Sunday Kickball @ Bushrod Park!

BASS presents our favorite event, kickball! We will be at our normal spot in the East Bay at Bushrod Park in Oakland! Bring your soccer cleats (for better grip on the field), sunscreen, and athletic wear and water for a fun time out! For those who haven't played kickball before, the rules will be explained and demonstrated before we start. Depending on the attendance, we'll either have 2 teams facing off or a rotation of 3 teams all together. Then after we may hit the local pizza/bar scene if everyone still wants to hang out. We have a HARD START at 1pm, so please be sure to show up on time for warmups! (We also nearly lost the field previously because not enough people were there on time) See you there soon! 🔴 Note: Please, please, please don’t no show. 🙏 It makes these events really difficult to plan. If you no show once, you will be given lower priority for future events. The second time, you will be removed from the event list for any attendee limited event we host.

Weekly Hikes at Reinhardt Redwood Regional Park

A Sunday at 3;00 PM moderate hike in addition to our regular Wednesday hikes at Redwood Park. This is a mostly shaded, 7 mile, 1000 feet elevation, moderate-paced hike at Oakland's Reinhardt Redwood Regional Park. Enter from Redwood Gate https://goo.gl/maps/PrGuttC8dEnxN1KC9 We meet at Fishway Lot (the first parking lot on the left). Fishway is a small, unpaved lot closest to the entrance gate. Both Park Entry and Parking is free and there are 4 parking lots. At 3:00 pm we start with a meet and greet; and each person gets to share 1 or 2 things that made them happy this week. Please be on time and get to know your new friends during the hike. We leave for the hike at 3:05pm. Route to be determined day of the hike. Hike is about 3 hours. We stop at most trail intersections along the hike to regroup. Please make sure to bring enough water and clothes and respect for everyone and nature. If you cannot make it, please update your RSVP so others can join the hike. Participants assume responsibility for their own safety Doggie friends are currently not part of this group hike.

Lichen Walk

Experts in Fire Science, Lichenology, Botany, Ornithology, Geology, Hydrology, and Astronomy provide in person experiences to highlight how science can deepen our understanding of our environment. Sponsored by Friends of Mt. Tam in Partnership with California State Parks Come learn about the small and cryptic world of lichens! We will meet at the Rock Springs trailhead, and walk a there-and-back-again trail to meet some of the charismatic lichens of the area. These grow on rocks, trees, and on the ground. Participants will get to know certain lichen species, as well as lichen growth forms, and lichen ecology. The hike will be easy to moderate, with frequent stops to look at lichens. Bring a magnifying glass or hand lens if you have one - lichens are even more fascinating up close! Dr. Klara Scharnagl is the Tucker Curator of Lichenology at the UC Berkeley Herbarium. She is continually fascinated by the lichen symbiosis, and the many forms that lichens take. Her emphasis is on lichen ecology; how lichens respond to and interact with their environments. Lichens remind us to take our time, and to look more closely at the world around us. **GENERAL THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT SCIENCE QUEST EVENTS** **CAPACITY:** Only RSVP if you are able to attend. Most events have limited capacity - No Shows will likely prevent someone else from attending. **PARKING:** We strongly recommend carpooling and arriving at least 30 minutes early to locate parking. Tam has many microclimates, and its location near the convergence of several different ecoregions (North Coast, South Coast, Central Valley) supports a wide diversity of plant communities. We’ll meander through these plant communities, discussing and identifying some of the plants and ecological processes that characterize them. Our walk may cover up to 1.5 miles, and you might want hiking poles for several short rocky/steep/off trail sections. David Edelson is an amateur naturalist. He retired from a career focused on environmental advocacy and land conservation, most recently with The Nature Conservancy. He has led field trips for local chapters of the California Native Plant Society as well as Marin Audubon Society and Golden Gate Bird Alliance. Quad 4 hike: Muir Woods from Bootjack

Join docent Debra Hoitomt for a hike down to Muir Woods from Bootjack. On a Thursday morning, we hope to enjoy a peaceful stroll among the majestic redwoods. Please note this hike has 1300 ft of elevation gain over 5.5 miles. **Hike Route** 5.5 miles / 1300 feet elevation gain Start at Bootjack Parking Lot; Matt Davis to Stapelveldt to Ben Johnson; cross Redwood creek to Bootjack back to Bootjack Parking Lot Pace: Moderate but steady Recommended: water, sturdy shoes, hiking poles, snack, layers Sign up is required PARKING: Bootjack parking requires an $8 cash fee. Together they are 21 miles with 4,300 feet of elevation. Individually they are 4.5 – 6.5 miles long with 500 – 1,500 of elevation. Upon completing all 4 hikes, you can request a badge of Honor.

“Bridge to Breakfast Walk" from SF to Sausalito over the Golden Gate Bridge

**Join us on this 8-mile *Bridge to Breakfast Walk*™ across the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco to Sausalito! Take one of the most unique and exhilarating walks on the planet. Make friends and get in shape.** The walk starts at the St. Francis Yacht Club parking lot near Crissy Field in San Francisco, crosses the iconic Golden Gate Bridge, pauses for a "bring-your-own" picnic-style meal together in historic Fort Baker, and continues to historic and quaint Sausalito. Your return to San Francisco may be had by Golden Gate Transit Bus or by Ferry. Although we usually return to our starting point before noon, you may plan on returning no later than 1 p.m. **Your host, Lindsay Spiller** (he, him), will be wearing a Cal cap and will be standing at the far end of the parking lot next to the stone wall bordering the bay. **Read Carefully this Information about the Walk:** * **Breakfast: Walkers are advised to bring their food and beverages (water and coffee if desired) on the walk. We will stop at and use picnic tables on the Marin side on the way to Sausalito** * **Total time.** Set aside about 5-6 hours (2-3 hour walk; 1.5-hour breakfast and socializing; 30-minute Ferry ride back to SF or a bus ride back to the starting location). By bus, you may expect to be back to the starting location by noon. * **Start.** St Francis Yacht Club Entrance (99 Yacht Road, San Francisco, California) * **Meetup and Departure times.** Please plan to arrive at 6.45 AM as we leave promptly at 7:10 AM * **Return to SF.** Upon arriving in Sausalito, you can explore the town, return by Golden Gate Bus Transit, or return by Ferry. The bus fare back to the starting point is $8 and may be paid by Clipper Card or Cash.
