ST PANCRAS • S2E3: LOVE III | Thought Experiments in Pubs

This episode will explore various ideas associated with 'LOVE'. There are so many ideas to explore, in fact, that this is our third time tackling the topic. We will explore it by way of three \*new\* thought experiments, which I will post in the comments on the day. Join us for thought provoking conversations at the beautiful Betjeman Arms! You can access the pub either from the street (entrance to the right of The St Pancras Hotel entrance) or via St Pancras Station (entrance from the upstairs train platforms). We'll be in the private dining room - ask at the bar if you can't find us. * Organise ourselves into small groups (3-6ish - apparently 4 is the best number for a good conversation!) * Have a look at the **thought experiments** (announced on the day of the event) * 7:15 - First rotation begins - Talk about the first thought experiment, but feel free to veer off topic. * 7:35 - Optional reshuffle: swap groups, move on to the second thought experiment. * 8:00 - Optional reshuffle: swap groups, move on to the third thought experiment. * 8:25pm - Wrap up - hear about upcoming events, feedback/requests for future meetups. * 8:30 Meetup ‘ends’. London Society WALKING TOUR - Chinatown

Have you ever wanted to scout the city and learn more in depth about its history and culture? If so, this may be the right event for you. Welcome to the walking tour where all of this is possible. With this particular tour, I’ll be guiding you around Chinatown where it holds so much history and tradition which makes it one of the most popular tourist attractions in London. Inspired by Sheila Liming's 2023 book, Hanging Out, this event is about "daring to do nothing much, and even more than that, about daring to do it in the company of others." SOMETHING YOU LOVE

A special event to uplift, inspire, and provoke new ideas. **THE BACKSTORY:** At a recent [THOUGHT EXPERIMENTS IN PUBS](https://www.meetup.com/thought-experiments-in-pubs) event, someone on my table said: ***“This is the best book I’ve ever read”*.** The rest of us leaned in a little further and paid closer attention. The person told us about a book they'd read, years ago, and how it had changed their life. This moment stuck in my mind and I found myself pondering the idea of other people as curators, or filters of information. In a time where we have access to unprecedented amounts of information, filtering is valuable. It felt like a privilege to hear about someone's *favourite* book. It was also very uplifting to hear someone talk so positively about something they love. **So, I envisioned** **a meetup where people would have the opportunity to share something they love and to hear what other people love right off the bat.** **What kinds of things do you mean?** **Anything!** * A song that moves you * The time of day when you feel most alive * An idea you came across recently * A memory * A character (etc. etc.). **HOW WE'LL DO IT, logistically:** * Split into small groups, 3-4 people * 20 minutes to share about your respective 'artefacts'. I will play a sound every 5 minutes so that you have a sense of the time and can make sure everyone has space to talk. * Shuffle groups * Another 20 minutes in a new group to share about your original 'artefact' or something new * Shuffle groups * A final 20 minutes for either another round of shares, or free flowing conversation This is a pilot event, so the format is still subject to evolution, but **if you feel like being presented with a unique bouquet of other people’s favourite things, please join us.** **NOTES ON THE GENERAL ATMOSPHERE**: * Relaxed, laid back, friendly. * No pressure to share. * Everyone loves a good listener. **THE HEARTH is a community for people interested in building community** 😊 **Why is it called 'THE HEARTH'?** Hestia is the goddess of the hearth. She is also the goddess of community, hospitality towards strangers, home, and warmth. She is symbolised by the sacred fire burning in every home and city. The pub staff reached out because they'd seen TEiP elsewhere and thought we'd be at at home at Hawkins Forge. From the moment I walked into the pub I could see why. It embodies our values: warm, welcoming, convivial, and a home to deep thinkers. I can't wait for you to join us there. We'll be in the private dining room - ask at the bar if you can't find us. * Organise ourselves into small groups (3-4) * Have a look at the **thought experiments** (announced on the day of the event) * 7:15 - First rotation begins - Talk about the first thought experiment, but feel free to pursue tangents and anecdotes. * 7:35 - Optional reshuffle: swap groups, move on to the second thought experiment. * 8:00 - Optional reshuffle: swap groups, move on to the third thought experiment. * 8:25pm - Wrap up - hear about upcoming events, feedback/requests for future meetups. * 8:30 Meetup ‘ends’. But feel free to carry on conversations. Usually a lot of us stay until late :-) **Notes on the general atmosphere**: * The vibe is to let conversation flow rather than stick strictly to one topic. * While we'd like to talk about 'meaningful things', we also see the value in lighter topics, so don't worry about not being 'deep' enough! * Feel free to suggest ideas for future Thought Experiments in Pubs meetup groups, both in terms of structure and topics to discuss. **Where we'll meet**: This group will be at Hawkins Forge, 5 minutes walk from Clapham Junction. We'll be in the private dining room - ask at the bar if you can't find us. **Who should come**: Everyone! We believe that the more perspectives, the richer the conversation. This group is not about being experts in Philosophy, it is about *doing* philosophy. That is, bringing our various life experiences and lenses on the world to group discussions about the human experience, the nature of reality... etc....
