Moderate 5.8 miles, circular Starting from the Vine Cricket Grounds we enter Knole park via hole in the wall entrance. Then a walk to Knole house, we leave Knole park via Fawke Common & walk to One Tree Hill where we will stop for a little while. Walk then continues along the Greensand way all the way back to the top of Sevenoaks town. Then a walk along Sevenoaks high street back to the start point of the walk. Optional drink stop in Sevenoaks town near to the end of this walk. If it is a cloudy day, then please bring a torch for the last section of the walk. Subject to walk leaders approval we do allow well behaved dogs under full control of their owner. If you wish to bring your dog on the walk, please check with the walk leader before arriving for the walk. NB: **There is a £2 payment required for non-Ramblers Assoc. members** to help cover our Meetup costs. Please help the walk leader by **bringing the exact change**. Ramblers members are welcome on any of our walks, but we would still encourage you to RSVP on Meetup. This will give our volunteer walk leaders an idea of how many are attending, and also keep the numbers manageable. **Metropolitan Walkers is part of the Ramblers, Britain's walking charity. All welcome for 3 'taster' walks, after which please join the Ramblers - info on the [Met Walkers website](https://www.metropolitan-walkers.org.uk/how-to-join/)** Please note this walk was rescheduled from 30th April. This walk will take us on a tour of a range of markets and foodie spots between Bermondsey and Elephant and Castle. In the 18th and 19th century, Bermondsey developed as an industrial centre, which was particularly known for tanning and leatherworking. During our walk, you might spot place names relating back to this history such as Tanner Street and Leathermarket Gardens. We’ll also pass through Borough Market, which has been based on its current site since 1756, and more modern areas such as Borough Yards, which opened in 2023. Join us for a chilled out, circular, stroll around Wanstead Park. The Park is a peaceful space with old trees, open grassland, woodland paths and a beautiful chain of lakes. It has history, with traces of the grand Wanstead House estate that once stood there. We'll take this time to slow down, engage and enjoy nature. We ask that you bring a specific topic you'd like to explore, or a question that's slightly unusual to the every day thinking we get caught in. Examples could be something like: * If you were to be born again, which career would you try out? * What's the best decision you made in the last year? * What is the smallest thing you could change in your life that would have the biggest positive impact right now? No need to bring the cleverest question. Come curious, open, prepared to share and ready to hear new perspectives and maybe even meet life long friends. (See previous events for questions posed from previous walks.) We'll meet at the park entrance at 10.30am (see photo and map). We'll wait until 10.45am (only) if we know someone is delayed. We'll share our questions all together and then head off as a (loose) group, in pairs or threes, returning to the same park gates around 12.30pm. A Green Walk through EPPING FOREST. **This is part one of our two part Epping Forest walk today.** **Epping Forest** is one of the largest areas of ancient woodland close to London. The forest is not just woodland. It includes: * Heathland, Grassland plains, Wetlands, Streams, Ponds and lakes This variety of habitats makes it an internationally important conservation area. Epping Forest has a history stretching back thousands of years to the Iron Age and was once a royal hunting forest. It contains extensive areas of more than 50,000 ancient veteran oak, beech, hornbeam, birch, and holly trees. **WALK START: Theydon Bois Underground Station** (Central Line - Zone 6). When you arrive at the start look for Ken with the Meetup/ 'KEN'S EVENTS' Flag/Sign/Badge. WALK DISTANCE: Approx 6.5 miles with some gradients. WALK ROUTE: Walk through EPPING FOREST from THEYDON BOIS to LOUGHTON . WALK FINISH: Loughton Underground Station (Central Line - Zone 6). These walks are city walks and countryside walks where all the usual risks of injury during such walks apply resulting from interactions with road traffic, joggers, cyclists, e-scooters,other members of the public, animals (farm, domestic and wild), plants (allergic reactions), uneven surfaces, including portruding tree roots and potholes and there may be low overhanging branches. In these walks we cross busy