Backgammon Social Drinks n Dinner, CSC - Scotland Yard, Sun 28 June, 3pm
Venue: Civil Service Club
Date/Time: Sunday 28 June 3-8pm and possibly beyond!
First timers - please kindly read below about bringing your board, meetup fee, purchasing drinks and food, etiquette etc
Please RSVP - CSC requires names of guests
Intro
Dear Backgammon Lovers,
We had such a brilliant turnout on Sunday with around 20 backgammoners showing up at Gest where we welcomed a guest from the other side of the world, along with new and familiar friendly faces.
We'll be returning next to the Civil Service Club that is moments from Trafalgar Square.
Social & Fun Backgammon at the CSC
Whether you're a seasoned backgammoner or a newbie looking to learn this fabulous game that is thousands of years old, our social event is open to all.
This is the perfect opportunity to sharpen your game, and share a laugh (or a lucky double six!) over backgammon. Add in a drink, maybe dinner, and you’ve got the recipe for a fun and relaxed evening.
Venue Food and Drink
Just a little reminder that when we use the Civil Service Club, we’re asked to buy at least one drink whilst we’re there, and hopefully food too.
The Club has a nice range of food and snacks on offer, all at good prices, so it’s a great chance to relax and make the most of the day.
About our backgammon social group
Our group has been running for nearly 11 years since June 2015 and we have held nearly 500 official backgammon meetings - along with a further 300 off-grid (non meetups) since then.
We are the largest backgammon group in the UK with nearly 2,500 backgammoners as members.
What makes our group special are its members and the warmth, humour and friendliness whilst playing this splendid social game over a few drinks... usually fortnightly, and on a Sunday.
We have about 30-odd regular members who play socially and we very much welcome new players too - so do come along.
Dinner Time and Drinks and Food
In between the rounds of backgammon many of us sit for a meal around 6pm, but you can order drinks and food whenever you like.
RSVP
Please RSVP asap - Often I need to provide the Club with an indication of numbers.
Bring your own Backgammon Board - no problem if initially you don't have one.
Love seeing the different styles and size of boards - my boards have somehow gotten larger over the years. Please bring your own backgammon board and should you not have one please let us know in advance via the Meetup message board so that others can make the effort to bring theirs.
Meetup Fee
I will ask for £4 as the meetup fees etc have increased substantially over the past year or two. This also assists paying other admin costs including Club membership and tips.
Other Games
We sometimes play other games in the evening such as Rummikub, Yahtzee, and a type of Gin Rummy... so ask and watch this space!
Etiquette
Just a quick reminder- it’s always nice to say thank you to the staff at the CSC when you can.
Let’s also keep things warm and friendly with each other and enjoy this splendid game.
If anything comes up, please feel free to have a word with me or whoever is hosting on my behalf
Backgammon Rules
With one or two exceptions our group plays international backgammon tournament rules. I have outlined these rules on our meetup page.
My Contact
Should you get lost or need to get in touch my number is: 07956 263451. Would advise you not to post messages two hours before the meetup commences as there's often chance I will not see it.
Best wishes and have lots of fun on Sunday!

🥾 **Hike Description**
Our hike begins from the rural station of **Balcombe**, leading us straight into the rolling fields and wooded trails of West Sussex. The highlight comes early as we pass under the spectacular **Ouse Valley Viaduct**, often described as the most beautiful viaduct in England. Built in 1841 at a cost of £38,500, its 37 arches and 11 million imported bricks create a striking and photogenic landmark — a perfect stop for photos beneath its “never-ending” symmetry.
From here, our route continues through gentle countryside to the wide expanse of **Ardingly Reservoir**, which holds an incredible 5 billion litres of fresh water. Its banks are home to a wide variety of birdlife, and we pause here for refreshments, with the chance to grab an ice cream or hot drink.
The trail then leads us onwards through peaceful woodland paths and open fields, reaching the grounds of **Wakehurst Place**, a 16th-century mansion and today the most visited National Trust property in the country. Nearby sits the world-famous **Millennium Seedbank**, which holds 1.9 billion seeds from more than 75,000 species — the largest wild plant seed collection on Earth.
We complete the circuit by returning through more wooded tracks to **Balcombe Lake**, a small and picturesque hidden gem nestled among the trees. This makes for a peaceful finale to a hike that combines Victorian engineering, rural beauty, and world-leading conservation.

London's Lost Rivers - Walk the River Fleet!
Come along on Sunday 28th June for a guided walk/hike walking the route of one of London's lost rivers - the River Fleet!
**About the walk**
We will pick up the River Fleet and walk the last 3 miles to where it enters the River Thames. The Fleet is unfortunately completely covered and is now part of sewer system.
The walk is part hike/part guided, so on the way I will show you points of interest which would have been on the banks of the River Fleet and tell you more about them.
**The River Fleet**
The river's name is derived from the Anglo-Saxon *'flēot'* meaning *"tidal inlet"*. Its headwaters are two streams on Hampstead Heath and flows south about 6 miles into the River Thames.
Over time, as London grew, the river became increasingly a sewer and when the London sewer system was built by Joseph Bazalgette in the 1860's, the Fleet was covered over and became part of the system.
We will walk about 3 miles, so sensible shoes are advised. The terrain is pavements.
**Payment**

