The Dickensian Walk, 3.5 miles
* We will start with Coram's fields, where 200 years ago philanthropist Captain Thomas Coram, appalled by he many homeless youths living in the streets, built a “hospital for the maintenance and education of the exposed and deserted young children”. It's often thought that this place might have inspired Dickens to write Oliver Twist. * We will then proceed to Lambs Conduit Street, Grays Inn, Lincoln's Inn fields, Sir John Soane's Museum, , Seven Stars pub, Maughan Library and Dr Johnson's House. * If it's not too busy, we will pop in Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese pub, just to get the feel of the place that was frequented by the likes of Dickens, Dr Johnson, Voltaire, Conan Doyle, Mark Twain and Oscar Wilde. * We will then carry on by the Royal Courts of Justice, this is where the west limit of the City of London is. We will then proceed to see the last Inns of Court – the Middle Temple. This is where Dickens studied the whole time whilst he was writing Bleak House. * Finally, we will see 2 Temple place, commissioned by and built for William Waldorf Astor in the 1890s. They have a free exhibition here called The Weight of Being running from 24th January to 19 April 2026, Tuesday-Sunday. * We will finnish our walk at the Temple tube station (district line). CLERKENWELL....Guided walking tour
CLERKENWELL....Guided walking tour
Yet another great walk of hidden london led by Barrie, this time we visit Clerkenwell and discover a number of hidden gems CLERKENWELL.........THE QUIET VILLAGE Jewellery, some special churches and viva Italia Clerkenwell is one of those places one drives past, travels through but rarely actually visits. Well this walk shows you what you have been missing So close to the city, so close to central London but more than any other part of London it seems to retain its village atmosphere, with a serenity that is in contrast to its location. Unless you are of Italian descent it's doubtful you will know of the area's connection with Italian immigration in the nineteenth century, so much history, so much to learn about. This walk is also so good for romancing couples as you can get to know each other in one of the many restaurants on the best food street in London, buy a ring in the city's jewellery quarter then get married in one of its great churches, and thats not all. Find out about the postal system, see iconic social housing and visit where magicians go to buy their tricks, ands last but not least find out why its actually called Clerkenwell! The walk will be the usual £14 cash on the day and takes a bit over two hours but time will fly on this great tour. 'The Roman Wall - then & now' Guided Walk
'The Roman Wall - then & now' Guided Walk
Come along on Sunday 8th February at 1:30pm for a guided walk along the old Roman Wall! **About the walk** We will be walking the route of the old Roman Wall, starting at Tower Hill Tube and finishing at Blackfriars Tube. The wall was built between 190AD and 225AD and defined the shape of the City of London. As the City expanded in the 18th and 19th centuries a lot of the wall was knocked down, although there is a bit left which we can see. We will be following the wall using a 'Braun & Hogenberg' map which was drawn in 1572, it shows the wall intact and was one of the first maps to be drawn of London. Using the map, we will be able to see not only what the Roman's built, but also how the wall was adapted and what was built around it in the 16th century when the map was drawn. We can then compare this by what exists on and around the wall today, some 1800 years after it was built. The walk will be led by myself. Maps will be provided of the route. We will walk about 2 miles and so it will take about 2 hours. **Cost** Full Members of the group will be free, everyone else the cost is £7 per person (payable by cash, PayPal, credit card or Bank Transfer on the day). **Become a Full Member** To become a Full Member (£14 a year), either: \- Pay cash at an event \- Pay via Bank Transfer \(TSB Bank plc\, Sort code: 77\-66\-65\, Account no: 00030809, Account name: Cultureseekers) \- Pay via credit card on the day or in advance \([https://pay.sumup.com/b2c/QLAX8AUI](https://pay.sumup.com/b2c/QLAX8AUI)) \- Pay via PayPal\, send a payment to [general@cultureseekers.org](mailto:general@cultureseekers.org), using the ‘Friends & Family’ option **Afterwards** After, we will head to 'Starbucks Coffee Shop', 34 New Bridge St (near Blackfriars Tube Station). JON's40th BIRTHDAY HIKE: Nutbourne to Bosham : New hike alert!
JON's40th BIRTHDAY HIKE: Nutbourne to Bosham : New hike alert!
