Sofreh: A Contemporary Approach to Classic Persian Cuisine

Sofreh: A Contemporary Approach to Classic Persian Cuisine

From Cookbook to Table (SF)
5.0

For our next meetup, we’ll be cooking from *Sofreh* by Nasim Alikhani and Theresa Gambacorta. We’ll be meeting at Jessica's home in the Inner Richmond, SF. Please bring at least one recipe’s worth of food, prepared for 6 to 8 people. **New policy: Please post your recipe in the comments before Wednesday, April 22, to keep your spot at the table. You'll be moved to "Not Going" if you don't post. You'll receive the address on Wednesday if you do post your dish.** **As always, no shows and cancellations will get you removed from the group. Please let us know of any allergens in your dish beforehand and substitute if possible.** -- The much-anticipated cookbook—an exquisite collection of Persian recipes—from the James Beard–nominated chef of Sofreh, one of Brooklyn’s most acclaimed restaurants. Growing up in Isfahan, a province in central Iran, Nasim Alikhani was a passionate cook from childhood, spending the first years of her life in the kitchen alongside her mother. And so, when she departed after the revolution it was by re-creating the dishes of her youth that she was able to feel connected to her home. After decades of cooking for friends and family, at the age of fifty-nine she opened Sofreh restaurant in Brooklyn, to share the food and warm culture of her native Iran with a wider circle. Now, in her first cookbook, Alikhani offers her readers what she has lovingly been providing for those who know her and who eat in her restaurant: the true tastes of Iran. Here is the timeless, soul-satisfying food of Persia, with its trademark bold herb and spice flavors, succulent, savory stews and stuffed meats, vast bounty of brightly pickled vegetables and fresh fruits, and much, much more. Containing more than 120 recipes, Sofreh brings together traditional Iranian dishes and modern Sofreh favorites. * Sour Cherry Rice * Roasted Cauliflower with Shallot Yogurt and Pistachios * Sour Chicken Stew * Rosewater and Cardamom Custard * and, of course, everything you need to create a true Iranian breakfast spread at home A joyous celebration of one of the world’s great cuisines, this essential guide will delight home cooks everywhere.

***\*\* This event has been rescheduled from the original date of April 11th due to likely rain. \*\**** Join us for a lovely hike and tasty lunch on **Saturday April 25th**! We'll start by hiking the **South Ridge, Consolation Point View, and Middle Ridge Trail Loop** near El Granada. After we finish the hike we'll head to the **Barbara's Fishtrap** in Half Moon Bay (\~6 min drive away) for lunch. **The Hike:** South Ridge, Consolation Point View, and Middle Ridge Trail Loop https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/south-ridge-trail-dolphine-fire-road-and-middle-ridge-trail-loop The hike is 2.5 miles with a 'Hard' difficulty level, 662 ft elevation gain, a mix of sun and shade, and beautiful views. Some sections of the trail are flat and wide, while other sections are narrow, rugged and hilly - please wear sturdy shoes! The hike should take 1.5-2 hours. Bring sun protection, plenty of water, and snacks. **Lunch:** Barbara's Fishtrap in Half Moon Bay https://www.barbarasfishtrap.com/ We'll meet up at Barbara's after the hike. There's usually a long wait to sit inside at lunchtime on the weekends, so we plan to order from the to-go counter and sit at the outdoor tables. Barbara's specializes in delicious fish and chips and other seafood. There are vegetarian options, but they are limited at the to-go counter. If a group wants to sit inside for the full menu/experience they are more than welcome to - just keep in mind that there will likely be a wait 😊. There are pretty places to stroll along the waterside while you wait for your table. \* I've attached a picture of the outdoor menu - not sure if it's 100% up to date. You can see the full menu at their website. **Timing:** We're meeting at **9:45am** and starting the hike at 10am sharp. Please leave yourself additional time for parking in case the lot is full and you need to park nearby. **Meeting point #1 (hike trailhead) - 9:45am:** Quarry Park Parking Lot https://maps.app.goo.gl/sPQ1aPi8xSdspg8L7 \* Don't go to the trailhead listed on Alltrails, according to several users it's gated private land. **Meeting point #2 (lunch) - approx. 12-12:30pm:** Barbara's Fishtrap - 281 Capistrano Rd, Half Moon Bay https://maps.app.goo.gl/P2nWqCm51t8nYXD98 Hope to see you all there!

Join us for an early Sunday dinner at [Hog Island at the Ferry Building](https://hogislandoysters.com/restaurants/ferry-building/). Incredible seafood and hand-crafted cocktails in a stunning setting. Located in the historic Ferry Building Marketplace on San Francisco’s waterfront. Enjoy Hog Island’s finest while looking out over San Francisco Bay, the Bay Bridge, and Treasure Island. **Administrative Trivia** No Reservations. First come first served. We must all be there at the same time. Expect a wait for the group to be seated. Specialities are around $30. Average typically around $20. Oysters vary from $3.50 - $4 apiece in orders of 6, 12, 24. [Menu here](https://indd.adobe.com/view/69b7231c-707f-474f-ae79-55e30287bf1b) for reference. **Taxes and Fees** Dining in San Francisco has a sales tax (8.625%) and possibly an employee health mandate (5%), a tip (20%) may be automatically added because of the size of our party, even on individual bills. I usually add 35% to each raw bill adding individual dishes, which should include all of these, and round final payment to the closest dollar. Please bring cash, Apple Cash, or Zelle. **Attendees and Waitlist**: Please be considerate and update your RSVP 72 hours prior to the event if you are unable to attend.