Ramsgate to Margate Coastal Walk from London!
**Sunday 28th June**
✨ Ramsgate to Margate Coastal Walk ✨
📍St Pancras Station📍
⏰ 09:00-9:15 am ⏰
We're leaving London for the day to walk the Viking Coastal Path from Ramsgate to Margate!
We'll explore the 11km stretch of coast before settling in Margate where we'll have time to visit the \*free!\* Turner Contemporary Museum, the famous Crab Museum and simply chill on the beach in the sun with a cold beer.
**Logistics**
If you're coming on the trip you need to book an open return to Ramsgate (which will allow you to return from Margate too), and we'll be taking the outbound train from ST PANCRAS to RAMSGATE that departs at 9:40am. Tickets can be purchased at southeastern (where 33% discounts are available for bookings of 3 or more if you don't have a railcard):
https://www.southeasternrailway.co.uk/
You need to be on this train to make the trip. We are allowing plenty of time beforehand to meet, grab a coffee, so this shouldn't be an issue.
Please ensure you bring adequate provisions for a walk and time at the beach including water, sunscreen, good shoes, swimwear, and a benevolent disposition :)
Please join our whatsapp group to stay informed of all the latest with regards to our event on the day and going forward:
**What is all this?**
This is a fun enterprise set up purely for the purposes of bringing new people together and having a good time. Our meet-ups are for everyone - all inclusive and welcoming! Our events will follow no particular theme - variety is the spice of life after all - and we'll try to keep a nice mix of different accessible options.
**Can I come alone?**
Of course!! That's nerve-racking for some but a huge number of our participants come alone and feel equally uncertain about it. The hardest part is only ever the activation energy required to ask that first question or two.
**Is there any cost?**
We are not making a penny from any of this - It's all done for the pure thrill of the thing itself and with the belief that the monetisation of a fun project is a sure-fire way to suck the joy out of it! We will be selecting some activities that will be ticketed events, but it will simply be up to you to book in if you want to come!
**Do I need to sign up?**
Usually no! Just show up - but just check the detail of the event above to be sure.
V is for...V&A East Museum
*"A visit to the museum should begin in delight and end in wisdom.”* - [Sir Henry Cole](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Cole_(inventor))

V&A East Museum is a new kind of museum: five floors exploring how creativity changes the world, rooted in the communities and voices that are shaping global culture right now.
Their free permanent **Why We Make** galleries created by JA Projects in collaboration with the V&A East Youth Collective, the building itself is a story of co-creation. Inside, over 500 objects spanning centuries and cultures place works by Leigh Bowery and Althea McNish in direct conversation with new east London acquisitions — past and present, local and global.

Canal Walk - Angel to Victoria Park Cafe / Market
We will enjoy a leisurely walk (approx 45 mins - 1 hour) along Regent's Canal from Angel station and ending at the fabulous Victoria Park Market. This event usually runs on the 4th Sunday of each month, unless there is bad weather or exceptional circumstances. We are a welcoming group, so feel free to mix around and say hello other people.
There is a wondering food market in Victoria Park, and most of us will get something to eat together. We usually sit on the grass or public benches (if available) near the Bonner Gate entrance, behind the Dogs of Alcibiades statue. This is at the intersection of foodstalls running north/south and east/west. If it is raining or the market is closed, we can either go to the Pavillion cafe, or The Crown pub on Grove Road instead.
Please note a few points:
1\. There is currently no charge for this group\. I will need to review this again later in 2026\.
2\. WE WILL WAIT ONLY ABOUT 10 MINUTES AFTER THE START TIME\. If you are running late\, please catch us up along the canal\. Please note\, I will not be checking for meetup or whatsapp messages after the walk starts\.
3\. The nearest tube station to Victoria Park is Bethnal Green station \(central line\)\. Please check Google Maps or similar\.
4\. You are responsible for yourselves on the walk\, so please bring appropriate footwear etc\. Please be mindful of those around you\, especially where the canal gets narrow in places\.

Previously, there was a separate walk on the 3rd Sunday of the month, which started at Limehouse Basin, and then ran along the same canal to Victoria Park. Please note, the walks starting from Limehouse on the 3rd Sunday of the month are now cancelled for the foreseeable future.
Capital Ring Part 14 - Hackney Wick to Beckton District Park
We will be walking section 14 out of 15 of the Capital Ring walk. Starting from Hackney Wick station, we will walk along the Greenway, past Abbey Mills pumping station and Greenway Community orchard and finish in Beckton District Park.
We will be walking for approximately two hours with a break in between. The pathways are mainly on level tarmac paths with a few moderate slopes but it is mainly flat, and there shouldn't be any issues with mud even if it has been raining.
I'll keep a watch on the forecast and will cancel the event a day or two before if the weather is looking bad. Keep an eye on the event chat which I'll update a day or two before to confirm we are going ahead.
We will meet just outside Hackney Wick overground station at 10:45 at the White Post Lane exit (North side). Unless there is a transport issue affecting everyone, we will aim to start off on the walk at 11am. I will add my location tracking on Glympse so if you are late, we will not wait but you will be able to catch us up.
After the walk at Beckton I am planning on heading to a local pub for a drink and a bite to eat. If you are up for coming along please indicate in the comments. I'm estimating we would reach the end of the walk at Beckton for around 13:00. The nearest station to the endpoint is Royal Albert, however I understand this station is closed on the Sunday of the walk and the nearest next open DLR station is Prince Regent, around 15 minutes walk.
