Atheists Volunteer FOOD DISTRIBUTION! Come help and give out food!

[Atheists United](www.atheistsunited.org), California's largest grassroots atheist nonprofit, is fighting the emergency food crisis with our partners [Sunday Assembly Los Angeles](www.sundayassemblyla.com) by hosting a food distribution in Los Angeles outside our offices. We've partnered with the LA Food Bank and give out over 3,000lbs of food each event. **We need volunteers to help us assemble and organize food packages from 12pm - 5pm every third Friday.** From 3:30pm - 5pm volunteers will help hand food out directly to those in need in the neighborhood. From 5pm - 6pm we'll clean up and celebrate everything we accomplished together. Music and snacks will make it well worth your time. Going through a divorce is most often a very challenging process - financially, emotionally, physically and spiritually. Your way of life may change dramatically as you are faced with legal and relationship conflicts, endless discussions, heated arguments, complicated negotiations, and a myriad of choices and decisions to make. Communication between you and your spouse, often difficult under any circumstances, may become excruciatingly painful as you argue about the custody and care of your children, how much time you'll each have with them, and who is going to pay for what. While you're in the divorcing process it is hard to be vulnerable and attempt to heal and complete the past. You are angry, your spouse is angry and fighting comes all too easy. And yet, just as you must resolve your legal issues, healing and completing is exactly what can and should take place. At this time it is important to have a positive support network - good friends, family and professionals who will listen patiently and give sound advice sparingly. You do not need someone egging you on with unrealistic expectations and hurtful strategies of punishment and revenge. The Marina del Rey Divorce, Separation and Mediation Group is a resource for support as you go through this challenging life transition. The group is facilitated by Dennis A. Cohen an attorney and mediator. Using a combination of education, exercises, group encouragement and sharing, participants receive support in coping with the divorce process, learning about the law, improving communication skills, and getting the perspective of others who are also going, through the challenging process of ending a marriage. Noche de los Muertos @ Hollywood Forever Cemetery-We have our own altar to point

We will have our own Altar for the group as a meetup point. AND you will be able to create art and help decorate it. (read below) This is the biggest, baddest Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) festival in Los Angeles, if not all of California. It's a humorous way of dealing with the reality of death, which is after all a part of life. If all that sounds a little grim, I have been to this event in the past and found it to be one of the biggest, liveliest parties I have ever seen! There will be lots of dancing: Aztec dancing, folkloric dancing, and more. Families set up ofrendas (altars) to welcome back the dead; this year there will be over 100 of them and the best decorated win prizes. You can get your face painted (for a fee) like a calaca (skull), or come with your face already painted if you wish. Come in your best Dia de los Muertos costume; the best costume can win $1500! There are art exhibits and photo exhibits and stunning light exhibits. AND There will be five stages featuring primo entertainment until close to midnight. Although DBSA (Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance) support groups are 94% effective in helping bipolar (manic depressive) or clinically depressed members with treatment adherence, another important benefit is the ability to create a social network with others sharing a condition friends or loved ones may not understand because they simply haven’t “been there.” For such individuals living in isolation, the science of epigenetics has conclusively demonstrated that this can be a life-changing or life-saving experience to an extent surprising to many immunologists and psychologists. In The Social Life of Genes: Shaping Your Molecular Composition, David Dobbs writes [italics mine]: “If you actually measure stress, using our best available instruments, it can’t hold a candle to social isolation. Social isolation is the best-established, most robust social or psychological risk factor for disease out there. Nothing can compete.” “You can’t change your genes. But if we’re even half right about all this, you can change the way your genes behave—which is almost the same thing. By adjusting your environment you can adjust your gene activity… “Despite these well-known effects, Cole said he was amazed when he started finding that social connectivity wrought such powerful effects on gene expression.” What this means is that the same genetic traits that cause a bipolar or depressive condition to manifest itself can be countered by a positive and supportive social support environment to the point the same gene expression is reduced in severity and can even become manageable. This is how, and why these groups WORK. A lack of a social support environment, and the accompanying loneliness, has some predictable outcomes… The Lethality of Loneliness We are social animals.
