Join us for an exciting evening of Chinese Mahjong, where players of all skill levles are invited to come together for fun, laughter, and friendly competition! **Please bring $5 to play!**
Whether you're a seasoned pro or a curious beginner, this event is designed to foster a welcoming atmosphere where everyone can learn, play and enjoy the timeless game of Mahjong.
**Game plan**
Each attendee needs to bring $5 cash to play.
**$1 per game:** Each player will contribute a dollar for every game we play. Don't worry; the winner gets to keep their dollar!
**$3 per game for Wright to Read:** The remaining $3 from each game will go into our collection jar. At the end of the year, we'll donate these funds to **Wright to Read** which has been providing services in the city of Alexandria for over 45 years. Wright to Read recruits, trains, and supports volunteer tutor-mentors who support elementary-aged children enrolled in ACPS who have been identified as needing additional support in reading. When entering submissions, please consider the following guidelines:
1\. Keep submissions to approximately 2\,000 words\, maximum
2\. Consider adding a brief Author's Note to introduce your work and let us know what kind of feedback you are looking for
3\. Please ensure that your submission is appropriate for a general audience and include trigger warnings as necessary
4\. Try to post your submission by Saturday or Sunday at the latest so that people have time to read it before the event\.
If you are coming to participate in Workshop, please read the submissions in the folder by Monday evening and prepare your feedback! We will aim to discuss each piece in the submission folder, although some pieces may be pushed to the following workshop if time runs short. Feel free to add your notes as comments on the document itself, write them up in a separate file, or jot them down so that you can provide them to the writer.
Books and Chill
Everyone’s heard of book clubs where the group reads the same thing and gets together to discuss, which is great… if you have time and interest in whatever’s chosen. This is a different type of book club where you bring whatever you’re currently or recently reading (or just a book you’re super excited about) and talk about it with fellow book lovers.
We’ll start with people arriving/ordering food between 615-645, then go around and introduce ourselveslves and give a very brief synopsis of what we’re reading and why we’re excited (or not!) about it. Then devolve into informal conversations until people need to head out.
The goal Is to create community and connections in a group of strangers - to facilitate this please make sure you have at least a clear first name on your profile.
Upside on Moore has a great selection of food you can order from your phone or at the kiosks. There’s also a bar with happy hour, something for everyone!
Arrival tips: if you’re taking the metro, it’s the building above the Rosslyn exit. If you’re driving, you can park in the public lot under the food hall (entrance from the one way bus street) and validate parking after 6!

Join [Team VSDC](https://www.classy.org/team/811995) as we support the [Poplar Spring Animal Sanctuary Annual 5K Run for the Animals and 1-Mile Fun Walk ](https://www.animalsanctuary.org/events/)on Sunday, May 17th. All funds raised will go towards [Poplar Spring's](https://www.animalsanctuary.org/) lifesaving work every day. The funds will care for and feed the farm animals who live at Poplar Spring and educate the public about compassion towards all animals. The VSDC has been a participant in this event for many years.

Vienna Writer's Group
Attention Vienna and Vienna-adjacent writers! Let's carve out a lil' bit of time each week for our passion at a cool place with good creative vibes: Caffe Amouri. I would like this group to focus on getting our creative work done, with a bit of socializing and shop talk thrown in too. We will carve out a little bit of time for critique also -- but that won't be the main focus (I find that when people feel obligated to read and critique they tend to blow off meetings if they haven't had time to read). Together we can set goals for helping each other (will set up some sort of Google doc upload system for those who want direct feedback). This is the very first meeting -- a "pilot episode" if you will -- to see if there's interest, so if you are interested, make sure ya show up!
