Discuss & Social 🍷 Mental health: taboo or hype?
Half the world uses TikTok to self-diagnose, while older generations still treat mental health as a taboo. Psychology buzzwords from "social anxiety" to "gaslighting" to "love languages" are everywhere on the internet. But is everyone genuinely struggling, or are we just following the latest online trends? Let's find the middle ground between real healing and social media hype. We'll discuss:
1. **The Over-Diagnosis Epidemic:** Is your ex a real narcissist, or did they just forget to text you back?
2. **Social Anxiety vs. Shyness:** Has internet culture turned the most simple social scenarios into a therapy problem?
3. **The Generational Divide:** How do we talk to older generations about mental health without being dismissed?
*Join a room of international minds, creative professionals, and cosmopolitans for our weekly late-night conversation lounge. We skip the small talk to dive directly into the gray areas of relationships, modern culture, and society.*
*Come for the perspective. Stay for the connections.*
**🍸 THE VIBE**
* **Curated Conversations:** Sharp, spicy, and unfiltered topics. We tackle everything from cultural identity to institutional trust - we focus on personal philosophies and lived experiences rather than rigid point-scoring.

**📜 HOUSE RULES**
1. **Challenge Ideas, Not People:** We love strong opinions, lightly held. No personal attacks.
2. **No Soapboxing:** This is an exchange of perspectives, not a lecture. Leave your monologues at home.
3. **Be Present:** Put the phones away during the conversation circles.
4. **Open Minds Only:** Bring your cultural background, leave your judgment at the door.

This **in-person theatre** and **livestream** talk is available online from Gresham College to Basingstoke Science subscribers.

**More details and booking instructions on the Gresham web site:**
**[https://www.gresham.ac.uk/speakers/professor-robin-may](https://www.gresham.ac.uk/speakers/professor-robin-may)**
**SUMMARY**
#### Part of:
**[The Sir Thomas Gresham Annual Lecture Series](https://www.gresham.ac.uk/watch-now/series/gresham-annual-lecture)**
What does modern physics have to say about the meaning of time? Is it a fundamental feature of reality or merely an emergent property from something deeper? Does time flow, and is the present moment special when Einstein tells us that all times coexist? Where does the arrow of time come from, if all the fundamental laws of physics are symmetric in time? In this lecture, Jim Al-Khalili examines many of these issues and gives our best guess answers as we understand the universe today.
This is the Annual Sir Thomas Gresham Lecture.

Balloon Debate: Who should be the next prime minister of The UK?
Prime Minister Keir Starmer is currently experiencing record-low public approval ratings; his net favourability is widely reported between -45% and -50%!
Who should replace him as the next prime minister of the United Kingdom?
* The Manosphere Man
* The Pacifist
* The Karate Instructor
* The Clown
* The Hypnotherapist
* The Feminist
Each character will compete and argue for your favour to keep them from being turfed out of the balloon basket.
Whom will you evict, and whom will you want to save? Which historical character will save us?
For every round of voting, someone will be thrown out until there are only two left – and then we get the showdown!
Access is free, but you are kindly asked to buy something from the bar to support the venue.
The debate is held on the first floor of the **Windsor Castle pub in Victoria**, a gloriously beautiful Victorian pub with great food, drinks and reasonable prices. Make sure to give the code word when you order: **Debate Club**!

The Science of Can and Can't - Chapter 6, Week 1
This week we'll discuss the sixth chapter of [The Science of Can and Can't](https://www.amazon.co.uk/Science-Can-Cant-Physicists-Counterfactuals/dp/0241310946/ref=sr_1_1?crid=1YFBGHPLNB4NO&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.YoSj1NdZXBPKK81RKKOjBA.ga2ZS1YEzf0cR13hyK4BpEHaXtvmjSfEhGZemtNXrLU&dib_tag=se&keywords=the+science+of+can+and+can%27t&qid=1779107463&sprefix=the+science+of+can+and+can%27t%2Caps%2C136&sr=8-1), by Chiara Marletto, co-developer of Constructor Theory alongside David Deutsch. We'll discuss it over the course of two meetings, this session being the first.
A big theme of the book is counterfactuals - statements about what *could* happen, not just what *does* happen. Chiara argues that science has historically struggled to incorporate these rigorously, even though they’re central to explanations, computation, biology, knowledge, and agency.
If this is your first time attending we meet in the cafe of the Barbican Cinema - look for people with copies of the book.
Please read the chapter before attending.

