Day trip by coach - Two Pretty Towns & Two Neolithic Barrows in Kent! (NOW FULL)
Day trip by coach - Two Pretty Towns & Two Neolithic Barrows in Kent! (NOW FULL)
THE TRIP IS NOW FULL, IF YOU WISH TO ATTEND, ADD YOURSELF TO THE WAITING LIST AND I WILL CONTACT YOU IF A PLACE BECOMES AVAILABLE. Come along on Saturday 9th May to visit two pretty towns and two Neolithic Long Barrows in the county of Kent! **About the trip** The name 'Kent' is of Celtic origin and dates back to the 4th century BC. It is one of the earliest names recorded in Britain and translates as '*coastal district*', '*corner-land'*' or '*land on the edge*'. The county of Kent has stunning countryside and a pretty coastline. It has been known as the 'Garden of England' for over 400 years due to its long-standing reputation for agricultural excellence, particularly fruit orchards, hop gardens, and wine production. **Kit Coty's & Little Kit Coty's Long Barrows** Kit Coty & Little Kit Coty's Long Barrows are the remains of elongated earth and stone burial mounds constructed around 4000 BC. They belong to a localised regional variant of barrows produced in the vicinity of the River Medway. Today, some large sarsens stones remain (some upright and some fallen over) with each weighing in excess of 15 tonnes each. The barrows and surrounding areas were excavated in 1957 and contained traces of the cremated bones of at least nine adults and possibly two children, and artifacts dated to Late Neolithic. Both the Long Barrows are close to each other (we can't get access to the Addington & Chestnuts Long Barrows). **Lenham** Lenham is a small market town in mid Kent and sits on the River Stour. Its on the edge of the North Downs with a history that goes back over 1500 years. In medieval times, the town would have welcomed pilgrims walking from London to the shrine of St. Thomas at Canterbury cathedral. The high street has many period properties from Tudor to Victorian times **Charing** The small market town of Charing sits nearby to Lenham, also on the Pilgrims Way, with Canterbury cathedral only being one day's walk away. The town made its money from the many watermills on the River Stour and has many period properties. **Coach seating** * If you wish to reserve a seat on the coach in advance, after you pay please look at the seating plan in the photos [here](https://www.meetup.com/london_cultureseekers/photos/35924729/533630883/) and then email me - [general@cultureseekers.org](http://general@cultureseekers.org), with the seat number/s you wish to reserve. Dinosaur Village (15 miles)
Dinosaur Village (15 miles)
In his 1822 *Excursions in the County of Sussex,* Thomas Kitson Cromwell describes Cuckfield as a small neat town. Around this time, local residents Gideon & Mary Ann Mantell were preoccupied with unusual artifacts cemented in the local quarries, including Mary discovering the first Iguanodon. Pieces of Iguanodon & Megalosaurus feature in the town's free museum. This walk features some free time in Cuckfield to pop in the museum or just grab a coffee. Up to you. After that it's plenty of Sussex Ouse Valley trails and Wealden woods with maybe bluebells still, culminating in selfie hotspot Balcombe viaduct, before returning to Haywards Heath. Outward Travel: Take the train departing 9.45 AM from London Bridge to HAYWARDS HEATH. The return train fare with a Network Card or GroupSave is £11.45. The organiser will see people on the train. People can liaise in front of the ticket office at London Bridge to arrange group train tickets. Walk start: 10.30 AM from Haywards Heath rail station. Bring a packed lunch. Villages & pub stop. Circular walk. *How to join?* * The walk is entirely free of charge; * You only arrange for your own travel and pub expenses; * Understand our terms and conditions below (the "IMPORTANT" part); * Understand how to stay safe outdoors, as you will be responsible for yourself. See our quick safety tips: http://www.meetup.com/Free-Outdoor-Trips-From-London/about/ *What to bring* * Plenty of water, 1-2 litres recommended * Enough snacks and packed lunch to keep you energized along the walk * Extra snacks and an extra packed lunch just in case * Rainproof (ideally waterproof) clothing, sturdy shoes/boots you don't mind getting muddy * Spare socks * Walking poles and/or an umbrella :-) * Yourself... * ...and your camera! * Cash for train ticket * Cash for pub at the end of the walk? Feel free to ask any questions in the comments section! IMPORTANT Please bear in mind this is a free of charge, self-guided trip with a hobby group. It is not organized by a business nor any entity with commercial purposes. Any trip details, travel advice, route planning, instructions and other content in our group merely represent our shared personal knowledge, research and suggestions as outdoor enthusiasts. As this is no business, there is no "product", "service" or "package" and also no "tour guide", "operator" or "walk leader". Each participant is responsible for their own safety. Even if some of us are very experienced walking outdoors, nobody assumes responsibility for any kind of injury, damage or loss that may happen. Despite this, we take extreme precautions and all trips we plan are very safe, fun, highly educational and popular. Our experienced members volunteer their time and effort to shape a pleasant and quality adventure for everyone :-) By participating you acknowledge and agree with this disclaimer. Here are our tips on staying safe during outdoor trips: http://www.meetup.com/Free-Outdoor-Trips-From-London/about/ TRAVEL, ACCOMMODATION, INSURANCE Although we provide detailed suggestions, each participant is expected to arrange their own travel - this gives everyone the freedom and choice. Anyone interested in travel or outdoor insurance should also arrange this on their own. As mentioned above we always take extreme precautions, but some people may still feel safer if covered. As most of our trips are confirmed or postponed very close to the event date - heavily depending on the weather forecasts - we advise not to buy this until the last minute. People getting tickets from the same station are encouraged to meet early on the day to benefit from discounts such as GroupSave.

Image above by Wjh31 ( Creative Commons Attribution 3.0) Fee £15 **Pay on the day and RSVP me please by email - on this page - or text** Meet at Aldgate Station @ 11am The Jewish community have an intriguing and often surprising history in this country, dating back to at least the time of William the Conqueror - and in my opinion, well beyond that. And, as with everywhere else in Europe, the majority wound up in the capital. This is a walking tour around one of London's most buzzing and character-filled areas and one that has often been the landing place for immigrants new to the city. I will show you one of the oldest synagogues in Europe, a beautiful soup kitchen, a sculpture that should melt your hearts and introduce you to a variety of colourful characters - if I'm in the mood i may even sing but don't let that put you off! Guided walk £15 - payable on the day Host - Laurence 07889 298573 \*JOIN OUR 45+ NOT GRUMPY FACEBOOK COMMUNITY \* <[https://www.facebook.com/45plusnotgrumpy/](https://www.facebook.com/45plusnotgrumpy/)\>\*
