Roaming The Mission Alleys and Gardens

Roaming The Mission Alleys and Gardens

Sun, May 17, 8:30 PM
From Roaming Zen
4.9

*I am going to be in the UK and on the East Coast for a couple of weeks, so this will be the last roam until June 12th.* The Mission district, as shown from Bernal Heights in this picture, is one of the flattest parts of the city, and as such was developed very early on - and then largely destroyed in 1906. This roam is primarily to visit the wonderful 'hidden garden', which is only open on Tuesdays and Sundays, but we will also pass through some of the famous alleys, and look for the traces of the old San Jose railroad line that cut diagonally across the neighbourhood. *These roams are offered by donation. They are one way I am able to pay my rent in San Francisco.* *Punctuality is always appreciated. Please send a message on the app if you are running a little late. I can usually respond to messages before we get underway, but then I won't be checking my phone.* *I know Meetup is notorious for no-shows and late changes of rsvp. I am not as strict as other organisers, but I do pay attention to those who regularly drop off or no-show, and there will be consequences for recidivists, as it is discourteous for others who would like to attend.*

NOTE: this is more of an informational event posting and less of a typical Meetup event posting since this is a city event with thousands of people, so meeting specific people from our group will be hard. Making this event anyways though as a way to get the word out to people who might be new to the area and don't know about this, and also leaving the comments open to anyone who wants to try coordinating something. If you're new to the Bay Area, come check [out this annual 12k run/walk](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bay_to_Breakers) in San Francisco. Thousands of people attend this event, and this race even set the world record for most participants in a footrace with 110,000 participants back in 1986! This is a pretty laid back event, with many people dressing up in costumes for the race, so don't worry if you're not a runner since there will be plenty of us walking too. **This is less of a race and more of a party where people eat, drink, and play music along the course, so this is a fun time!** [Here's another article](https://www.theownteam.com/blog/bay-to-breakers-2025-san-franciscos-iconic-run-returns/) discussing the event. There's the traditional 12k race, an extended 15k race, and a centipede version where you're tied together with (up to) 12 other people and you need to complete the race together (links to all of these below). The first wave starts at 8:00am and last wave starts at 8:45am (from Main Street and Howard Street near Embarcadero). **GETTING THERE** See the [official Bay to Breakers page](https://www.baytobreakers.com/gettingtotherace) for their recommendations ***[BART](https://www.bart.gov/news/articles/2026/news20260428)*** See the [BART trip planner](https://www.bart.gov/planner) for general use * One train will leave Millbrae at 6:29am, Daly City at 6:41am, 16th St./Mission at 6:52am, and then arrive at Embarcadero at 6:57am. No other stops will be made along the line. * A second train will leave Pleasant Hill/Contra Costa Centre at 6:23am, MacArthur at 6:43am, West Oakland at 6:52am, and then arrive at Embarcadero at 6:58am. No other stops will be made along the line. * A third train will leave Dublin/Pleasanton at 6:17am, Bay Fair at 6:34am, West Oakland at 6:54am, and arrive at Embarcadero at 7:01am. No other stops will be made along the line. * A fourth train will leave El Cerrito del Norte at 6:33am, MacArthur at 6:46am, West Oakland at 6:55am, and arrive at Embarcadero at 7:02am. No other stops will be made along the line. ***Muni*** [Embarcadero](https://www.sfmta.com/stops/embarcadero-station-16992) will be closest to the start, use the [trip planner](https://www.sfmta.com/trip-planner) if you're unfamiliar * Muni Metro Subway opens early at 6am at select stations: West Portal, Forest Hill, Castro, Church, Van Ness, and Embarcadero. Train service starts at 6am from West Portal Station with trains every 12 minutes. * Early N Judah Train Service - Three extra eastbound N Trains depart La Playa at 6:10 a.m., 6:30 a.m., and 6:50 a.m., serving Van Ness and Embarcadero Stations downtown. * Extra morning buses in Routes 5 and 7 between 6 a.m. and 7 a.m. * After the race, extra N Judah Trains, N Judah Express Buses to Civic Center BART, and extra 5R Fulton Rapid buses will take you back downtown. ***[Caltrain](https://www.caltrain.com/baytobreakers)*** The first train will depart San Jose at 6:04am (OR EARLIER IF FULL), arriving in SF at 7:20am. The second train will depart Palo Alto at 6:18am (OR EARLIER IF FULL), arriving in SF by 7:00am (earlier if full) See [the schedule](https://www.caltrain.com/baytobreakers) for other stops for the special service. All participants agree to assume 100% responsibility for their own safety, conduct, and well-being and recognize that possible hazards exist while participating in outdoor (or any other) activities, and agree to participate solely at their own risk. If you RSVP “Yes” and/or attend any of our events, it shall be conclusively presumed that you understand and agree to this policy.

It’s a great chance to unwind, socialize, and soak in the nice ocean breeze. **Notes:** * All paces welcome, but please note running in the sand is a bit more challenging * Barefoot running is optional * We’ll keep an eye on belongings, but please avoid bringing valuables Come for the run, stay for the good vibes 🌊 Please let me know if you have any questions! 628-236-9369
