A quick note to say that if you would like to help me with the running costs of the book group, you can give a small contribution via Ko-fi: [https://ko-fi.com/annabookgroup](https://ko-fi.com/annabookgroup) Thank you to everyone who helped me with the Meetup fees in 2025! We will meet from 6:30 onwards at the pub and go to the room upstairs between 6:30 and 7:00. Please check with the bar staff before going up that the room is ready and please don't go up before our start time. We will start the discussion at around 7:00pm and talk about the book for an hour or so before having a break. Then we can vote on next month's book. If you have any suggestions for short (or shortish) books for the next shortlist, please message me ahead of time. It's honestly the most fun we've had and I'm inviting everyone of you because something's been happening for a while now and you just don't know about it...It's a Showcase of some of the Best London bands playing their music in London - and it's also a MEETUP group, so you can watch the gig with a mix of regular members and newcomers. Feel free to come on your own or bring your friends and meet new people. Look for the 'MEETUP SIGN' or ask the Host on the Door when you arrive. It's an awesome line-up and at one of the Top Venues in London - Great place for a beer, meet new people and see some amazing unsigned bands! 🔥🔥🚒🍻 \* ‼️ THE ULTIMATE LONDON GIG MEETUP! ‼️ \* There aren't enough emojis for this, so I'll keep it simple: BE THERE. Whatever it takes, she won't want miss it 😄🍻 \* WHATSAPP GROUP: We're a friendly mix; English, French, Australian, Portuguese, Italian, Spanish and Japanese people so I'm sure you will meet someone that shares a passion for Rocking Music. Nonfiction Bookclub: The Wretched of the Earth by Frantz Fanon
**Let's meet to discuss The Wretched of the Earth by Frantz Fanon over a pint (or several...). New members of all ages always welcome!** 'This century's most compelling theorist of racism and colonialism' - Angela Davis Written at the height of the Algerian war for independence from French colonial rule and first published in 1961, Frantz Fanon's Wretched of the Earth has provided inspiration for anti-colonial movements ever since, analysing the role of class, race, national culture and violence in the struggle for freedom. With power and anger, Fanon makes clear the economic and psychological degradation inflicted by imperialism. It was Fanon, himself a psychotherapist, who exposed the connection between colonial war and mental disease, who showed how the fight for freedom must be combined with building a national culture, and who showed the way ahead, through revolutionary violence, to socialism. 'In clear language, in words that can only have been written in the cool heat of rage, he showed us the internal theatre of racism' - Deborah Levy

All Out of Bubblegum Film Club 142 / Who Framed Roger Rabbit
Who Framed Roger Rabbit is a 1988 American fantasy comedy film directed by Robert Zemeckis from a screenplay written by Jeffrey Price and Peter S. Seaman. Combining live-action and animation, it is loosely based on Gary K. Wolf's novel, Who Censored Roger Rabbit?. The film stars Bob Hoskins, Christopher Lloyd, Stubby Kaye and Joanna Cassidy, with Charles Fleischer providing the voice of the title character. Set in an alternative history Hollywood in 1947, where humans and cartoon characters (referred to as "toons") co-exist, Who Framed Roger Rabbit follows Eddie Valiant, a private investigator with a grudge against toons, who must help exonerate Roger, who has been framed for murder. The film received critical acclaim for its visuals, humour, writing, performances and ground breaking combination of live-action and animation. It won three Academy Awards for Best Film Editing, Best Sound Effects Editing and Best Visual Effects and received a Special Achievement Academy Award for Williams' animation direction. In 2016, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant." Please note we will not be showing the film at the meeting. Make sure you watch the film before you attend and then come and join in with the conversation. It’s just a discussion. It’s not a screening. We will be meeting in The Ludski Bar in the Rio Cinema. Stalker
Stalker
Based on the novel Roadside Picnic, it is NO picnic, but rather one of the masterpieces of world cinema. Andrei Tarkovsky's 1979 Soviet sci-fi classic, recounts the expedition of a writer and professor led by a mysterious guide called "The Stalker." to a futuristic wasteland called "The Zone." Dripping with existential dread, it continually presents strange occurrences that will have us debating the meaning of what we've just viewed right through the ending. *Stalker* (1979) can be streamed for free on HBOMax, the Criterion Channel or Kanopy. It's also available for rent on Amazon Prime and AppleTV. The Columbus Library has two copies on disc.
