Charity Treasure Dive with Aquatic Adventures
**What:** Aquatic Adventures is doing their annual charity treasure dive which is always a fun filled day of meeting dive buddies new and old, a BBQ lunch, and of course diving for a token that could snag you anything from a hat to a week long live-a-board trip in the Bahamas. So how does this work? Aquatic Adventures sends staff down to tie tokens to various objects under the water at the lake. It could be a tree, a boat, bus, helicopter or other object. Tokens are distributed at various depths so all can participate, no matter if you are advance or a newbie. All divers should take only one token, Unfound tokens are auctioned off. Then prizes are drawn for each number, and there is a prize for each number (everyone is a winner), While some are small, fun prizes like a hat. Others can be equipment (I have seen regulators before). It appears that this year's big prize is a Live-a-Board trip in the Bahamas. I have done this several times with Aquatic Adventures and it has always been a great day of diving and camaraderie. This year I will be leading the club trip to the Caymans starting on this day, so I'll miss it, but Aquatic Adventures will take great care of you. **Where:** Lake Phoenix, 1 Quarry Ln, Rawlings, VA 23876 You need to follow the link to register with and pay Aquatic Adventures. If you have trouble with the link, go directly to their web site. When you get to Lake Phoenix, you will check in with Lake Phoenix and tell them you are with the Aquatic Adventures group. Whiskey Hollow AT Shelter Intermediate Backpacking Trip
Experience the Appalachian Trail in late spring, when the forest is fully green and alive but the heat of summer hasn’t quite set in. Surrounded by a vibrant canopy, this section of the AT is a great place to enjoy the outdoors with a group of like-minded friends. The route offers a little bit of everything—rocky stretches, low-lying areas, and beautiful, wooded terrain. We’ll head south on the AT to the Whiskey Hollow Shelter, where there are plenty of campsites and reliable water sources to set up for the night. There is also an older shelter nearby (Dick’s Dome). Join us for a lovely hike through the Billy Goat Trail. We will hike the easiest path of the trail which is the straight, easy walk leading up to the great falls waterfall. Walk is not intense at all, its just a bit long at about 7 miles roundtrip. You will get your 10K steps during this. Rated as pretty easy Use this address - (10790 Macarthur Blvd, Potomac, MD 20854) which is the parking lot for the trail (Attaching pics here to give a better visual). there is another parking lot up the street a little bit. If you cannot find parking in the lot you can drive up the road and find a spot along the couple streets there like (Stable lane) and park. We will meet infront of the bathrooms. Please be there by 10AM, account for traffic, parking and any delays that day so you arrive on time. Bring good walking shoes, water and a snack. All hikers walk for a short distance on the Madison Run Road before beginning the ascent of Austin Mountain and Rockytop Trails. Moderate hikers then descend on the Madison Run Spur Trail and Road back to the bus. Long hikers continue on the Big Run Loop Trail to the Appalachian Trail, which is followed through Browns Gap to the summit of Blackrock with its panoramic views. The Blackrock and Trayfoot Mountain Trails lead to our descent on the Furnace Mountain Trail to the bus. Est.: 12 miles, 2800' elevation and 9 miles, 2000' elevation. PATC Map 11. Fare: $33. **PATC Map 10 / VA Bus** *$36 plus park fee or pass. Long hike 12½ mi., 2900 ft. elevation gain. Moderate hike, 9 mi., 1500 ft. elevation gain.* See two or all three of SNP’s finest falls on this classic hike. Long hikers start at the Crescent Rock Overlook and follow the Appalachian Trail to join the moderate hiker route beginning at Fishers Gap. Hikers then go left and descend on the Rose River trail, passing Rose River Falls and continuing on to the Rose River Fire Road. At this point both groups can visit Dark Hollow Falls, after which they will diverge. Moderate hikers follow the Rose River Fire Road to Fishers Gap and the parking area. Long hikers ascend the Dark Hollow Falls Trail to Skyline Drive and follow it a short distance to Lewis Falls Road. Long hikers then descend the Lewis Falls Road to the intersection with the AT, and continue on Lewis Falls Road to Lewis Falls Trail. After a steep descent, long hikers visit the Lewis Falls. Returning to Lewis Falls trail, long hikers ascend it to the AT and follow the AT back to the bus at Fishers Gap. \-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\- RESERVATIONS Capital Hiking Club is a non-profit group, and the public is invited on all trips. We'll meet at The Capital One CafĆ©, 167 Easton Town Center, Space A-103. This is in the main mall where the Microsoft store used to be, on your left if you're standing at the bottom of the AMC Theater escalator. Join us on Saturday for an hour of uninterrupted wordmaking! • What we'll do Join us for an hour of writing! We’ve discovered that it’s strikingly helpful to write with other writers. See if it’s true for you at 10AM on Saturday mornings. Be it a book, blog, script, essay, dissertation, resume, melody, poem or just plain work stuff, you are invited to write it with us. No one will see what you've written or give you unsolicited advice. Instead of just thinking about writing, come and get some real writing done. SCHEDULE: 10:00 - SESSION 1: quick intros. 10:10 - timer starts: write for 1 hour. 11:10 - chat / take off / keep writing. OPTIONAL SOCIALIZING happens at 11A-11:30ish. Writing is very solitary. Connecting (and sometimes even commiserating) with other writers is a cool thing. BEING LATE IS OKAY: just show up and get settled, then check-in with me after the session.