All Out of Bubblegum Film Club 142 / Who Framed Roger Rabbit
Who Framed Roger Rabbit is a 1988 American fantasy comedy film directed by Robert Zemeckis from a screenplay written by Jeffrey Price and Peter S. Seaman. Combining live-action and animation, it is loosely based on Gary K. Wolf's novel, Who Censored Roger Rabbit?. The film stars Bob Hoskins, Christopher Lloyd, Stubby Kaye and Joanna Cassidy, with Charles Fleischer providing the voice of the title character. Set in an alternative history Hollywood in 1947, where humans and cartoon characters (referred to as "toons") co-exist, Who Framed Roger Rabbit follows Eddie Valiant, a private investigator with a grudge against toons, who must help exonerate Roger, who has been framed for murder. The film received critical acclaim for its visuals, humour, writing, performances and ground breaking combination of live-action and animation. It won three Academy Awards for Best Film Editing, Best Sound Effects Editing and Best Visual Effects and received a Special Achievement Academy Award for Williams' animation direction. In 2016, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant."
Please note we will not be showing the film at the meeting. Make sure you watch the film before you attend and then come and join in with the conversation. It’s just a discussion. It’s not a screening.
We will be meeting in The Ludski Bar in the Rio Cinema.

Philosophy in the Park 142
Connecting people into Philosophy. All welcome. No previous philosophical experience needed.
**What it is**
Philosophy in the Park is a fun and friendly space for people to come together and have discussions that get deep. It’s a safe space where active creative thinking is encouraged and enjoyed, and where everyone can explore abstract concepts in a way that combines both sincerity and playfulness. Where the most important question is always - what do you think?
**What is Philosophy?**
Philosophy is about analysing concepts. It's thinking about thinking. It's not about empiricism or the physical world (eg Science and statistics). It's about abstractions, concepts and ideas (eg Identity, Morality, Mind and Truth).
**How Philosophy in the Park Works**
* Each hour begins with a group vote on which questions to discuss. You can vote for more than one question if you'd like.
* We then break out into groups, each focusing on one of the chosen questions. The question is just a starting point and it's cool if you go on tangents and end up talking about different things. You're welcome to join in and participate or if you'd prefer to sit back and enjoy the conversation, that’s also welcome.
* After an hour we regroup, take a quick break and then repeat all over again. So across the 3 hours, we’ll break out 3 times.
**Where it is**
We meet at Baroness Burdett Coutts Drinking Fountain in Victoria Park (East Park). It is marked down as "13" on the official maps found in the park.
Please feel free to bring snacks and drinks with you if you want.
After the event finishes most people stay and hang out. There’s a local supermarket to get drinks and snacks, or bring your own. You are very welcome to join us.
**Guidelines**
In order to make the conversations as fun, interesting and productive as possible please follow these simple guidelines:
1. Keep it Philosophical
(No Science, no History, no Sociology, no Evolutionary Psychology, no contestable facts, personal anecdotes etc).
2. Think for Yourself
(No phones, no looking up definitions, no name dropping Philosophers / books you've read).
3. Tangents are Cool
(Don't worry too much if the subject drifts and you don't answer the question).
4. Keep it Succinct
(Like this).
5. Be Excellent to Each Other
(But of course).
Please remember: It's not about debating and trying to win - it's about listening to people and working collaboratively to increase our collective understanding.
**Community**
Follow us on instagram: [https://www.instagram.com/londonphilosophycollective/](https://www.instagram.com/londonphilosophycollective/)
We have a WhatsApp group if you'd like to continue these conversations between meetings.

