New members will be able to borrow printed music. We do perform both formally and informally, and our varied repertoire supports this. Yijia is a singer-songwriter from China interested in exploring her cultural identity and diverse traditions through music-making. Yijia attended 'Sing My Song’ at the age of 16 and launched her music career as a singer-songwriter in China after winning the 16th CMA (Chinese Music Awards) for ‘Media’s Choice Album’ and the nomination for ‘Best New Chinese Female Artist’ for the Chinese Media Music Awards. After coming to the UK, Yijia has established a career in traditional Chinese folk singing and Guzheng playing, having performed at WOMAD festival, Victorious Festival, BBC Radio 3, Asia House’s ‘One Voice’ documentary series and Sofar Sounds London. Yijia is endorsed by Arts Council UK as a Global Talent and holds a degree in Music from the University of Oxford and SOAS (University of London). On the first Tuesday of each month, gain respite from the busy streets of London by joining us in this inspiring space, where we celebrate all types of human creativity. Every Thursday evening, at Gospel Oak Methodist Church, Agincourt Road, London NW3 2NT our choir tries out new material and practises songs in 4 - 8 part harmony under the direction of our superb Musical Director Ben Cox, and accompanist, Jonathan Taylor. We meet from 7.30pm - 9.30pm. So come along and sing with us, as a taster. First Wednesday of every month, upstairs at the William Morris Pub. Free entry and house drinks are half price between 6pm and 7pm. We sing three sets of eight songs, plus a few requests. We hand out chorus sheet books to all guests, and get 90% audience participation by way of them joining in singing the choruses. The pub has its own kitchen downstairs and cooks good quality reasonably priced food, which looks good and smells good, just like us. The pub is situated in picturesque Merton Abbey Mills on the River Wandle, only ten minutes walk from Colliers Wood tube station. The topic for March is "Our Bodies, Ourselves" Speak Easy: true stories, told live. The idea is simple: an audience, an open microphone, and great stories. Hilarious, gripping, poignant- it's up to you. Audiences are invited to come to listen or come to tell as folks from all corners of Columbus offer their stories live on stage! Held at Wild Goose Creative's warm, intimate space, this night of tales occurs on the 3rd Thursday of every month. Doors open at 6:30 pm, show starts at 7:00 pm. Please arrive early if you want to tell, as we generally only have room for a limited number of tellers, and the sign-up sheet has a tendency to fill up fast. Formed around the idea that people need stories--they're what hold and draw us together--SpeakEasy celebrates the strangeness and commonness of being human. And in a world of smartphones, Facebook, Twitter, and more . . . it gives people a real, breathing, in-person way to connect. The night is geared for true stories of all kinds, taking the best tales told around kitchen tables, in darkened pubs, on the street corner, and at late-night parties and giving them an audience.
