The **Seven Sisters** are a spectacular series of gleaming white chalk cliffs formed at the end of the last Ice Age by glacial meltwater. Erosion has since created an “eighth sister,” and today the cliffs stand as one of England’s most iconic landscapes. We begin in the coastal town of **Seaford**, home to a Napoleonic-era **Martello Tower** built in 1810 as part of a chain of 103 coastal defences against French invasion. From here, the trail climbs onto the cliff tops, where for much of the day we walk high above the sea, treated to endless coastal views and fresh sea air. Our route follows the **South Downs Way**, passing through **Birling Gap** and past the striking **Belle Tout Lighthouse**, famously moved 17 metres inland in 1999 to save it from falling into the sea. The final highlight is **Beachy Head**, a dramatic beauty spot with sheer chalk cliffs dropping into the sea below. The poet **Keats** and **G.K. Chesterton** also drew inspiration from these hills, showing how this corner of Surrey has long captured creative imaginations. Our hike begins in the **Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty**, with woodland and rolling trails through Norbury Park before joining the twisting roads used in the **2012 Olympic cycling race**. From here, we climb to the summit of Box Hill, where the **Salomons Memorial viewpoint** offers sweeping panoramas across the Weald and as far as Devil’s Dyke by the South Coast. On the way we also encounter traces of history, including a late 19th-century fort built to defend against French invasion and the semi-ruined folly tower from 1815. After soaking up the views, we descend to the **River Mole** and cross its famous **Stepping Stones**, a much-loved landmark of the area. We will all walk from Arundel to Amberley village together past the castle markets to the roof top lounge in Amberley for lunch (about 9km) Option 1: Some can stay on the roof top and relax for the afternoon. Option 2: From the rooftop some of us can do the afternoon circular hike, another 10km. Option 3: another option If you like, you could just join us for the afternoon circular hike from the rooftop. This picturesque hike takes you through the heart of the South Downs National Park. The Wonder of Ancient Oak Savernake Forest, Berkshire

**Distance**: 24km (15 miles approx) circular route **Ascent**: 265m **Duration**: 6 hours walking **Grade**: Moderate Savernake Forest is a quiet, hidden wonder that holds more veteran trees than anywhere else in Europe - walking here feels like moving through deep time. My plan is to visit this February when the forest stands bare, allowing the full presence of the trees to be seen and felt. Without leaves, their vast forms and ancient structures are revealed in a way that is really striking . I’ll return again in autumn, when the same paths are transformed by colour, offering a very different, equally powerful experience. Savernake is the largest privately owned forest in Britain, set within the North Wessex Downs. Its damp, heavy soils are particularly well suited to oak and beech, and many of the trees have immense girths that are awe-inspiring. Some are over 1,000 years old, bearing the marks of centuries of weather, growth, and survival. Some of trees to see are: King of Limbs (Radioheads 2011 album is named after it), Cathedral Oak, Big Belly Oak, New Queen Oak, Replacement King Oak to name but a few! There will be an optional pub stop at the end of the walk. The route then follows the **Weald Way** to the remains of the lost village of **Dode**, dating from Roman times but destroyed by the plague, leaving only its atmospheric Norman church and a lingering reputation for ghosts. We continue along woodland trails to the **Coldrum Stones**, an Early Neolithic long barrow whose name means “place of enchantments.” More than 1,000 years older than Stonehenge, this ancient monument is one of Britain’s earliest prehistoric sites, and from its summit we enjoy commanding views across the valley. Our trail then joins the **Pilgrims Way**, climbing the North Downs escarpment to reach peaceful uplands and the hamlet of **Upper Bush**, where the surrounding countryside feels wonderfully remote. After passing through a succession of shady woods, we emerge into **Cobham Woods**, an ancient deer park that contains the grand **Darnley Mausoleum**, a striking 18th-century landmark. The final leg of our journey brings us into the historic village of **Cobham**, with its 13th-century church, fine brass memorials, and half-timbered pubs once frequented by Charles Dickens.
