Twenty years ago, George Mason University professor Zachary Schrag published the definitive history of the Washington Metro: "The Great Society Subway". With the 50th anniversary of the system coming up at the end of March, TEDC founder Will Rice will make a presentation based on the book. Many elements and conflicts combined to create the Metrorail we now enjoy: a trust in big government projects; the battle over urban highways; the emerging D.C. home rule movement; Black-white relations; and the balance of city and suburban interests. On Tuesday, March 3, 5:30-7-30 pm, there will be a Washington Area Bicyclist Association Meetup taking place in Adams Morgan. There’ll be snacks and drinks for socializing before and after hearing from the guest speakers: WDC Councilmember Doni Crawford and Christina Whitehouse, Bike Lane Uprising founder from Chicago. Christina founded Bike Lane Uprising in Chicago in 2017 to make it easy for anyone to report bike lane obstructions. BLU has since gone national. About Brent Kimbrough: he is an accomplished guitarist, singer, composer and bandleader from Chicago, U.S. He has performed nationally across the U.S. and internationally in Amsterdam, Beijing, Guadalajara, Madrid, Paris, Shanghai, Singapore and more. His band, Brent Kimbrough & Company recently released their fourth studio album, *12th* *Street Serenade* to critical acclaim. Brent’s musical journey began at the age of 11 on Chicago’s southwest side when he was given his first guitar. After swiftly absorbing his fundamentals, Brent began studying classical guitar and later jazz, rock and R&B. Brent’s father, who migrated to Chicago from the cotton fields of Mississippi in 1950 instilled in him a great passion, respect for the blues. Brent has studied with Chicago’s greatest music educators, composers and performers including Larry Gray, John Moulder and David Bloom in addition to New York guitarist Gene Bertoncini and master courses with Pat Martino, Mike Stern, Dave Liebman and more. Brent currently resides and performs in the greater Washington, DC area.

Time to re-activate the NOVA Scuba Dive Club!! Lets get together at C.J. Finz in Manassas to meet old Dive Buddies, make new Dive Buddies, and talking about Scuba Diving and the direction of the club. We will have several exciting upcoming trips and events for this year to talk about including: Bonaire, Belize, the Cayman Islands, Wreck of the SS America, and a couple of Lake Phoenix Trip. Rr you can just come by to chat and have fun. We will shoot for a Deco Stop (happy hour) about every other month at this point and will rotate them through Manassas and Leesburg areas. This moth we will be at C. J. Finz in Old Town Manassas, withing walking distance of the VRE. They have 25 cent steamed spiced shrimp on HH special, so that's good. It looks like we’re finally in for a stretch of warmer weather so join us for a hike at Banshee Reeks Nature Preserve in Loudoun County. Banshee Reeks has an extensive network of hiking trails, nearly 20 miles in total, that wind through a variety of habitats — including open meadows, mixed hardwood forests, wetlands, ponds and along Goose Creek, a designated State Scenic River. We’ll hike about 7-8 miles with some minor elevation change along our route. For carpooling, we’ll meet at our usual spot at the Kiss & Ride lot at East Falls Church Metro. This is not the main parking lot but the smaller parking lot located on Sycamore Street (turn right when walking out of the station). Please arrive by 8:45 for departure at 9:00 sharp. There will be a pit stop at Sheetz on the drive to the trailhead. For those meeting us at the trailhead, we’ll meet at the small gazebo next to the visitor center parking lot between 10:00 and 10:15 (note that the visitor center lot is small and fills quickly so you may need to park in the overflow lot a couple hundred yards up the road). Dress appropriately for the conditions and bring lunch, water and sunscreen. The Adventuring Trip fee is $5 and carpool passengers should pay their driver $7 for transportation.
