leader at Booz Allen Hamilton with 15+ years of experience architecting and evolving scalable, cloud-native systems, from greenfield development to complex enterprise modernization. https://www.linkedin.com/in/cameronw711/ **THANK YOU** *Franklin University* for hosting our meetup! Extensions allow developers to customize the editor with new features, integrations, and workflow improvements tailored to their needs. In this session, we’ll cover what extensions are and the different types available, including full extensions written in TypeScript or JavaScript, along with lighter-weight extensions such as color themes, language packs, language support, code snippets, and keymaps. We’ll also look at practical reasons a developer might create an extension, from automating repetitive tasks to adding custom tooling. The session includes a hands-on walkthrough of creating a new extension, testing it locally, and understanding the basic project structure. We’ll close with a brief overview of how extensions are packaged and published to the Visual Studio Marketplace and other distribution options. **YouTube Link** TBD