roads, use towpaths alongside water, bridlepaths, country lanes and sometimes ill defined paths and tracks through woodland, bush and countryside. Some tracks may be muddy and slippery, and conditions may be wet and icy. The walk leader is not and does not purport to be a professional guide, or a medical professional, but is instead a like minded individual who also enjoys hill walking and who is familiar with the intended route. Do not attend this walk unless you accept and consent to the above risks. Ready to get outside? Our Thursday morning session in Dulwich park is back! At this moment we can meet with up to 30 people (of more than two households) to do outdoor exercise and walks. However, i like to keep our exercise groups small, so I have set the maximum participants at 12. For now this walk is for our experienced Nordic Walkers only, who already used to Nordic Walk with us regularly before Covid 19 kept us indoors, and who have their own Nordic Walking poles. As this session is outdoors, we will not ask you to wear a face mask, but we do ask you to keep 2 meters apart. Some of our walkers might be immune compromised or more at risk, so please help us keep everyone safe! Please do not come to the session and stay at home if: - you know you have been in contact - in the last 2 weeks- with someone with symptoms of possible Covid, or if you have been in contact with someone who tested positive. - you have any of the following symptoms: (new) Loss of smell/taste, Persistent cough, Fatigue, Loss of appetite, Skin rash, Hives, Fever, Severe muscle pain, Shortness of breath, Diarrhoea, Delirium, Abdominal pain, Chest pain, Hoarse voice, Eye soreness, Sore or painful throat, Nausea or vomiting, Headache, Dizziness or light headedness We meet by the cafe in the middle of the park. Session Price: £10 per session, £89 for a 10-session card or £70 unlimited sessions per month. Session cards and pay Monthly can be used in any of our outdoor walks or indoor Zoom classes sessions (except for the Parkinson's sessions). Pay What Works: The price shown above is the “true” value of the session that best reflects the work I put into preparing and leading your session. However, I understand that not everyone can afford to pay full price, and I don’t want that to stop you from joining us. In an effort to find a balance between more financial accessibility and sustainable pricing, I now offer a “Pay What Works” model. This allows for financial flexibility while still valuing and respecting the work and energy I provide in creating and delivering these classes. Ready to get outside? Our Friday morning Nordic Walk in Brockwell Park is back! At this moment we can meet with up to 30 people (of more than two households) to do outdoor exercise and walks. However, i like to keep our exercise groups small, so I have set the maximum participants at 12. For now this walk is for our experienced Nordic Walkers only, who already used to Nordic Walk with us regularly before Covid 19 kept us indoors, and who have their own Nordic Walking poles. As this session is outdoors, we will not ask you to wear a face mask, but we do ask you to keep 2 meters apart. Some of our walkers might be immune compromised or more at risk, so please help us keep everyone safe! Please do not come to the session and stay at home if: - you know you have been in contact - in the last 2 weeks- with someone with symptoms of possible Covid, or if you have been in contact with someone who tested positive. - you have any of the following symptoms: (new) Loss of smell/taste, Persistent cough, Fatigue, Loss of appetite, Skin rash, Hives, Fever, Severe muscle pain, Shortness of breath, Diarrhoea, Delirium, Abdominal pain, Chest pain, Hoarse voice, Eye soreness, Sore or painful throat, Nausea or vomiting, Headache, Dizziness or light headedness We meet by the Blackbird bakery in Herne Hill, between the station and the park. Session Price: £10 per session, £89 for a 10-session card or £70 unlimited sessions per month. Session cards and Pay Monthly can be used in any of our outdoor walks or indoor Zoom classes sessions (except for the Parkinson's sessions). Pay What Works: The price shown above is the “true” value of the session that best reflects the work I put into preparing and leading your session. However, I understand that not everyone can afford to pay full price, and I don’t want that to stop you from joining us. In an effort to find a balance between more financial accessibility and sustainable pricing, I now offer a “Pay What Works” model. This allows for financial flexibility while still valuing and respecting the work and energy I provide in creating and delivering these classes. Then send an email to ailien@fitandhappyoutdoors.com with the heading “INVOICE please”- followed by “FAHO 1” to pay full price as quoted below, “FAHO 2”, for 20% off, or “FAHO 3” for 50% off. **This is part two of our GREEN WALK through EPPING FOREST today** **.