Some of us will meet by BOOTS at Victoria train station as from 6.15pm and then take the train at 6.36pm that arrives at Battersea Park train station at 6.40pm. Let's go with the flow ! Join us for the first in a series of walks exploring the rich history, architecture, and character of Highgate—featuring over 100 points of interest and a selection of its many historic pubs. Starting from Archway Station, we’ll make our way up Highgate Hill, passing notable landmarks including the Whittington Stone and St Joseph’s Church. After a short detour via Hornsey Lane and Archway Bridge, we’ll arrive at Lauderdale House and the beautiful Waterlow Park. Dating back to around 1580, Lauderdale House was once owned by Sir Sydney Waterlow, who generously gifted the house and its 29 acres of gardens to the public. We’ll take time to stroll through the park and enjoy its scenery. Returning to Highgate Hill, we’ll encounter Cromwell House, a Grade I listed 17th-century building. Its remarkable oak staircase—adorned with carved Stuart-era military figures atop each newel post—is considered of national importance. As we continue, we’ll pass a variety of elegant 17th- and 18th-century homes and learn about Highgate’s fascinating past—including its role as the site of Europe’s first cable-car system. The walk also takes in traditional shopfronts and canopies, historic pubs, and the former police station and gaol. We’ll pause for refreshments at the Flask before continuing to explore more points of interest nearby. We’ll then head down Southwood Lane, finishing the walk at the Woodman, conveniently located near Highgate tube station. The **Seven Sisters** are a spectacular series of gleaming white chalk cliffs formed at the end of the last Ice Age by glacial meltwater. Erosion has since created an “eighth sister,” and today the cliffs stand as one of England’s most iconic landscapes. We begin in the coastal town of **Seaford**, home to a Napoleonic-era **Martello Tower** built in 1810 as part of a chain of 103 coastal defences against French invasion. From here, the trail climbs onto the cliff tops, where for much of the day we walk high above the sea, treated to endless coastal views and fresh sea air. The final highlight is **Beachy Head**, a dramatic beauty spot with sheer chalk cliffs dropping into the sea below. Walk length 13miles/20km approx. Circular. A chance to explore some Cotswold countryside close to the edge of Oxford with a number of features including the views of Blenheim Palace from Blenheim Park, the pretty market town of Woodstock and the remains of a small Roman Villa that is free to visit at North Leigh. Blenheim Palace was designed in an English Baroque Style and was the birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill. North Leigh Roman Villa dates from the 4th century and is regarded as one of the larger Roman Villas of Roman Britain. Lunch and Finish Please bring a packed snack lunch and water for the walk, we will probably have lunch at Woodstock. This is a medium hike with undulating terrain. Transport & meeting Meet outside Hanborough Train Station for walk to start after the train arrives at 10.54am. The 9.50am from London Paddington gets to Hanborough for 10.56am. If you want to meet for groupsaves suggest meeting close to the WHSmith at Paddington (see photo below) at 9.20am to give yourself time to get tickets. Return train fare is approx. £29 super saver return with a network railcard or about the same price with a groupsave of 3 or more (must travel back together with groupsave). The organizer is coming by train from High Wycombe and not London so will meet the group at Hanborough. £7 cash payable on the day guided walk & meetup costs.
