Lower Intermediate to Intermediate Pickleball in South Pasadena (FREE)

Lower Intermediate to Intermediate Pickleball in South Pasadena (FREE)

Sat, Sep 19, 4:00 PM
From Los Angeles Hiking Group
4.8

Come join us for weekly friendly games of lower intermediate to intermediate level pickleball! Our goal is to create a group of reliable regulars and newcomers that are roughly the same level and want to play mainly for social fun and exercise, but still challenge themselves to play better and better. (This is our first event to just to get things going, but once the heat subsides we'll set our permanent time and confirm the location) **LEVEL**: Lower intermediate to fully intermediate, approx. 2.8-3.5 level. We are friendly and welcoming, but this is **NOT SUITABLE FOR BEGINNERS OR EVEN ADVANCED BEGINNERS.** If you are advanced intermediate (above 3.5) feel free to join us, but take it easy on the smashing and be encouraging towards the rest of us. **HOW IT WORKS:** We'll play on two courts and ideally we need 10-12 players for the best experience. **EVERYONE WILL GET TO PLAY MOST OF THE TIME** and against most other players. No cliques here! The winning pair on court A will move to court B and the losing pair will stay. The losing pair from court B will queue up for court A. Everyone will switch partners each time. Most people will keep on moving in-between the courts depending on the level of their partner and one should not care too much about the court for a friendly experience. **COMMITMENT:** Because we need exactly 10-12 people it is important that people sign up only if they are certain that they will attend and drop out as early as possible, if necessary. We need eight people to start and finish on both courts, so please be on time and plan to stay for full 2h. If some people want to play another 1/2-1h I will stay to provide the nets. Anyone cancelling during the last 24h before an event more than one time every so often will not be invited back. No guests allowed, unless I know them and I add them as my guests. **WAITLIST**: Regulars with good attendance records will get some priority. **NO CRASHING, PLEASE!** **BRING**: Your paddle, water, sunglasses, and possibly a chair. I will provide the nets and the balls. **COURTS**: We will play on free, less than perfect, courts that are easily available, but we have no reservations. (in the unlikely event that the courts are under lock down we will drive 3min to another S.Pas. location) There is not much fencing, so we play with many balls and let them run off till the end of the game. **ETIQUETTE:** 1) Have fun! 2) No apologizing for bad shots! 3) Tips on how to improve as a player are appreciated, but only in between games. During a game only positive comments for good vibes, please! **PARKING**: Easy, free street parking. Enter from Bank St. **RESTROOMS**: Usually there is a Port-a-Potty on location. Drinking fountains are available. **LIABILITY**: The host is an uncompensated and untrained volunteer. By joining this event each member accepts full responsibility for knowing their limits, for all injuries, health issues, material losses and for assessing all risks. Each member shall release the host from all liability.

Urban Hike - Santa Monica north of Wilshire

Urban Hike - Santa Monica north of Wilshire

Sat, Sep 19, 4:00 PM
From Los Angeles Hiking Group
4.8

This really is a walk more than a hike because there are no stairs and almost no hills. It will cover residential neighborhoods in Santa Monica and a bit of Brentwood. Along the way we will see a mosaic tile house, Frank Gehry's house, a park that at one time was an airstrip and aircraft factory, and lots of fantastic Spanish colonial revival houses. Dogs should be fine everywhere. * **Level**: Intermediate * **Speed:** About 2.5 miles per hour * **Distance**: 6.5 miles * **Elevation gain:** \~100 feet * **Duration:** 3 hours * **Bathrooms:** Public bathrooms at Douglas Park and at the Brentwood Country Market **Parking:** there is ample unrestricted parking on Franklin St. * **Rain:** postpones the hike **Liability**: The organizer is an unpaid and untrained volunteer and is not liable for any loss, damage, or injuries sustained by participants and their guests. By joining this event, each member and their guest accepts full responsibility for knowing their abilities and limitations and releases the host/organizer from any and all injuries, health issues, material losses and getting lost. Each member shall make their guests aware of these policies and release the host from all liability.

We will have our own Altar for the group as a meetup point. AND you will be able to create art and help decorate it. (read below) This is the biggest, baddest Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) festival in Los Angeles, if not all of California. Whatever is written can't compare with a well made vid. **[Click here](https://player.vimeo.com/video/816694907)** to watch what it's like [https://player.vimeo.com/video/816694907](https://player.vimeo.com/video/816694907) Come celebrate the Mexican holiday on which the souls of the departed are said to return and join in celebration with family members. It's a humorous way of dealing with the reality of death, which is after all a part of life. If all that sounds a little grim, I have been to this event in the past and found it to be one of the biggest, liveliest parties I have ever seen! Photos from past years [https://www.ladayofthedead.com/gallery/nggallery/gallery](https://www.ladayofthedead.com/gallery/nggallery/gallery) Event details such as specific acts and parking get updated to this posted in the month before. and parking. For the moment you can find 2023's info at [https://www.ladayofthedead.com/event-info/](https://www.ladayofthedead.com/event-info/) This is a Meetup? YES . . . . we (the group owners) will get an alter spot. We will decorate it a bit. And we will set it up with chairs and a table with an art activity. Watercolors . . . watercolor paper . . . brushes . . . and you will get to make your own offering for the booth. We will post the location of our altar. This will be our Meetup point. You will get there. And you can head out with whoever is there. OR . .. sit down and start with some art and when other folks get there . .. head out with them. And remember, this takes place in a cemetery and mausoleum. Some of our members have family members buried or interred there, so a certain level of decorum is also appropriate, along with the fun and joy. For instance . . . I personally have relatives located here. Looking forward to seeing you there! Interested in being one of the hosts. OR interested in being in charge of the design and creation of the alter and decorations . . . send me a message. Will add you and you can then be part of making this event happen.