Psssssst, the secret is out! The event of the year! Mama Jon is turning 40! WHAAAAAAT?! I know, I know, I look like I am late 20th at most, what can I say? Some people are just pretty :) So what else can I do to celebrate my birthday? Well, a new wintry hike of course, in the company of my favourite humans, the Jonions. You do not need to know me to join, so come and have fun with us! I first discovered this hike by accident, I was on a trip to a nearby semi-island that had been closed due to a collapsed bridge, well luckily for us, I decided to check out this new place and what a delight it was! So pretty that I have decided to finally put it up for my lovely Jonions to discover... The hike isn't difficult, it is Sunday after all so I have chosen hill free and by the sea. We will walk about 10 miles in and around the Chichester Harbour Estuary surrounded by water, trees and pretty villages in this area of natural outstanding beauty. The village of Bosham is particularly beautiful and we will have quite some views of it from across the estuary, that place is a hidden treasure that has kept its middle ages vibe. Once an important place, history remembers it in the famous Bayeux tapestry. [Bosham - Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bosham) Most of the hike will be along the estuary and should offer some gorgeous view of Britain's most important natural harbour and is part of the famous Solent Way in West Sussex. Evidently afterwards, we are likely to make our way to a restaurant or pub for some tasty food before we head back to good old London. We can celebrate my birthday together or you can just hop back on the train earlier if you are too tired but this hike will not be exhausting, you will burn some calories without too much efforts. INFORMATION: COST: £17 via PayPal for the guide's fee About £28 in cash for the train, we will have a 35% discount with a group saver if we buy our train tickets together and will get an off peak day return meaning that we do not actually pay for the return journey. INCLUDED: Guided trip The photographs that I will have taken on the day and that I will share on the WhatsApp group. A great time with lovely people NOT INCLUDED: Train Anything not mentioned above WHAT TO BRING: Waterproof shoes for the hike, preferably hiking shoes, otherwise good trainers; Weather appropriate clothes, including waterproofs if there is a chance of rain; Water bottle; Packed lunch and snacks. MEETING POINT: London Waterloo at 08:30 am, just by the clock in the main hall of the train station, NOT the tube station. ATTENTION: Our trips will not be cancelled due to weather conditions so please ensure that you do wear and carry appropriate clothing. 😄 POLICIES: 1: This group is designed for the pleasure and enjoyment of all of us, we do not accept any derogatory comments or behaviours towards anyone. Rhino Barn Tour @ The Wilds
Rhino Barn Tour @ The Wilds
**Summary** For this event, we will do the [Rhino Barn Tour](https://www.thewilds.org/rhino-barn-tour) at [The Wilds](https://www.thewilds.org/), a ten-thousand acre conservation center in Muskingum County. It is the largest such center in North America and one of the largest in the entire world. During this tour, we'll visit The Wilds' rhino herd in their state-of-the-art heated barns and learn how The Wilds' animal management team takes care of one of the largest herds of rhinos outside of Africa and Asia. **The date and time of this tour** We will be doing the 1:00 p.m. [Rhino Barn Tour](https://www.thewilds.org/rhino-barn-tour) on Saturday, February 28. The tour is scheduled to last 90 minutes. **What you need to do to attend** Signing up here on Meetup will not get you into The Wilds for the tour. You must go out to The Wilds' [website](https://www.thewilds.org/) and [buy a ticket](https://www.thewilds.org/rhino-barn-tour). Please [purchase your ticket](https://www.thewilds.org/rhino-barn-tour), then sign up here on Meetup so I know how many to expect. **Attendance cap** There are only eight total slots/tickets available for this tour. As I obviously have already bought one of the tickets, that leaves seven spaces for everyone else. If you are interested in this event, I urge you to [buy a ticket](https://www.thewilds.org/rhino-barn-tour) at The Wilds' website as soon as possible. Since their website is obviously public, nothing prevents other people having nothing to do with *GOhio!* from buying their own tickets, thereby potentially taking an available slot away from you. **Additional notes on attendance** I have now run several events at The Wilds. While the location of The Wilds and the pricing of the tickets generally leads to small turnouts, the people who have gone have all enjoyed it and were glad they went. If you've never been to The Wilds and you like zoos or animals at all, you are likely to find any tour at The Wilds to be a rewarding experience. **Tickets and pricing** [Tickets](https://www.thewilds.org/rhino-barn-tour) for this tour are $95, or $76 if you're a Wilds' member. I've posted screen shots, below, to help you be sure you're buying tickets for the correct event. Wilds' memberships pay for themselves if you go to The Wilds at least twice a year, and [Columbus Zoo members](https://www.columbuszoo.org/membership) get a discount on memberships to The Wilds. I will always run at least two events a year at The Wilds. Tickets for all Wilds' tours must be purchased at least 24 hours in advance of the actual tour. **Cancellations and refunds** Per The Wilds' [Cancellation Policy](https://www.thewilds.org/policies): *In order to be eligible for refund and accrue no rescheduling fees, cancellations must be made at least 14 days in advance of reservation. Cancellations made within 14 days of reservation will not receive a refund.