Make New Friends At A Bookshop
Do you want to meet new people in a relaxing chill atmosphere surrounded by new books? Do you dislike loud and smelly places like pubs and clubs? This is the event for you.
Science and Philosophy Book Club is creating a new kind of meetup where people who love books and knowledge can meet new friends in a big book shop. We will explore around different sections of the book shop together as a group while making interesting conversations with each other. We will go to both fiction and non-fiction areas.
If you feel shy and feel nervous to come alone, I will make sure you will feel comfortable and accomodate to your needs. I will help introduce you to others so you can go over the barrier of anxiety when approaching a new person.
We will meet on the ground floor lounge area of Doubletree Hilton Hotel at 6 p.m. It is an amazing cosy bar with classy vibes. We will wait for everyone to show up while getting some drinks and socializing. At 7 p.m we will head to the Waterstones book store near Russel Square and UCL. After we explore the book store, we will come back to the hotel bar and stay there for the rest of the night.
This event requires £5 donation to cover the venue fees. You can pay via cash or card. Thank you for helping the book club!
Deeper Discussions - Fiction Book Club 📚💬
Join us for a special edition of Deeper Discussions, where we dive into thought-provoking **fiction** that challenges perspectives, sparks imagination, and opens doors to meaningful conversations. Whether you're a lifelong reader or rediscovering the joy of novels, this is a space to explore stories that stay with you long after the final page.
**This Month's Book - The Passion According to G.H. by Clarice Lispector**
It follows a wealthy woman whose encounter in her maid’s room unravels her sense of self and reality. Strange, intimate, and philosophical, it’s a landmark novel of inner transformation.
IMPORTANT - Please only RSVP if you are planning to FINISH the book. If you have RSVP'd but think you won't be able to finish the book please change your RSVP to No to make space for others.
**How does it work?**
*Brief introductions and reflections on what struck you most
- Moderated discussion exploring plot, themes, and characters
*Open conversation where different interpretations are welcomed ️
- We wrap up by sharing insights and connections made
**What to Expect?**
**Close Reading:** We go beyond surface-level plot summary. Expect discussions that examine the author's choices, narrative techniques, and the questions left lingering in the silence between pages.
**Thoughtful Dialogue:** This isn't a race to share opinions—it's a space for genuine exploration. We listen, we reflect, we build on each other's insights.
**Meaningful Connections:** Great fiction holds up a mirror to the human experience. Through discussing characters' choices and moral dilemmas, we often discover something about ourselves and each other.
**How to get the most out of this event?**
**Finish the Book:** Please attend only if you've completed the book. Spoilers will flow freely, and the richest discussions come from those who've made the full journey.
**Ground it in the Text:** Bring your interpretations, but anchor them in what's actually on the page. Quote passages. Reference scenes. Let the author's words guide us.
**Respect & Openness:** Every interpretation matters. Make space for quieter voices. Challenge ideas, not people. Stay curious rather than defensive.
**Why a Fiction Book Club?**
**Explore the Human Condition:** Fiction lets us inhabit lives we'll never live, forcing us to confront questions about identity, morality, love, and loss.
**Sharpen Your Thinking:** Close reading develops critical thinking—noticing what the author chose to include, exclude, and how the story is told matters as much as what happens.
**Deepen Connections:** Discussing characters' choices and moral dilemmas creates surprisingly intimate conversations with fellow readers.
**Who is this event for?**
*You find yourself thinking about books long after you've finished them
- You want more from book discussions than "I liked it" or "I didn't"
*You're curious how others interpret the same story differently
- You value thoughtful dialogue over debate ️✨
*You're looking for meaningful connections with fellow readers
**What's in it for you?**
- **Fresh Perspectives:** Discover interpretations you'd never have considered alone
***Deeper Understanding:** Unpack themes and symbols that enrich your reading
***Genuine Connection: **Bond with others over shared literary experiences
*** A Space to Think: **Slow down from the noise and engage with ideas that matter
**Ready to dive deeper into stories that matter?**
Join us for an evening where fiction becomes a gateway to understanding ourselves and each other. ✨
**We really hope to see you there!**