** **Epping Forest** is one of the largest areas of ancient woodland close to London. The forest is not just woodland. It includes: * Heathland, Grassland plains, Wetlands, Streams, Ponds and lakes This variety of habitats makes it an internationally important conservation area. Epping Forest has a history stretching back thousands of years to the Iron Age and was once a royal hunting forest. It contains extensive areas of more than 50,000 ancient veteran oak, beech, hornbeam, birch, and holly trees. This section is from LOUGHTON to HIGHAMS PARK (Station) and CHINGFORD MOUNT (Pub), followed by more socialising with cheap food and drinks in a pub with a convivial atmosphere. **WALK START: Loughton Underground Station** (Central Line - Zone 6). When you arrive at the start look for Ken with the Meetup/ 'KEN'S EVENTS' Flag/Sign/Badge. WALK DISTANCE: Approx 6 miles to Higham Park Station and a further 1 mile to our pub in Chingford Mount. This walk is suitable for the average experienced hill walker. Expect some hills. Do not attend this walk if you do not fit that description or if you have a medical condition (especially heart and/or lung conditions) that may impact upon your capability of completing the walk. These walks are city walks and countryside walks where all the usual risks of injury during such walks apply resulting from interactions with road traffic, joggers, cyclists, e-scooters,other members of the public, animals (farm, domestic and wild), plants (allergic reactions), uneven surfaces, including portruding tree roots and potholes and there may be low overhanging branches. In these walks we cross busy roads, use towpaths alongside water, bridlepaths, country lanes and sometimes ill defined paths and tracks through woodland, bush and countryside. Some tracks may be muddy and slippery, and conditions may be wet and icy. The walk leader is not and does not purport to be a professional guide, or a medical professional, but is instead a like minded individual who also enjoys hill walking and who is familiar with the intended route. Do not attend this walk unless you accept and consent to the above risks. We meet Saturdays at 10am, by the bike racks and benches 150 feet in front of BUBBLES Hair Salon in Reston, leaving no later than 10:05. Every week we'll walk the Green Trail to Lake Anne Plaza (\~1 mile), pause there for 5-10 minutes (water, bio, and from April-Nov a Farmer's Market), then circle the lake (2 miles) before returning to our starting point. It's roughly 3.5 miles and takes about an hour and a half. Afterwards, some members will often head to a local restaurant to refuel and relax before tackling the rest of the day. This event is open to all ages and fitness levels, and both friends and dogs are always welcome! We recommend dressing for the weather (umbrella, water bottle, snow shoes, hat, etc.) since we'll always walk, rain or shine. Hello Hikers!! Welcome to our Saturday morning hike at 8:30 AM! Many - but not all - of our hikes originate at Great Falls Park, off Georgetown Pike. Unless you already have an appropriate pass, the park entrance fee is $20/car for a single visit or $35/car for a 12-month pass that is good for the Maryland side of the river too. Come twice and you'll save 5 bucks! For the record, all scheduled hikes will be held even when it rains, snows or is super hot or cold unless the weather is too extreme to be safe. Our standard hike is a relatively easy 1 hour plus loop hike at a moderate pace. Usually a hike-extension is offered for those wishing to add a few miles more, up to 7 miles or so total. In spite of our Meetup name, we also hike in nearby parks such as Riverbend, Scott's Run, Turkey Run, Seneca, and Billy Goat A or C on theMaryland side of the Potomac. We have also scheduled hikes in Shenandoah NP and at Sugarloaf in Maryland. Please note that phone connections can be iffy in the park so don't call you are running late, but texting may work. It's best for you to be on time as we set out pretty much on time. This 1+ hour of hiking (or more) is a great way to relax, turn off your cell phones, make new friends, and get some exercise.