* You may [contact The Wilds](https://www.thewilds.org/contact) at (740) 638-5030 between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., or you can email them at information@thewilds.org. **Waiver of liability** After you purchase your ticket, you will likely be asked to fill out a waiver of liability. This is a very short document and should take you no more than two minutes to complete. **Where we'll meet** We will meet at The Wilds, whose actual address is [14000 International Rd, Cumberland, OH 43732](https://www.google.com/maps/place/14000+International+Rd,+Cumberland,+OH+43732/data=!4m2!3m1!1s0x8837dae07a595557:0xa1ceca93325a8bd1?sa=X&ved=1t:242&ictx=111). Please try to be there by 12:30 p.m. For most Wilds' tours, a shuttle bus will take you to the actual spot of the tour. So think of this as though you're going to the airport to catch a flight. It helps to be on time. The Wilds generally asks that people arrive at least thirty minutes because the scheduled start time of their tour. **GPS / Getting to The Wilds** The Wilds is in a very rural area, but I've never had a problem getting there with my GPS (I have Verizon). I've also uploaded a JPG map, below, of Muskingum County. Sometimes, though, it's hard to get a signal when you're at The Wilds and getting ready to leave. So you might want to consider downloading an offline map in Google Maps. Your cell phone should pick up a signal, however, within a few minutes after you leave. The Wilds' Visitor Center does have free Wi-Fi. **Carpooling?** If you want to carpool, I recommend discussing this in the comments, below, to this event. While I don't myself carpool, I will do what I can to help you arrange something if I can. **The weather** Dress for the weather. Just because the barn is heated doesn't mean it will be warm. And wear closed-toed shoes. Wilds' tours typically run no matter what the weather is. **After the tour** Once we're done with the rhinos, we'll head over to the very highly rated [Y-Bridge Brewing Company](https://ybridgebrewing.com/). The brewery is about thirty minutes from The Wilds, and it will be on the way back to Columbus for most, if not all, of us. The brewery's actual address is [1417 Linden Ave Ste D, Zanesville, OH 43701](https://www.google.com/maps/place/1417+Linden+Ave+d,+Zanesville,+OH+43701/data=!4m2!3m1!1s0x8837edd6cc50824f:0xe3a0af1ccb2aefbf?sa=X&ved=1t:242&ictx=111). Y-Bridge Brewing does not serve food; however, they have several [food options](https://ybridgebrewing.com/food-options). I encourage you to check these out ahead of time on their website for yourself. However, here are a few of them: *Within walking distance -- 120 feet away* * [Angry Bull Saloon](https://www.facebook.com/AngryBullSaloonZanesville/) (pizza & subs) * The Corner Pub Sports Bar and Grill (classic bar food) *Delivery options -- [Door Dash](https://www.doordash.com/)* * [4 Star Pizza](https://fourstarpizza.com/), (740) 452-9300 * [Donatos](https://www.donatos.com/), (740) 452-7900 * [Pizza Cottage](https://www.pizza-cottage.com/), (740) 455-6000 * [Dominos](https://www.dominos.com/), (740) 455-3126 * [Papa John's](https://www.papajohns.com/), (740) 450-4100 If you live in the area or can't make The Wilds but still want to meet us at the brewery, that's fine too.

How to Take Control of YOUR Mental Health
How to Take Control of YOUR Mental Health
It’s time to take control of your mental health. How do you get rid of stress, anxiety and uncertainty? These emotions are buried deep in your reactive mind. Find out what the reactive mind is, and in the process find yourself. Here is the secret of being positive and free: Thinking positively is not enough. You also have to get rid of the negative thinking. Your mind is like a garden. You can plant many beautiful flowers in it, but if you don't get rid of the weeds when you plant your flowers, the weeds will soon take over the whole garden. A positive thought is like a flower in your mental garden, and a negative thought is like a weed. You cannot expect to have a positive mindset if you continue to have negative thoughts dwelling and growing there. So, how do you get rid of the negative thoughts? That's what this Meetup is all about. Attend this local meeting and find out! The Meetup event will be led by a consultant who had helped many people live happier in life. Be sure to click on the red "Attend" button below to come to this local event. We look forward to seeing you there. This group is created by the Dianetics & Scientology life improvement center.

Dale Gnidovec, Curator of the Orton Hall Museum of Geology at The Ohio State University, will be presenting a program he has wanted to share with us for a long time: Plate Tectonics. His description of his program: Continents on the move - Nothing in Earth history makes sense without moving continents - it tells us why mountains, volcanoes, minerals, and fossils are where they are. This talk examines the evidence for continental drift, why it was disbelieved, and explains how the more-encompassing theory of plate tectonics was developed and eventually proven. Dale is an energetic, incredibly knowledgeable, and very entertaining speaker and this will be another wonderful program by Dale. Hope to see you there! Food and drinks will be provided at the event.