**Event Description**
This is a social event where people have the chance to have a one-to-one conversation with someone they may or may not have met before using a 'conversation menu' (picture attached). A conversation menu is a list of pre-written conversation starter questions which participants use to have a conversation by discussing the different questions. The questions are generally about some of life's big questions and lead to some interesting conversations about important, fundamental topics which we certainly don't get the opportunity to discuss every day. Some might consider our events to be 'small-talk free zones'.
The event brings people together and invites people to discuss topics and answer questions they don't get to discuss on a daily basis, especially with people they don't know. The idea is that the more we talk about topics we don't normally talk about, to people we don't normally talk to in our habitual social circles, the more opportunities, connections and possibilities we create for ourselves. If we discuss different topics with different people, then we achieve different results.
Testimonials for the events held so far include:
'For me it was a brilliant success and hopefully it will be for many others.
It is a simple idea simply executed, asking people to pair up and discuss a number of questions on a list. And it works! Although I vaguely knew my partner, the questions allowed us time to touch on areas that I think we would have been otherwise unlikely to ever discuss e.g. which parts of your life have been a waste of time?'
'Surprisingly good and thoroughly worthwhile. Suggested questions excellent.'
‘I can heartily recommend coming along to a conversation event. The questions were really thought provoking and led to some fascinating conversations. I really enjoyed the evening and I came away with feeling I’d learned a lot from my conversation partner.”
‘I thought it was a very interesting meeting. I thought it was interesting to try to answer personal questions and listen to the other person.’
Accidental Hostile Takeover + Philosophy of Art | Veins of London Shoreditch
***I have accidentally made myself the organiser for London Stoics, and I am unaware who the rightful leader is so if the rightful leader would step up and message me or attend this session that I am running, that would be spectacular.***
**I am Camden Bassett, I run Veins of London a group for deep conversation, making friends, discussing philosophy, (good) music, art, poetry, experiences, etc**
**Our session will be on the Philosophy of Art if no one arrives enquiring about the succession of London Stoics.**

Royal Institution "Discourse: The speed of life"
This is a **theatre** and **livestream** talk from the **Royal Institution of Great Britain.** Evolutionary biologist **Anjali Goswami** explains why life on Earth has evolved to look like it does, and how new technology is changing our understanding
**ADVANCE BOOKING AND PAYMENT IS REQUIRED FOR THIS TALK.**
**More details and booking instructions on the RI web site:**
**[https://www.rigb.org/whats-on/discourse-speed-life](https://www.rigb.org/whats-on/discourse-speed-life)**
**SUMMARY**
Evolution is a seemingly inconsistent process, switching from long periods of stability to rapid transitions. But what allows some species to survive and adapt to new environments, while others are confined to fossils? Why do some groups diversify into thousands of species, while others remain at small numbers for millions of years? And why do the same forms evolve over and over again in different groups, at different times, and in different places, while many hypothetical forms never evolve at all?
In this Discourse, evolutionary biologist **Anjali Goswami** will explore the evolutionary paths that have led to life on Earth as we know it. Using a wealth of fossil data, she will explain how we can piece together the changing tempos of evolution, and delves into how new technology is allowing scientists to understand evolution like never before. You won’t just need to take Anjali’s word for it – you'll be able to hear the data as well, as the evolutionary record for a variety of species is converted to audio.
This is a theatre and livestream event for an adult audience, where the speakers and audience in our Theatre are joined by our audience online.

Walk & Talk About Life's Big Questions
[The Board Walks](http://www.theboardwalks.com/) are for curious people who love deep conversations.
If that sounds like you, **bring a thoughtful topic** and join us for a 5-mile walk (10,000+ steps!).
**HOW IT WORKS**
**Step 1: Bring a topic**
Before you arrive, think of **one** topic you want to explore. A question. A thought that's been on your mind. An obsession you want to geek out on. This is your ticket to the event.
**Step 2: Circle up & share**
We gather in a circle. Your friendly walk host gives a speech to set the tone. Everyone shares: your name, what you're grateful for, and your topic. That's it. 60 seconds.
**Step 3: Walk, talk & float**
We walk 5 miles. You naturally drift into conversation with 2-3 people at a time, pulled by topics that spark your curiosity. When you're ready to move on, just say: "I'm going to float!"
**Step 4: Feel more alive**
Two hours flies by. You're back where you started — but you feel different. More alive. More energized. More connected to yourself and others. That's why regulars join 20+ times.
*For more details, read our [Orientation Guide.](https://www.theboardwalks.com/orientation)*
**HOW TO BRING A GREAT TOPIC**
A great topic = something you're genuinely curious about.
Recent topics include:
* "What are you passionate about right now?"
* "What makes a good friend?"
* "What's a belief you used to hold that you've completely changed?"
* "How do you want to be remembered?"
* "What would you do if money wasn't a factor?"
Think of your topic like the dish you're bringing to our conversational potluck. If everyone brings an A+ dish (i.e. energizing, uplifting, expansive), we'll all walk away feeling lighter and brighter.
**WHAT TO EXPECT**
This isn't a fitness event with casual chitchat. It's a walking think tank where we explore life's big questions together, beyond small talk. *If you're looking for light banter or a standard networking event, this probably isn't the right fit.*
But if you crave depth, genuine connection, and conversations that make you feel alive? You'll love it here.
**FAQ**
* Wear casual athletic attire and sneakers. It's a long walk!
* We have multiple first-timers at each event. We work hard to create a welcoming, inclusive, clique-free space.
* We welcome people of **all** ages, backgrounds, and industries who align with the [intention](https://www.theboardwalks.com/ground-rules) of this space.
* Rain or shine, we've been out here nearly every week since July 2022. If the event is cancelled, we'll let you know.
* Dogs, babies in strollers, parents, and friends are welcome — please text/email them the event link so they can RSVP and prepare a topic!
**LOGISTICS**
* If you'll arrive over 10 minutes late, we suggest skipping the event. It's hard to find us once we start walking, and your host can't answer messages during the event.
* This walk is designed for everyone to *move together at the same steady pace* (about 20 min/mile). This format works best when the whole group moves in unison. If you have mobility limitations, we kindly encourage you to find an event better suited to your needs.
* Read our [Orientation Guide](https://www.theboardwalks.com/orientation) for full details.
* If you enjoy the event, send **[this](http://www.theboardwalks.com/)** to a friend or sign up for our **[newsletter](https://theboardwalks.beehiiv.com/)**. We're in multiple cities with more on the way. 🤠👋

Stalker
Based on the novel Roadside Picnic, it is NO picnic, but rather one of the masterpieces of world cinema. Andrei Tarkovsky's 1979 Soviet sci-fi classic, recounts the expedition of a writer and professor led by a mysterious guide called "The Stalker." to a futuristic wasteland called "The Zone." Dripping with existential dread, it continually presents strange occurrences that will have us debating the meaning of what we've just viewed right through the ending.
*Stalker* (1979) can be streamed for free on HBOMax, the Criterion Channel or Kanopy. It's also available for rent on Amazon Prime and AppleTV. The Columbus Library has two copies on disc.
Sunday funday: let's play dodgeball at Scioto Audubon park
Dodgeball is back again!
If you’ve been wanting to come out, this is an easy one to join. We’ll be playing for about 1.5 to 2 hours, you do not need to bring any equipment, and no experience is needed.
We use a specific set of rules and equipment to make the games run better and keep them fun for everybody, not just people who already know how to play.
If it rains, the event will be canceled.
